*WARNING* If you hate this game and only want to bash it, hit the back button now. *WARNING*

Alright, now that I *hopefully* have the attention of people who like this game (not many people it seems) I want to ask a couple of questions. I will put them in list format to make it easier for people to just copy and paste and answer (please).

1) Why is it said it is impossible to solo? No one seems to back up this statement with evidence. I guess it could be hard to solo. I could see a Dark Knight having to face creatures a few levels lower than it to be able to level efficiently, but that has to be better than shouting "LFG" for a few hours.

2) It seems to be that Summoners would be able to solo. This is the class I am most interested in because I have always favored summons. I loved the old games (Final Fantasy IV the most, with VI in second) in which summons were used. I loved Rydia in IV. So, I know about the lack of summons, but I don't care. Leviathan is my favorite and he is there so ok. Anyway, is this possible?

3) What is "blink-tanking?" Simple question, might not be a simple answer though. By the way, I know it is using a skill to tank but how is it done.

4) Is there PvP? From what I gather, there isn't. This wouldn't be a put down for me, but it would be nice to be able to kill the occasional annoying person.

5) Which server is the most populated?

Thanks for your time taken to answer this, and curse you if you are posting a reply meant to flame.

I love this game and i shall help u out. 1st off it isn't impossible to solo with certain jobs, but most jobs can't after a higher level. They can, but the ones they can solo won't give them any exp (plus its kinda hard to solo or do anything as Smn without every avatar). Just take advantage of every avatar possible and make sure your MP doesn't drop to 0. Blink Tanking is wat normally Ninjas do. They cast uchi-soemthing, that gives them a certain amount of blinks. Then whenever a monster hits them, they don't take any dmg. AND YES THERE IS PvP. It's called ballista, but i wouldn't recomend doing it at least till level 30. And u can't even think about it till your rank 3. Plus, Mage's dont really rock at ballista. The Servers i think most populated r Shiva, Odin, Ifrit, and Fenrir, but don't count on me being 100%. This game rocks, I just don't get who would come up here and say SWG is good. (Makes me wonder if he even has a brain)

Thanks a lot for the answers. I am probably going to get the game and I will either be a Red Mage/White Mage or Summoner/White Mage.

Convert's lure is just too strong.

Well the above person answered it all, but I would like to say that the server "Fairy" seems to have alot of people at all times. That's the server I'm on, and it took me a while to get that server.

3500-4500 people at peak times. And rarely less than 2500 people. (at least when I'm on)

:::waits for ramadin to start bashing the game::::

    1) Why is it said it is impossible to solo? No one seems to back up this statement with evidence. I guess it could be hard to solo. I have said many times.... when in a final fantasy game is their an extended period you have 1 person. There are none. You always used to fight in groups of 3, earlyer ones it was 2, but you know in FF games you always were grouped, its just this time you get 6 players instead of 3 and each one is player controlled.

You can solo, at least at the lower lvls, its just very slow XP kills... u know 12-70 xp... infact lvls 1-10 when u are supposed to be soloing, i was actually XP chaining with a MNK which had a WHM sub so not as much downtime. U can't do that easily at higher lvls.
There are clases which can solo for more decent exp. Sum/BLM and BSTS.. mb a DRK BST if u can somehow get the hate away from the DRK.. etc etc.

But it is not a solo based game, in groups u get 200xp kills.. then the first chain is 240xp.. and it goes up from their.

You don't shout LFG for hours. You put ur flag up.. and shout occasionally. In that time you go out and solo the easyer monsters in the zone for minimal XP but Items you can sell in the AH or you do quests or tradeskill.

    2) It seems to be that Summoners would be able to solo. This is the class I am most interested in because I have always favored summons. See above hehe.. yeah they can solo if they are good

    3) What is "blink-tanking?" Simple question, might not be a simple answer though. By the way, I know it is using a skill to tank but how is it done.

I haven't heard this term used ingame. Mb its something to do with changing voke every 15 seconds with another tank...

    4) Is there PvP? From what I gather, there isn't. This wouldn't be a put down for me, but it would be nice to be able to kill the occasional annoying person.

