Well to start off, I've played many, MANY free mmorpgs (other than Guild Wars) and now I'm looking for a new one, to help YOU decide what game to play, I'll write down which I've played, how long they kept me interested, amount of grind, and anything interesting about it. To help me, judging by the MMORPGs I've played, I need you to tell me which I should try next (Preferably free).
Now for the list:
Maplestory: This game really grew on me, the community was great once I got past 30, considering the noobs seem to lose interest around that level. Great gameplay, instead of standing there and taking a beating, you can teleport/jump around your enemies. Kept me interested for about a year, then gave up thanks to grind The grind to 21 is alot easier thanks to henesys PQ now, and at 21 there's kerning pq until 31, but 31-35 is murder. Basically, it's do the same party quest over and over if you want to level at all in this game. I still recommend this game to anybody wanting a change of gameplay, but... a change is really all it's good for.
Runescape: I played this game for 2 years starting when I was 8 years old, probably the only reason it kept me interested was because I had not played anything better before. People may say "Hay you dun just grind, there's mining and cooking and stuffs!" WRONG. It's still grind, only difference is instead of clicking enemies, I'm clicking an oven/rock/whatever. One word (If you'd call it a word) to sum this game up is "Ugh"
Guild Wars: SALVATION AT LAST! After quitting Runescape, I saw this in EB games and figured I'd give it a try. I'm so glad I did. I ended up buying all 3 campaigns + the expansion, beat them all on atleast 2 characters, and then quit because all I really had left to do was PvP and farm money for new armor. I recommend this game to EVERYBODY. Probably the best of the games I've played.
Flyff: I played this alongside Guild Wars, and for about 2 weeks after I quit Guild Wars. In this game you have two choices concerning grind: 1.Play on a regular server with GRIND. 2. Play on the P.K. server which is x1.5 exp and drop rate (I swear it's actually more than x1.5) but risk getting pked at any time. The flying concept is pretty awesome, and most new MMORPGs seem to have tossed it in too.
Gunbound: Not really an MMORPG, sorta like an online version of Worms, apart from the fact that worms has much more weapons/maps/overall fun. IF you're thinking of playing this because it looks like worms, just buy Worms World Party. Please. Save yourself the agony.
GunZ: Once again, not really an MMORPG, arena-ish 3rd person shooter MMO. Awesome. It's sorta like Counter Strike. What it lacks in overall gameplay, it makes up for with awesome moves (Wall running, wall climbing, dodge rolls, dashing) and unlike CS, you can also purchase swords. Ah yes. Swords. The center of K-style which generally overpowers everyone other than people who actually bother taking the time to master D-Style. Not too much grind, it's fun to grind in GunZ anyway so who cares? I usually play it whenever I'm put off of my other games.
Rappelz: Played for a short while, after I got to the mainland, I really had no idea where I was going and the lag in cities was, and still is, terrible. Has a great pet system, pretty good combat system/skill animations, great graphics for a free MMORPG, and other than the assholes who PK you because accidently KSed them the community is generally rather nice.
Silkroad: Sorta wondering if I should go back and play this again, loved the berserker system (Kill enough enemies until the bar is full and BANG you're one mega psycho-looking demon thing with supreme running speed and attack power, the effect even lasts for quite awhile. Not sure if it was a grindfest, might have been... If somebody could update me on the grind in the game now that would be pretty helpful. Graphics aren't bad. Pretty good actually.
Hellgate London: Sick of cookie cutter MMORPGs? Well this game won't really be much different (Heh sorry to get your hopes up). Google this game and you'll come up with more bad than good, about a 4:1 bad to good ratio. I'd wear out my keyboard writing all the ups and downs, so if you're interested, google it. One thing though, if you do play, first time around go Marksman or Engineer, different gameplay to any other MMORPG. However most of the other classes, I can sum up easily: Cabalist=Necromancer/Pagan/Dark sorcerer Guardian= Your typical "Hay I'm a big meatshield! Like my sword?" character. Blademaster: A half assed attempt at an assassin job, high damage per second, crumbles like a papercup. Summoner= Well, I guess this one is sorta different, but if you've played summoners in any other game, or an MM in Guild Wars, it's the same as that.
