Hints open beta soon as well!
The combat, while much improved, will still provide an obstacle to new players merely by dint of being different from World of Warcraft. |

This is good news. I love how you can wait until dark to sneak up on a group or listen in on them. I wonder when the beta actually starts. I wish there was more about the open beta instead of one sentence.
This game just seems more and more promising to me. I had almost reached a point where I though I was a retired MMORPGer, but now with the new releases on the horizon...I feel as if I might be able to return to the genre with even more enthusiasm then before (well, in the post pub 16 UO era...LOL!!!)
isn't 800 quests kinda a low number?
from mmodb
everquest2 1356 (allakhazam has 4486)
wow 4969 (al 6212)
vanguard 3437
lotr 1662 (all 1475)

That really depends on how the quest are - small tasks or big quests. In my opinion 800 is small if its just: "Collect 4 x from y in z". But if the stories and tasks are more elaborate, then I dont think 800 is a low amount.
The quests in age of conan may be longer and so give more experience meaning that you don't need as many quests like in WoW where each quest at level 60 will give a fraction of your overall XP. Maybe in Conan the quests will give you a useful amount of XP actually making it feel less of a grind.
I could care less if they actually like the game. They obviously know nothing!!!
"or the unbearable Arnie movie"
Make a difference!
I don't care if they only have 500 quests as long as they don't ask me to kill 10 bores at level 1, 10 dire bores and level 10, 10 undead bores at level 20 and so on....
Make a difference!
Yeah. I agree. Less quests is acceptable if each is more well thought out and offers some originality and diversity.
"Kill ten rats" while a staple in the MMO world really is kind of boring. Especially when as has been noted they just move you ten feet to the left and behind a bolder to kill a new rat with a different sub name. FFXI was the worst offender of this in my personal experience. They didn't even reliable the mobs. You just had to know that while you could safely kill rabbits "here" the ones behind the rock were tougher and for later.
I like the sound of some of the quests from this article and I think that my preorder was the right move.

It also might depend on what they mean when they say a quest. I know that sites like I listed sometimes count each step as a quest. That mgith be why the differing number for EQ2. EQ2 tends to have many quests with numberous sub steps.
But none the less 800 seems pretty low. Just hope that number would not include the steps in a multipart quest.

If the 800 number includes sub quests or steps etc thats extremly low. I for one who love to quest could do 1/10th of those in no time. Oh well, i ll try open beta if one is happening to see if i ll get this game.
The headline of this thread reminds me of the ads for EQ2. Heehee!
The number of quests is FAR less important than the quality. Do I need to remind you about Vanguard?
Very true but it s still a little low imo who knows maybe they re really long cool story quests which will help.
VG had some good quests at the lower levels. It is just anything past 25 they just fell back on kill x, find x type quests with no rhyme or reason
I remeber one I did that went like. "My horse is afraid of giant spiders, can you go thin the population" Kill 20 giant spiders.
Hmm did they steal that one from wow :P

Amen to that brother! I have been playing MMOs forever it seems like, and if I get a quest to kill one more rat, skeleton, boar, snake or spider I may well lose whats left of my rotted out mind!
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Give a fish a man and he will eat for a month!
i see this number going up alot its for far away to know what is gonna be what yet
wow and EQ2 have been out what...3 years +?
vanguard 1 year +
Lotr close to 1 year? with about 12 books worth of updates?
and you are comparing it to AOC which is STILL in closed beta?.......uhhhh what?

From what I have read, the quests wont be fast.
My other argument, wow's quests are crap. Only about 5% is actually fun. I guarentee you about 20% of wow's quests is "Speak with this douche at this location" and another 40% is "kill X boars" or "collect xx amount of bore droppings."
Trust me, I played wow since launch, and just quit 1 week ago. Just found a buyer for my account. I am going to spend my money on a certain barbarian game
Don't forget that many of the 1-20 quests will have voice actors and cut-scene cinematics. Thats very unusual for an MMO.
Hopefully they will some good cut-scenes for important high level quests.
I agree, these are 800 quests at launch, im sure they will add more in as the game ages which will bring the number closer to other games.
Plus perhaps they arent using quests as a linear method of gaining exp so they dont need as many as WoW. Perhaps quests in AOC are actually quests, that you can chose to do or not chose to do, not the most viable way of leveling.
From what I saw they are deep involving quests. Some humorous, some sad, some violent, and some chain quests, you can even have the opportunity to RP some, there are lots of different types set in a progressive character developement way. The approach is similar to a bioware type of quest with open ended options.
Joel !! we are calling you out! tell marketing for some more in-depth clarification and insights on quests!!
I'm worried about the server stability of this game but if thats good and there aren't any horrible bugs, it'll be great of course.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if that number is on par with the amount of quests released by other games at launch. WoW has over the past 3 years added numerous quest to it's long list so that is a moot comparison. AoC can and probably will do the same as time goes on. It's content, and content can always be added through patches.
Also, for a game that's billed for PVP I think the quest number is fine. I think this is just another example of people looking for things in games that don't necessarily promise them.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