Not yet.. just the ballista thing... I haven't done it yet, but you basically go around and find these balls, kill people, and find a goal to score in. It looks pretty fun, i saw some ppl do it. Who knows what the next expansion will bring in terms of PVP tho.

Thanks for the answers guys. I am an avid Final Fantasy player. I love the entire series and have played each and every game multiple times (Yes, even Final Fantasy Legends and Adventure for the Gameboy). I see now. Put your flag up and solo while you wait. Makes sense. I just hear people complaining about how they put their flags up for days and not get a group and end up getting no EXP. I guess they didn't think to solo while they wait. I am thinking about Red Mage/White Mage for my class, Hume, so I don't think I should have much trouble finding groups. Also, Ballista sounds fun. It seems obvious they would add a mini-game instead of straight out PvP, like all Final Fantasies.

All in all, it sounds like a great time. Can't wait to test it out.

P.S - Quick question, is there a free month of play when you buy it? Not important, but just asking.

    1) It is not impossible to solo, but most soloing after level 10 can rear little reward. Usually you only solo when you are not looking to make any xp. Certain classes can solo better than others, and many times it is good to level 2 sub-jobs, one for grouping and one for soloing.

    2) Dont know much about summoners so trust others' answers.

    3) Hmmm, there are two kinds of "blink" tanking that I have encountered. Blink is a spell that boosts evasion, so blink tanking is when an agile class (thf or nin) or a caster hybrid with he spell tank using their evasion instead of their defense. The other form I have seen is referred to when a person provokes away from the main tank for a moment for one reason or another but the main tank takes back hate quickly once they do what they need to do. (an example is when a warrior provokes off a ninja so they can re-cast copy image and continue to tank.)

    4) There is PvP but it is only in the in game sport of Ballista. You find stones you have to throw into the goal but in order for the goal to open you have to gain breah points by killing members of the opposing team. The lore of the game world centers around an alliance of the four main cities that join forces to turn back the legions of the Shadowlord, that is the main reason that there is no open PvP amongst adventurers. I would hope that they could implement duels at some point but from what I have heard Ballista is alot of fun.

    5) No clue, I recall there being a server that has so many people that you can only access it via world pass but I cant think of the name atm. Remember you are given a random server so there is little chance of there being a dominant server in terms of population.

the olny thing that need to be clearer is  what blink tanking is

it is mostly when a nin has a nin spell that lets him get hit a few times with out takein dmg but this is hard from what i hear so that is it really

I am only going to talk about about soloing. I have a 24 whm that I have solo'd to there. I have not used any help. Yes, I have lived with 25 or less exp per kill to do it. Soloing is how I keep from going broke and having to farm things that won't give me crystals.

Ppl love to talk about the fact that you have to go to certain places to level. That is why I solo. I am not playing this game to fight in 4 areas after I hit 15. I want to explore the world and fight where it is not crowded. In my linkshell though, I do have ppl who talk about waiting for hours to get a group. It is just like any other game I have played. Sometimes it happens quickly getting a group and sometimes takes forever. It is better if you have friends or Linkshell (sort of like guild) to get party members from.

Ppl want the 200+ exp so much I have met many ppl who know nothing about other areas or other parts of the game except for Valkurm Dunes (up to 20), Qufim (up to 25), Kazham (up to 35), and then Crawlers Nest (to 75). I keep having ppl tell me this is what I have to do. I refuse to accept this. I might have to spend a year to hit 75. I will live with that. This is an MMO though and there should be more places to go and party for exp. I can level every 8 hour session if I don't stop. So I know I can do it. Maybe I will have to kill easy things that will only give me 12 exp. That will mean at some point take a few days for a level but at least I won't feel like I am forced to certain places because that is what ppl have decided is easiest way to level.

I ask the ppl in my linkshell and friends questions about things in the month I have played and they know nothing. I have found 4 ppl in my linkshell that knows more than the only places they say to level. I have the first two quests done for my mog house safe expansion. There was a 40+ whm that did not even know there was such a thing.

Just remember that I keep hearing linkshell members and friends having to farm or be a teleport service to make money because getting that 200+ exp means not enough loot to keep up with armor and spells. That is another thing to think about. Leveling quickly is nice but if you can't afford it then you will have to do the boring farming (or if high enough, teleporting). That is no fun to me. I like to kill things that give me crystals because I sell those more quickly than just about anything else.

