I'm looking for a MMORPG/ORPG that allows for meaningful PVP. In other words, a game that distributes so-called harsh (compared to games like WOW) penalties to those who die to other players. (e.g. loss of items, gold, experience)
Do any of you have any ideas? Thanks.

I'd have to say EVE or Pirates of the Burning Sea are what you're looking for. EVE is a bit more harsh in the death because not only can your ship be blown up, but your POD carrying your pilot can also be destroyed meaning you'd have to revert back to the last time you cloned. If you forgot to clone after getting a new skill you lose that skill (I think, I didn't get to far into EVE that someone actually POD killed me.) Pirates of the Burning Sea is fairly easy to level, if you get a group and go open sea hunting you can easily hit max level in a month (This of course depends on how much you play.) But you can lose your ship in PVP, and items. You can also surrender if you don't want to lose your ship, which means you can offer your cargo, but the person has the chance to decline it and destroy you anyway, he just won't get your loot. Both are great games for PVP.
Shadowbane is doing a "reboot" on March 25th. Its a fresh start with everyone on equal footing.
They have taken down all the gameworlds right now and have started deleting everything and re-formatting everything in prep for the new servers that will be released on that date. 6 days early, they are doing more than just deleting stuff!
The graphics may be dated and the true RPG movement system can be annoying, but there is NO other game like it. Its the best PVP game on the market.
The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
MMORPG Finder for ALL Games based on PvP alone (Thus sequential and cumulative methods will give the same results) gives this list of potential MMORPGs to look into.
Sequential Method
This method ranks all MMORPGs based on the first desired feature, chosing the best and then ranking the remaining upon the second criteria, then the third, etc.
Cumulative Method
This method ranks all MMORPGs based on the cumulative total of all desired features. Each feature you selected is given equal weight.
Hope this helps

Eve online is what your looking for also someone mentioned Shadowbane , another good call as well. Lineage 2 what I am playing now has what you seek.
Waiting on Guild Wars 2
Just wondering how Lineage 2 is towards newbies, I played the trial once and just found a key I got with my Guild Wars lying about and thinking if I should use it or not...
