Should I try this game

Here's my thing. I'm really sick to death of goblins, orcs, dwarves and the medieval look and lore of the whole western fantasy genre. To the point where I will walk out of a movie or return a DVD to the shop because of it. It sucks, it's dull as dishwater, adn that's my ongoing, honest opinion.

However, people have been saying some pretty good things about LOTRO and I could be tempted have a go at it. Demos and quick trials aren't my thing: I do not dedicate time to a game. I'm definately a casual gamer these days.

Is LOTRO going to be something that I should invest my time in? Existing players: Your feedback on the game would be appreciated.

It is the game based on Tolkien's work, and Tolkien's work was a grandfather of fnatasy genre so there is no escaping elves etc. That being said it is a well done game with decent graphics and a concept a lot of people find enjoyable.

The story line is great (based on the lore Tolkien developed in detail) and majority of quests are fun.

It is also casual friendly (you can easily solo if you prefer it to grouping), has instances and raid content, plus a sideshow of PvP.

However, as the other threads here show, it is NOT a PvP game nor does it try to parade as one.

    Hope that helps.

Hmm if you really don't want generic fantasy stuff, you COULD give Tabula Rasa a try.  I hear it's gotten a lot better since launch and it's a fairly casual game - but I haven't played it since the beta.  Give it a look:

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

Well I definately think you should atleast try it. But I believe MMORPG fans should try all MMO's on offer, especially before they judge them. Most of them have something great and unique to offer, and they all have their up's and downs. It's all on personal opinion. Im not a big fan of Lotr but it really does have some cool features. It's a very clean/bug-free games and it looks great graphics wise. I can definately see why it appeals to so many people. Hope this helps and if you try out the game, I hope you enjoy it.  Post in the same thread if you try it out and let us know what you think. :)

I'd say absolutly yes, the game is great (good lore, great graphics). It was not my game, but it is worth a try.

From your first paragraph, I don't think you will enjoy LoTRo.  There are lots of goblins, orcs, dwarves, and the medieval look and lore in the game.  So... that seems to be at odds with what you've said you like and dislike.

There is a free trial you can download to try out the game... however, that goes against what you've said about trials not being your thing.  So, I'm not sure where that leaves you.

I like LoTRo and find it to be the best MMO available right now; however, that is me.  I like all the things that you've said you dislike in your first paragraph, so obviously your mileage may vary.

Considering your quote in your sidebar... I'm thinking that maybe Pirates of the Burning Sea might be a good fit for you.  Possibly Anarchy Online might work as well; because even though it's Sci-Fi it doesn't have the heavy emphasis on space like SWG and EvE.   Well, whatever your choice; good luck.

Lotro is the kinda game that you say to yourself , dang wth am i playing this one second , yet as soon as you log out you want to play more. My tactic is to make friends i am successor
in a kinship with decent size so i do well. When you have lots of poeple to group with makes things much esier. I would give it a shot.

Hard to answer this question. I played since beta but just cancelled my account. I really enjoyed it for a few months. However soon like many I started to get bored. I really logged in just to run around since game looks great and I love Tolkien. For a few month I kept my subscription with hope the frequent updates would relite the fire I had for the game at first. Sadly that never happened. I do think if you can afford the game go for it. Many still love the game. I have seen a obvious player decline in my guild and on my server in general since the game went live. I recommend giving it a try and you may love it but the lack of sandbox feel eventually made the game feel flat to me.

The only things that are special about LoTRO are the graphics and the Lore.  Otherwise, it's pretty much a generic, cookie cutter MMO like all the others.

If the Lore makes you sick to the stomach, I can't imagine why you'd want to play it.

I downloaded the free trial, and within 6 days of my free trial I bought the game. I came from Playing WoW for 2 and a half years or so (with 3 70s and a 62) and Everquest before WoW. I really enjoy LoTRO, To me it's kinda a mix as far as quests and gameplay go betwee, EQ, EQ2, and WoW. It's not to easy and it's not to hard. WoW was crazy easy and so was EQ2. And of course anyone that has played EQ knows the grind on that game, yet it was still fun and is probably the best game that I have ever played. It just no longer has a community and my wife won't let me raid so, or i would probably still be playing it.

But anyways, It's a good game. I know it has alot of bad reviews but they are only true to the person that wrote them. I would give more information but my 7month old daughter won't let me type anymore.

    peace

You answered your question on the second sentence! Stay AWAY from LOTRO. You will be awwed and oohhhed for the first few levels then you will realize that why did i pay money for this pile. You can't be evil ( sorry that monster crap is what it is CRAP ) and you dont have much choices on class because they are all weak and have no characteristics that would make it worth while for a MMO.