If your thinking about being a mage, and not really looking towards the melee classes at all, then you might want to be a tarutaru ::::31:: Just a suggestion, I'm not really experience with FFXI yet so don't take my suggestion too serious.

Yes, there is a free month of play when you buy it, you pay at the very start of the next month though.::::20::

If your looking to join a specific world/server, then I suggest you browse some of the FFXI fansite forums, some forums have sections just for worldpasses, you might get lucky and find the one you need.

I am going to be a Hume Red Mage/White Mage, no tarutaru for me, heh. I like the pimp hat looks on the Hume and I heard they are more or less the better for a Red Mage. Tarutaru is good Black Mage or Summoner.

Hehe so you've gotten some pretty good answers to your questions. However I think that blink tanking wasn't really explained properly.  Blink tanking is the only tanking that  NIN/WAR can do (not done by THFs).  To do it they cast the Ninjitsu Utsusemi:Ichi (and at higher lvls Utsusemi:Ni)... this puts up 3 shadows (4 for Ni) which absorb attacks by mobs.  If done properly the NIN can tank and never get hit.  While this practice is fun (though unorthodox) it is uber expensive as powders are used for every cast.

... And yes it would be nice to have the option kill the random annoying people that you will inevitably meet. but alas there is none :(

    -Cleo

    50 RDM - 40 NIN .....

    ------
    Cleo

    56 RDM - 45 NIN - 27 WHM - 26 WAR - 22 BLM - 18 THF - 14 SAM - 10 MNK - 8 RNG - 7 DRG - 5 DRK - 4 BST ....

Robbgobb, ever hear of BCNM? and since your a WHm you won't have any troublr finding ptys until you hit lvl 40ish. But before you do that you should get your bard flag at lvl 30(And you have to be level 30 for all ADV. jobs) so that people will want you beyond level 40 becuase with a rdm/whm and brd/whm you wont need a whm/blm in a pty post 40.

reading the topic and all the information in it, i almost forgot my original question i wanted to ask. :)

i read a few things on www.mmorpg.com - player reviews. it was so totally mixed in spectrum that i have no idea what i should gather about this game, and i wish to find multiple reviews on gaming sites.

first - i saw that the first month is indeed free. But arent you required to buy the game in order to use that first free month? that doesnt seem to be very beneficial...the game is over 40 US dollars, and what if i dont like it? i cant return the game to the store i bought it from. What i want to know is...is there a way to TOTALLY try the game for free for the first month, like there is with SWG or EVE Online or AC2? if so, i'd like to give it a try as i'm a big fan of Final Fantasy, especially good ol' FF3(US version) on the SNES, and FFVII for the PS1.

second, can you give me a few websites that are not affiliated with Square Enix that review the game and its online play? Even if i can try the game out completely free of charge for a month or so, i still wish to do research before i clutter up my windows registry. :)

third, i read in one of those mmorpg.com player reviews, that you cant choose the server you play on - is this still true, or was that change integrated and now you can choose?

    thanks again!!

    1. You HAVE to buy the game first. Non-refundable once opened.

    2. Don't know.

    3. You can't choose the server you play on, if you want to get on a certain server, you need someone on that server to buy a "worldpass" for you, or you can just search some fansite forums for worldpasses, a worldpass can be used 5 times I believe. Or you can just create and delete your character over and over until you get that certain server, though some people will keep getting the same server. The server you get depends on your connection.

Yeah, WaterBBQ, I heard of BCNM. I died in 2 the night before I posted my first post on this subject. I am not worried about finding parties other than there can be a wait. What bothers me is that there is set locations to go. I keep trying to find ppl to play with in other locations than the ones I mentioned. I have solo'd for whole days in an area right next to zone trying to get a party. Never a single person looking in the region in my level range.

That is the part of the game I hate the worse so far is that ppl want to level and forget there might be other places. I have already convinced a couple of linkshell members to do some soloing to keep up cash flow and have fun. I now have a couple of ppl similar level that I might be able to get to make a 2 or 3 person party to go other places than the normal places ppl level.

Thanks for asking me about BCNMs
