Non-Clan/Guild Crafting?

Kevyne-ShandrisKevyne-Shandris Member UncommonPosts: 2,077

Looked up the threads here on crafting MMORPGs, and checked some of the suggestions. But from what I've seen they're all seem to be clan/guild based.

Is there a game with crafting that DOESN'T require joining up with a clan/guild to get anywhere?

I just don't have the need for the drama associated with clans/guilds, and don't consider it relaxing from RL to meet it online.

Last MMORPG I've played was VoyageCentury (could at least plant/gather/craft independently), but when the Store basically became the crafting source, I left. Like a crafting system that's not as weighty as the MUDs, but not just a grind like VC (with all the ports overrun with ALT sellers, too!).

Happy medium somewhere?

I've never played an MMO where you needed to be in a guild to get anywhere with crafting.  That includes SWG, WoW, EQ2 and LoTRO.

Dark Age of Camelot crafters are still needed on the classic servers and you never need to join a guild.

AoC is the only game I know that you actually have to be in a guild in order to do High End Crafting.  Other than that its usually just considered beneficial to be in a guild as a crafter so you don't have to outsource to complete strangers for parts & recipes that can't simply be bought off npc vendors.

Or do you mean you want a game where you can be the manufactorer / gatherer of every single little item needed in order to craft so your like a Grand Master Do it All?   Not even skill based games let you do that.  Everyone has limits.

Isn't the point that in games where the guild takes a central role in organizing players, we have no real need to treat other players as anything other than "complete strangers?"

To me, guilds are antithetical to what manufacturing and trade should be about.  Because the objectives of the guild are to keep better products at the lowest prices for the guild's exclusive use (often not even responding to market pricing at all) while markets naturally strive to bring better products at lower prices to the widest numbers possible.

The reason I don't want to join a guild, is due to the drama they tend to have. Games to me is having fun and getting away from the day-to-day world -- not reintroduce it into a game as "fun".

On the crafting and merchant level, I would prefer to trade with anyone, not just trade first with guild members (often at cheaper prices, which hurts the pocket). When having to join a guild to fashion anything, let alone you're not free trade with anyone (i.e., can't sell to thieves, for example), makes crafting and selling pretty dull.

I'm not sure whch games you've been looking at, but you can be a crafter in most games without having to be clanned/guilded.

For example, in LOTRO you can be an Woodworker, which allows you to harvest wood, make things out of it and sell them on the auction house to anyone who wants to buy them.

In WoW you can be a weaponsmith + miner, which allows you to harvest metal, make things out of it and sell them on the auction hosue to anyone who wants to buy them.

Some games have more energetic player-driven economies than others, for example crafted items in LOTRO are some of the best items in-game whereas crafted items in WoW are either second-rate (and don't generally sell well) or based on recipes that can only be achieved while raiding (meaning you have to be in a high-end raiding guild to get them).

Went over to their forum, and upon seeing how they offed some who even gave thoughtful criticism, I'll decline playing the LOTR game (despite being a Tolkien fan for decades). That type of behavior translates into ingame play, and I'm getting too old dealing with 15 year-olds acting like jerks.

Have a suggestion of a game that has good crafting and a more mature player community?

I found the LOTRO community to be quite welcoming, if a little snobbish and overly-RP oriented, but meh.. I guess it's not for everyone. Hmm, other games. PotBS is supposed to have an in-depth player-driven economy but I haven't enough experience of it to recommend it in good conscience. Definately avoid TR as the crafting just doesn't exist. Other than that I can't offer much more insight.

Maybe someone who has experience of different games than I have can chime in with a suggestion or two.
