How big of a future do you think there is for WoW?

ExavusExavus Member Posts: 200

I'm currently playing WoW, I have a select few friends who also play but i'm worried my friends will leave the game for others and i'll want to follow them.. If AOC or WAR is gonna be really good then i'm worried that playing WoW now and the gains i'm making in the community are a wasted effort.. Anyone in a similar situation?

Well, I know it's not a good idea to jump on the next great looking MMO even when your still playing one that's really good. My biggest issue is i'm tired of the PVP community on WoW and it's elitism.

Current MMO: WoW/GW2

As long as you stick with PvP in WoW, I think it'll not be that much of a wasted effort.

You only have like 2 months to wait for AoC. You should be able to have fun with WoW's arena, BGs and Open PvP with your friends.

After trying AoC, if you don't like it, then you can still try a more PvP-oriented game to suit your preference. I suggest:
    - Guild Wars, if you like arcade (BG-style) PvP
    - Eve Online, if you prefer hardcore PvP
while waiting for the next generation of (sandbox, thus PvP capable) MMOs.

You'll just have to convince your friends to play your next game, and not the opposite ^^

    ---
    Waiting for: GW2
    *thumbs up*: GW, Eve(, WoW)
    *thumbs down*: MO, GA, FE

Have fun (as much as you can get) in WoW and create a Myspace or Facebook group titled "Exavus's friends who want to play together". So, when you decide which game you want to switch to you post the name of the server(s) that everybody should make their characters on. This way your pals that do decide to come over later know where you are.

As for PvP elitism.. If you do like PvP but hate the elitist bit (that's me as well) then I suggest following WAR closely. Guild-centered PvP games do tend to be elitist while WAR has as its stated aim the creation of something called "Realm Pride"(tm). Meaning that it fosters the feeling that everybody of the same faction is a comrade in arms... (what WoW kinda tried, failed miserably and in the end intentionally destroyed) Example: even if you're not "1337 pwnz00r" you're more then welcome in any world PvP situation since there are no player number limits like in instanced BGs.

AoC might be cool as well but I'd suggest making sure that at least a few of your pals follow you when and if you switch so you can create a solid guild core with you right at the center. Nothing worse than being unwanted/unneeded in a game that requires guild play for its endgame.

Frankly I never liked WOW and the trend it created among other game developer studios that want to make the next WOW which in fact tend to be cookie cutter MMOs with no real potential or difference (SWG tried and is still trying to emulate WOW but failed miserably..) Most games today are trying to emulate WOW to gain customers and they will fail miserably... game studios need to read this word SANDBOX people want diversity in their game, something that sets them apart from everyone else, engaging content, original content, never before and innovative game mechanics (but keeping the sandbox). Thorw in some player run radio stations in-game and voice chat like EVE and you got a game that sets it aside from everything else.

    NO UNAPPEALING PVP

NO CHANGING GAME MECHANICS EVERY 6 MONTHS

NO CHANGING THE GAME WITHOUT DISCUSSING IT WITH THE CUSTOMERS

I've played WOW off and on since release. First time i played for about a year until i got bored out of my mind.. I then returned a couple times for a 3 month stint again leaving out of sheer boredom. WOW is not mentally challenging, Its not difficult in any way or fashion and who wants to wait in line to PVP like qued PVP is in WOW. Personally speaking i think WOW is for first time MMO players. Most veteran PVPers want more in a game in fact most veteran MMO players want more in a game.

WOW is a lazy persons game per say. I mean  thats OK to but it's a niche market targeted at noob MMO players. It took what was already available and kinda made it EASY MODE. For me the most appealing thing with WOW when i started playing it was the AH system .. Now just about every game has one so its not a standout any more.

I think it will be around but I'm figuring at its 5 year mark numbers will start to severely drop off. The game developer that puts a thinking persons MMO out that is mentally challenging and requires some forethought to play will have the next game. WOW is just a clone of games that came before it but made easier. WOW is not the best at PVE or PVP in fact its second or third in both those categories. I personally don't understand its popularity and never have. I see WAR stealing tons that like the DAOC PVP system. Its still the only PVP system out there done right.

IF WAR docent produce its going to be a long time for any major titles to capture a large market of online MMORPG players. Lately new games are like new movie releases. Generally of poor thought and crappy story lines or reruns lol.

You can't get away from WoW-bashing even in the LFGame forums

Anyways I think WoW will have a good future just because their team is always active. Things change every so months, new arena gear, new pvp gear, new instances, new skills, new talents etc. etc. All just in a simple patch. They keep things interesting and people captivated.

Sure eventually it will die just like all the empires, but it will be slow and there will always be those who never stop playing.

I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion ... but there is a lot of stupid crap in this post.

First, There is currently NOTHING else on the market (aside from maybe GW) that can touch the high end player skill requirements of WoW's arena. Hence, there will be elitists. The thing is, elitism is part of ANY game at high levels. You can play happily at ~1500 rating and not worry about the elitist community. Start climbing toward 2000 and things get tougher. You have to gear up, spec right, and know your class and it's role in PvP in a way that most L70s do not. That's right - just because you're L70 doesn't mean you know jack about PvP! Hard to swallow, but it's true. High end PvP is there for those who choose to participate. BGs are open to everyone. Low rating arena is open to everyone. Calling high end arenas elitist is like calling the NHL elitist for having high end skill and equipment requirements to play ...

Second, some tard called WoW a "niche" market game because it appeals to the masses? Like WoW or hate WoW, you have to admit that  comment was one of the dumbest things uttered on the Internet this week.

Third, I'm a veteran of several MMOs and I always come back to WoW. Why? Because Blizzard was the first, and in some ways the only, mmorpG creator to try to keep the G in the genre. Certain other games subscribe to the philosophy that if something isn't endless and tedious, it's not worth doing ... Blizzard, despite their many downfalls, has always strived to keep WoW fun ... Love it or hate it, it's a game first and an MMORPG as a close second, whereas other games (FFXI is coming to mind) are more about timesinks and grinds over actual "gaming"

    ------
Played - UO, FFXI, WAR, WoW, EVE
    Currently - Bored.

Haha yea _Jord_ I hear ya. I've dabbled from 1500 up to 2000 and it's definately a world of difference. My favorite is my friends 2v2 team named "We hit 70 yesterday" who actually created the team the day after they hit 70. They didn't complain about losing, they didn't quit, they just took everything in stride and slowly got their gear.

I think WoW will continue to grow subscribers until Blizzard releases their next MMO in 201x(2012???)

Then it will slowly decline to a few million by 2013.

So, I think WoW has a good 4 years of growth until it declines. WoW will be around for a long time.
