It all depends on what you want to do in WoW and the graphics quality and level you can/want to live with.

You can run WoW a $700 desktop PC (make sure it has a dedicated gfx card a 7600 geforce of equivelant radeon is more than enough.. and 2 gig ram).

For max enjoyment I run WoW in 1600x1200 with max gfx settings on my 8800GTS, 4gig ram, duel core 5200 althon. Must of spent $1500 building that. frame rates between 45-60fps

And I play WoW on my $600 laptop that has crappy intel onboard gfx, duel core intel and 1gig, I play on 800x600 and medium settings... dedicated gfx card I could pump up resolution and gfx details. frame rates between 15-30.

Not exactly steep hardware requirements here, but don't get too comfy with the settings, either. Or else you'll have a hard time in crowded PVP battles or raids. You'd get good performance from 2 GB RAM and a 7600 GT level graphics card. But by no means do you have to have a dual core processor for WoW, a P4 3.0 ghz also does the job nicely.

Just make sure that your computer has a decent gaming graphic card. Not one integrated to motherboard, not any Intel card, and not the cheapest card ATI or NVidia has to offer. Many previous generation graphic cards (or graphic cards released a few generations ago) are really good for WoW if they are just cards made for gaming. But those graphic cards wich are just meant for desktop use cause often problems.

You can do with any processor, and 1 gb of RAM, if you just get Windows XP (or Linux) to your computer. If you want to purchase Vista then you'll need to be more conserned about processor power and the amount of RAM you have. Not really because WoW would need it, but because Vista needs it to run properly.

Edit: Best option to buy a cheap computer for WoW would probably be to look for some used computer originally built for gaming. Especially since nowadays nearly all new computers are sold with Vista.

That 386 Compaq is fine, but I prefer...

    TRS80II

    The Radio Shack TRS80 II!

The only problem is finding WoW on 8 1/2" floppy disk.

Seriously,, though, as stated- if you buy a new computer today, just make sure it has the best graphics card you can afford.

It depends on what resolution you want to play at as well.  24" monitors are becoming the norm these days and 28" monitors are becoming more affordable too.  To play the game reliably  at huge resolutions in busy areas such as cities or in Alterac Valley where there can easily be over 40 people on one screen, framerates will dip and it will become choppy.

And remember that even though you're getting 60+ fps in one area that's just an average framerate and it can drop dramatically depending on number of players/pets/mobs with all their particle effect armors and weapons and spellcasting.

All that said if you've just got a bog-standard 19" monitor or similar than you could probably hook up a gameboy to it and it would still run :p

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

That is called overkill, and that would run vanguard. One of the biggest appeals to WoW is that it runs on insanely old ass systems that can't even run word anymore.
