hey guys...i really want your opinion on this...no sarcastic remarks please...lol ..
im currently and almost done my computer programming courses and stuff...i have a pretty good background in art as well and can model texture draw design etc..i dunno...how long do you think it'l take for 1 dude to solo the mmo of his dreams....meaning making creating artistic/programming/world design etc....all by himself...while getting by on a decent job...or should i keep dreaming...
could you be a little bit more specific...like what should be my primary concerns if i wanna make this work...i mean aside from the money needed...but i also wont be starting from the ground up...il probably use an existing engine to make things ALOT easier....someone mentioned earlier using the source engine....i know of 1 company actually using it for an mmofps. Max amount of people working on this would be 2....but it would be like 2nd job for us....as soon we finish our 1st one that supplies us with shelter and nutrients...
dunno if this would help ...sry cause i dont really wanna be that specific about the details just yet....but.....the bare min would be on par with WoW graphic wise...but the artistic style of the game will not be cartoonish and not cell shaded.
are we looking at like....say something under 3 years....or am i way too naive and way off?? (again this is a seriouse question, try to resist the urge to flame....please ) as i would like for this to become reality before 2011....that way we at least get 1 year of gametime/gameplay if assuming the whole doomsday thing in 2012 is true.

Curious how much big time games such as Vanguard, Everquest 2, World of WarCraft, SWG, ect. cost to build. As far as amount of $ on a development team, amount of money for a gaming engine, computers to work on, years it takes to build, ect.
I know this will vary per game but figured I'd list a few if any of you guys knew the prices.
The cost of a good mmo may go way down if Mutliuniverse is a winner.

If you take something like coffee mud/IRC, some fancy sprite tools, and plagurize the :beep: out of anything else you find. you could get it in 6 months to a year.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I would not count on it. Just look at the link posted earlier about costs of making a MMO. It is not just about the programming and art. It is about the SIZE of the content.
If it takes 4 hours to make a quest, 2 hours to make an item, how long do you think it takes to make a mob/char model and how long to make a zone?
A typical work YEAR has like 2000 working hours. So ONE man can make ~1000 items in a year. Modern big MMO has 10s of thousands of items.
All one man can do, if he is any good, is may be make a DEMO of an MMO with one small zone, couple of mobs and a few items to show off his skills. One man is not going to finish a MMO in 100 years. In fact, you can do a roughly calculation. WOW costs like $75M. Even if each member of the team costs $100k per year (which i think they cost less), it takes 750 man-year. So ONE man has to spend 750 year assuming he is expert of all the different type of jobs.

i think 70 milliom coz when numbers of players increases you have to open another server and you have to pay again...also in the events you will also need money so my guess is 70-75 million

You will never finish it.
Try something smaller.

Thank you very much for one of the still working links.
The original link either does not work, or was moved. It takes some digging around to find where the new original link moved.
Good to see other sites copied the story, and saved it.
Buisness 2.0 Magazine it is. Not "Wired" magazine. I get the two mixed up. They both have intresting stories.

One Billion Dollars!