*Scratches head to jog memory*
Corum Online: Ew. Lacks anything that pulls you in, just another MMORPG, doesn't even have good graphics, and not that garphics matter, it just makes a game with crappy gameplay even worse.
Space Cowboy online: Kickass. (Summed it up there didn't I?)
Cabal Online: One of the better MMORPGs I've played, if you're not in a country that can play it then just use HotSpot shield and play the OGPlanet version. Aswell as normal grind for lvls, you have skill grinding, to level up your skills, so far while I've been playing, the increase in my damage dealt is barely noticeable, but I'll try some more jobs and get back to you on that.
Dream of Mirror Online: Loved the idea of being able to switch to any job at any time, fantastic community, people sell you cash items for ingame money (and they sell it for suprisingly cheap too) Pet system is sorta meh. You buy the pets from the cash shop/item mall but they can be bought from players for 15k-210k depending on the pet. Gameplay is rather good, grind is hard when you hit around lvl 21, and it's just plain PAINFUL at lvl 28. Yet again, one of the better MMORPGs I have played.
Dungeon Runners: Was humorous at first, and the grind wasn't noticeable. I quit for awhile to play another game and then came back. How I wish I didn't. My eyes were raped by the in-your-face-an-eight-of-the-entire-screen-size advertisements, to try and FORCE people to buy membership to rid themselves of these malignant tumours stuck to the inside of their game screen. If they removed the ads, I MIGHT play again.
Tales of Pirates: Played this for awhile to be with some of my RL friends who had picked it up after finally having rid themselves of that disease, Runescape. Not too bad, just another MMORPG with epic grind, a not too bad community, with a ship feature tossed in. The ship feature is hardly worth mentioning.
Okay, now those are all I could think of off the top of my head, now I ask you, what should I play next? Been playing Counter Strike:Source, but no MMOFPS can keep you entertained by itself. Especially in New Zealand, land of the terrible weather.
No WoW please, but any other suggestions of preferably F2Pgames -although P2P isn't too bad if the game is REALLY worth it- would be much appreciated

I suggest you start play WWII online its a great game and so different in gameplay from the other mmorpgs.
Try Anarchy online (Its from the people making Age of Conan) Its a rather old game, but they did TONS of graphic upgrades and are planning to launch a DX 10 engine. Its a great sci-fi mmorpg, best community I've ever seen. Has a radio station with DJs that give away ingame money, items and RL stuff. Best GMs ever!!! Its the best game I've ever played. I stopped playing it because I had played it for a very very long time and slowly lost interest.
Its F2P without the expansions. With 2 of the expansions (shadowlands and N wars) its like 5$ a month I think. With all 3 its 15$ a month, but if you buy in periods of time like 3months-1 year its much cheaper.
The rest is correct.
Yes they HAVE done graphic updates, and they will do doing more. You probably just havn;t played long enough to know. They re-did nearly all the ground textures not too long ago.
I was wrong on the dx 10, I ment 9.
Downloading it now. Can you do much without expansions or are they sorta necessary?
Yes, you can do quite a lot of as a free account. The expansions help, but you can really see if you like the game or not on a free account.
The free account lasts forever and you can get lvl 1 to 200 (max is 220 /w expansion) and you play all but 2 professions.
Awesome, 2 minutes to go
is that free? i also want to try it
It may help if you mentiopn what it is you like in MMOs. PvP? PVE?
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
Check out Mythos, and if you are into sandbox games, check out Wurm Online.
Blessings,
MMO migrant.
Actually, I have played more than long enough ( since beta in fact ). I remember seeing the new textured grass for the first time outside of Borealis when it was first being patched in. I thought you were talking about the big upgrade coming, which is why I said they hadn't yet. So I apologize, as I misunderstood you.
Max level is 320+ with all the expansions, as you have 200 with regular AO/Notum Wars, another 20 with SL, 30 AI levels with AI, and 70+ research levels with Lost Eden.
As for an MMOFPS, WarRock is nice if you don't mind the hackers.
Anarchy online is a great F2P game, just as Archlord, Mabinogi, Holic Online, ... and many other. You should check the mmorpg list on this site!