    "Should I try this game"

IMO your best of finding some kinda trial, buddy key, whatever. I bought the game as soon as it came out and was very disapointed. I just couldn't play for more than an hour without becoming bored. ALOT of people feel the same about this game too, bored that is. Though, some people like it. But yeah, try your best to play the game before buying it otherwise you may end up wasting your money like i have.

Hmm.....well, don't really know what to say about this guy..but his first sentence may be correct.  If you are sick of elves and orcs...well then playing in a world based on the fantasy series that is basically the granddaddy of all modern fantasy may not be for you.  There are a few sci-fi based MMO's out there that you may want to try...EvE, Tabula Rasa, or even City of Heroes if you just want a break from the norm.

That being said, LoTRO is a great game in my opinion.  It has a lot of stuff to do outside of your standard level to the end as fast as possible so you can complain about lack of end game content that a lot of games have ::WoW:::cough:::.

I personally like the classes.  I didnt at first, and to tell you the truth I was less than thrilled at what I saw in beta, but that probably had more to do with MMO burnout than anything.  If you are sick of MMO's then you should probably take abreak before coming back :)

I stuck with it from beta on and have grown to really love the game.  I like all of the classes.  I found that once I figured out the strategies for the class, then I appreciated it a lot more.  For example, Guardian seemed really boring to me, but once I got abilities that chained off of the use of other abilities, I liked it a lot more because it had some depth.  I wasn't just mashing buttons (1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, dead) anymore.

Loremaster used a lot more strategy as the different pets are good for different situations.  Oh and as far as pvp...if you are very pvp-oriented you may not like this game.  This game isn't about PvP.  PvP is more of a mini-game than a full-time monster-playing career (although I think there are several people who do only that).  PvP may build in time, but it's more of an afterthought to the PVE game.

But I'm probably getting off of the topic.  If you hate fantasy, don't play a fantasy game.  You may want to take a break for a while and then come back and give it a shot, once you arent as burnt out..or you can try the demo and see if you like it.  Maybe it will change your opinion.  If not, then you may find your home in EvE, Jumpgate Evolution, City of Heroes..or any of the other sci-fi MMO's that will be coming out in the next year or so.  You have options:)

Good luck with whatever you choose!

    To red-letter guy:

Geeshh... it's a game.   Take a deep breath and relax.  Hopefully whatever made you go off the deep end will be resolved soon.  Probably not a good idea to post on public forums when having an episode like that.

Good advertising for your favorite MMO though... I'm sure that kind of attitude will attract a lot of new players.

To the one who started this thread. As many have said, try it out before you buy it. Its a enjoy or not enjoy situation with the game. Free trials are always good to see if you like it or not so at least try it out before buying. To the guy who freaked out with the red lettering, its a game man, relax.

  • frumbertfrumbert Member Posts: 190

hehe: I didn't see the red letter thing until I turned the stylesheets back ON for this site. Yes, I do mean what I say in my avatar. I have a special script in my browser that makes this site READABLE when I visit by changing the stylesheet so that it does not suck.

I'm seeing a lot fo opinion here and that's is exactly what I hoped for. I'll download the demo, though since I'ce a casual gamer a demo really isn't a good idea since I'll play it, what, twice in the time frame. Once a week is about the total energy level I can dedicate to an online game (or offline: games on my pc sit there for months at a time some times). If LOTRO had a "pay what you play" subscription model then I'd probably just go for it right off the bat. But it's subscription model like the rest. Yawn.

Ok, so it's not for everyone. It's pretty, its got a world that is at least explorable. I found this first time round in Anarchy Online (which was in Beta when I played it). Lots of vast and varied content, a consistent well thought out world and well accepted lore. But not actually deep, expecting me to know at least some of concept behind the world of lort to begin with - races, struggles, beleifs, and so on. But it's fantasy, western fantasy, so that's ok becuase it never really changes or explores new boundaries. But it sounds also like it's haunted by the usual mmorpg crowd too.

I'll download it. I'll give it a very limited go in the highly restrictive time frame. If I join up, you'll see me here in the forums ranting and raving.

Thanks to all who posted in this topic: I did read everything and I consider everything to be helpful in my decision (even the shouty guy half way up!).
