I would normally recommend EQ2, in fact I would say content wise it's one of the best all around western MMO's available.
BUT...
The winds are shifting...I think with the type of game an MMO is, and how horribly bad the end game is becoming in EQ2, I would recommend finding another title.
EQ2 can be a fun game if you aren't looking for a new MMO home. It becomes a pretty bad game once you start really getting into it. There is depth and lot's of gameplay, but the support from the developers is very poor. The game is anything but future-proofed. I think for an MMO to really be great you need a company that is interested in making it great. SOE simply has moved on and is not going to update EQ2 to run well on modern hardware.
The problem boils down to SOE has many games. And their top priority isn't EQ2. So the game is left to die, and players slowly figure out, hey the game is obandoned. That is what happened to EQ1. Occasionally they throw you a bone, but basically it becomes clear, EQ2 has been left to die.
the monthly game updates show otherwise
in LU 35, last May
eq2.wikia.com/wiki/LU35
SOE added a new starting city, a new race, a new starting area, and over 100 new quests under 20
in LU 39, last October
eq2.wikia.com/wiki/LU39
SOE added Shard of Fear
in forthcoming LU 44 due soon

SOE is adding Shard of Hate
EQ2 is not abandoned by any means

Hope you guys know that this post comes from a guy who shows his lvl 14 character so how is he bad mouthing end game???
lol. I'd suggest you ignore John. He doesn't know what he's talking about.
John is basing his post on the whole SOE issue of corruption..
I totally agree...it makes SOE look stupid, and I do not feel any better for them as a company...
Now, if he would have been truthful about the game also, then I would say.."Go for it..."
John is Dead WRONG
The game is incredible, with so much to do, and end game is looking up with so much more added for adventurers, raiders and crafters...
Also, even though the engine is screwed for new hardware (Specifically the 8800 series)...my brand new 3870 and 2900 ATI cards run this game like a champ...and it looks way better in certains areas...even better than Vanguard (which looks kinda ugly to me...lol)
so...yes...SOE as a company...sucks...EQ2 as an MMO shines compared to all others out right now!
Okay okay children lets not turn this into a flame post, the reason why i picked EQ2 is because i am waiting for a new MMO ((psst Warhammer Online)) and i was just asking if it is worth my temporary time on it.
I really want an honest answer from you folks, not a flaming contest
I like the game, and its worth a try.
Easy to get into and some great folks around

100 times yes to return. EQ2 IMHO Is the best non pvp Fanstasy game on the market right now
If you want a fresh start, roll on Najena and come play with wife and I n' friends
The end game is at this moment in time is poor i know i've been 80 since the first few days of november last year and theres nothing to do when you hit that level other raid which i dont like.
But content wise EQ2 simply doesnt have any close compitition to it,the shed loads of stuff (just not much aimed at the higher levels) but its great if you're a serial alt maker like my goodself, its till the best MMO out there but in my mind at least the ball has been dropped with ROK and i really hope they get thier heads back together for the next expansion.
EQ2 has changed a lot, so you should check it out again. The questing is very solo based in EoF and RoK, but this introduces you to a lot of lore and great storyline content. Whoever says EQ2 is dying clearly has no clue what is going on. They are constantly doing updates and adding free content. The next live event coming up (maybe next week) is the opening of the shard of hate. Evil players will work to widen the shard of hate and spread hate throughout Norrath and good players will attempt to clense it.
If you like questing and lore, there is literally no grinding involved as leveling feels very natural. The sheer number of classes ensures that there is a class for everyone, so check it out again.
And I firmly disagree with the post above stating that the end game is poor. There is a lot for players to do once they hit 80, as it is probable that they haven't completed all of the quests that they have picked up. You even have 140 AA points, so you still get xp for completing the quests, so it doesn't feel pointless to do them. If you like grouping, there are some great instances to do to get armor sets. Lets not forget your epic quest line. You can't even start it until level 80, which involves an intricate storyline (specifically for the class) full of solo and heroic steps for non raiders. If you are in a raid guild, you can upgrade your epic weapon by killing certain epic targets. Outside of raiding for epics, there are all kinds of raid targets, ranging from easy to hard and there are awesome epic item sets.
