"Im considering taking my $15 sub fee this month, cashing it in for pennies, and scattering them all over downtown Austin, so SOE can go do a collection for my months rent.  They will receive a 'one use' payment.  I would do it again next month, but it is a collection and not repeatable."

This is the best post I've read on the official forums for a loooooong time.

  • Don't like scavenger hunting for the elusive rare drop in a collection?  Don't like pounding Foozle for an hour?

Then you might as well quit now, because that is what passes for "content" moving forward.

    Great quote!

Funny and critical at the same time - I love it!

HA HA HA HA That was awesome!  I went back to the game for awhile, collections hit, I walked right back out the door.

They thought it would be fun to put on a circus for the subscribers,"Oh but guess what, you're the clown".

Don't know if the collections are as bad as I have been told (haven't really tried myself) It seems nice side quest, but that "SOE penny collection" joke is hilarious ;)

There are three basic collection methods:

Find objects in the world (often guarded by mobs) and click on them for five seconds and add them to your collection.

Kill lots of mobs (200 rancors, 175 enraged rancors, 150 mutant rancors...etc ad nasuem) for a badge or title, basically.  Oh forgot to mention that some of the quests are even more mindless in that you're killing such fearsome critters as kreetles and vrelts...

Collect loot drops for nifty things, like the ability to put your toon in the meditation posture by collecting holocrons.

The catch of course with the loot drops is that the SOE devs cannot stop themselves from making just ONE of the ten or so loot drop items fantastically rare, so you wind up with bazaars and vendors filled with "Rare crystal 1/10, rare crystal 2/10, etc excluding of course the ONE rare crystal (say it's 4/10) that you need to complete the set, so that what you're really collecting is the ONE rare piece, not the other 9, of which you have proably 4 or 5 dupes of.

Which is why the poster on the forum should create the penny drop so that there are, out of the 1499 pennies needed for the collection, a sub system of dimes in which 1 each of them is hidden in particularly diffcult places around Austin or is a rare loot drop off a traffic cop.  You need on average to kill around 1000 traffic cops to the the one penny you need to complete dime collection 102 of 149 in your ongoing collections quest effort.

In SWG, the devs now focus on collections to gate content, Go here...go there. Kill 100 of this, then go kill 75 of that. Kill this (many levels beneath your level) repeatedly until ultra rare piece of a collection is found to complete said collection. Many items, abilties and badges are now funneled through mindless grindfest collections instead of being granted through mulitple immersive and challenging quest lines (non heroic), enjoyable mini-quests, interesting random drops, new regularly added schematics for crafters, etc.

In EQ2, the collections provide pleasant side content that is not required to enjoy the game. EQ2 still develops and delivers multiple quest lines of all types, be it 'regular', heritage, status, epic, heroic, language & lore, etc.

Miagisan, how does that work?  I don't have any actually played entertainer toons on my one account able to participate in the last vet trial so have no clue as to what is involved.

Collections is NOT "required gameplay", I personally do collections as part of what I do in normal gameplay. I recently completed a tusken kill collection and never went out of my way to kill tuskens, there were plenty to kill over time in the defense of Mos Espa heroic encounter in my case. Sure there are people who did that quest in a couple days after release because that is how they are wired.

If you want the collection for increased housing storage you sure can go out and grind the different mobs to get it  or you could simply but them from people who like to grind it's up to you. Content is what you make of it, last night our group did a Star destroyer heroic, crafted 3 jetpacks in the DWB and then PvP'ed for a little more than an hour. There is plenty of content in the game and more coming faster and faster all the time now.

So it's just like EQ2. Bleh. I grant that the achievements are not the only way to live through the game, but as far as what they are, they are definitely cop outs.
