Isn't Silius the guy that was head of crafting in Beta? lol That guy was downright stupid. All he did for crafting was make it a huge grindfest. Hell even the items you grinded on couldn't be used in the market. Part of the fun of crafting, and what other games haven't learned how to master either, is leveling your skill with the craft whilemaking stuff you can actually use and sell.
Silius. lol
All he had to do was make it take a lot longer to craft each item, while also upping the xp received from each item. Then add in some kind of wear and tear on items and degradation of items so they would eventually break. maybe they could have two users before they were utterly destroyed. That would be enough.
Secondly, don't allow each character to level in all three spheres. Duh. Take what was learned in SWG. One character per server. One profession per character (give or take). Brilliant. Use what we have learned from previous games dude. This is what helps makes certain the supply of items is kept more even. Everyone shouldn't be a master crafter. What the hell kind of sense does it make to have a master warrior, someone who's trained their whole lives to be good with weapons, also somehow find the time to be one of the best smiths in the land? Uh....wtf?
Nah he didn't want to hear any of that nonsense, and neither did the weird people who actually like crafting grinds in games ala SWG grind fest. Making a bazillion of an item and selling them to a vendor is boring. Making a bazillion of an item that's totally useless in the game is even worse. Not leaving the crafting room at all cause your quest giver, crafting materials (given to you by the quest giver LAWL), and crafting table are all in the same room...wow just stupid and not even close to realistic. Does not make sense.
Crafting should be fairly realistic. That's part of what makes it fun.
Silius has a horrible sense of what makes a great MMORPG. ... He is good at making robotic gameplay though. His way of making sure the market wasn't flooded with crafted items was to make crafting boring to the point of tears, which only masochists would enjoy. And since there are not many masochists in the world he figured this is a good bottleneck to introduce into the game. LAWL Make a game better by purposefully making the content less fun. Brilliant.
Good luck, Vanguard. =(

Out of all the fantasy based MMOs out today, Vanguard would be the one that I would most likely return to if I wanted to play that kind of game. No other world compares to the vastness and openness of VG, but with the original developers gone and all of the empty promises, I just can't see myself returning. What is the point? To go back and simply get depressed over the vast amounts of lost potential? VG could have been the greatest fantasy MMO ever created.

Just for the record I disagree strongly with just about every comment you made.
I think crafting in this game is briliant
I love that you can level all 3 spheres
I think making a bazillion items and dumping them on the market is stupid and most games crafting is a huge money sync. It's refreshing to have a game where crafting is actually a full game and stands independently.
Finally crafting isn't robotic but it's the only system I have ever played that actually requires that you think and have to work with where skill and knowledge will actually make you craft better then another person.
So I think what we can determine is that you don't like the crafting system but there are many people that do like it...

Read the post again. Crafting should not be about making a bazillion of anything. It should take longer to make something, and in so you can then sell it when you're done without flooding the market.
The crafting system sucks in that game. There are other games where crafting is a stand alone system, which are FAR better than vanguard's ever was. SWG is one example (although still not perfect). Hell even UOs is better, and that game is ancient.
There will always be a select few people who like something even if it's a system where you repeatedly stab yourself in the arm with a knife. Yes there are actually people who stab themselves for fun. Since there are some people who like it, even though they are a very small minority, does that make it something good? No it doesn't. Many many people in the beta said the crafting grind sucked, but nothing was ever done, hence those people who didn't like it left. Of course you can't hear them not liking it now, because they don't play any longer.
Crafting in Vanguard is a grind, and was designed that way on purpose. Silius even said he preferred it that way. No I can't reference you to a thread because it's part of the beta boards.

If you see "without flooding the market" as point I can't really understand you saying about mats for workorders "given to you by the quest giver LAWL".
If the mats from the workorders was taken away and you only could use own mats.
You would have two choices:
Make a workorder and have an item that can only be used to finish the workorder with and gain a measly sum of coin and XP.
Make an item that could be sold on the market (In the end really resulting in a flooded market and you will get less and less for items crafted. So it would go in most cases as vendor trash) and XP
Now when you get the mats from the workorder you will have three choices:
Make a workorder without loosing mats have a smaller chance of getting a higher grade item.
Make a workorder with own mats and have a better chance of getting a higher grade item.
(With higher grade you will get more XP and more coin and items for the workorder. Which is true in both examples but here it is more apperant for the choice of using you own materials)
Make an item with your own mats and sell it on the market. A market that is not as flooded by other leveling crafters.
------------
Should it be less grind if it took longer to create an item.
Why?
I'm assuming here:
You do not mean that it would be a castbar with, what, 30 mins countdown or even 5 minutes and then the item is done.
You do not mean that the cooldown on the individual steps would be longer and so prolonging the time making an item still have to do the same amount of items to gain XP to level. That would not lessen the grind really, it would make it the grinding even more.
You do not mean that the cooldown on the individual steps would be longer and so prolonging the time making an item, and that it would need a few items to gain enough XP to level by. That would either make it really easy to level a crafter or it would not even there lessen the grind.
You do not mean that there would be more micromanaging in the crafting session and so making it longer. Would not either make it a lesser grind.
How would it really lessen the grind leveling a crafter just because it is taking longer to make an item?
