MMORPG computer spec?

MeltdownMeltdown Member UncommonPosts: 1,183

I have heard many times about how having tons of RAM is needed for online gaming, some people say Gfx card is where you should sink money, etc. etc. I have a decent system, but I feel like it plays MMORPGs sub-par to what it should.

I just want to know if anyone has any cold hard facts (if any) about MMORPGs and the areas they stress.

Obviously a 2D game won't stress gfx as much as a 3D game, but shouldn't there be a common bottleneck somewhere for these games? Do the Killer NICs actually help? What about physics cards?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have an XPS machine from Dell. 4 gigs of ram and to me the ram makes all the difference. I can now play EQ2 wide open, even on PVP server, could never do that b4 with a compareable machine and only 2 gigs of ram. Hope this helps at least as a starting point to others telling me how wrong I am lol

From what I've read it looks like the L3 Cache is quite the improvement as well.

From every test and review I've read about the killer nic cards they appear to be a royal waste of money. No review I read could even find a significant improvement if any.

What are your system specs now?

It depends on the game.  Most drawback in a game is from Graphical Rendering.  If this is the case, then you want a better video card setup because Video Cards process that stuff better.  Processor speed doesn't actually play a huge factor in games.  I can't really think of an exclusively memory intensive game.

Ive used the same gfx since getting my comp for 2 years now and the only improvement i saw in my games was when i got more ram.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms
