this was my NGE experience. As much as I loved this game, I was lucky enough for this very situation to unfold.
A couple friends gathered a LAN together with a few goals in mind. To game and have some fun, while analyzing specific points which make a game fun at its most basic element. At this time we had the idea to program a multiplayer game just to get some experience under our belt. I was the only person with a SWG account and at the time I hadn't any subscriptions to other MMO's. To give you a timeframe, it was before Commando's could use HW and just when the last expansion hit and a bit before Kashyyyk had experience for their quests.
My friend logged into his uber WoW character he had been working on forever. I logged onto my 90 spy (which was post NGE not any of my original characters which I deleted - explanation coming soon) and my other friends where playing other non MMO MP games. Anyway. As most people can imagine, my objective was to show everyone what is probably not the best way to pull off an MMO.
To explain how I got my spy to 90 post-NGE, my friends where astonished to know that the amount of bugs and the inability to fix or control any game-breaking flaws. By purchasing the Obi-wan expansion (which was totally unfinished) this could guarantee level 90 in under 1 week. This is not by exploiting (which I remember there was a lot of) but in my case, I could take some beetle quest over and over in order to get rediculous amounts of XP. I was awake literally 2 days strait doing that quest (as were tons of others) until I got my spy to level 90.
This in conjunction with the fact that, as a spy I could go invisible, break aggro and solo NK-Necrosis for loot that was going for 15mil. credits or so at the time just made my friends stand there wide-eyed. They said, w..t...f?? We looked over at my friends WoW game and I just contemplated how much of a disaster the NGE was (not to mention bugs and unfinished content) This was the very day I canceled my account, deleted SWG, never to look back.
I still read updates and check on this forums as well as a few others form time to time. Pre-cu SWG was a fantastic game. One I remember having a lot of fun on. I am glad to see people with passion striving for change still.

Sounds like peer pressure, don't be a victim.
Account has been stolen, why would someone want to steal my account?
The last time I subscribed to the game was the original NGE medic update. I was convinced at that time the devs had no idea whatsoever what makes a game fun. The flashes and the red crosses flying everywhere (looked like flying koalas with their mouths agape) just added to the worst character movement and overall lack of quality. I just could not take it anymore, no matter how much I liked my guild and Star Wars. I could no longer be taken advantage of.
It would be great if they could just admit the spastic movement, the sped up game clock, the flashes and affects, and the condition of the game are what's wrong. Instead they just keep adding layers, even though the foundation itself is crumbling. Maybe they will fix it, but probably not. If they ever do, I will probably play again, but until then, I will just keep watching...

The CU, when it nerfed the living poodoo out of all the medic profs, chef, and brought in the utter evil of overt levels because the special ed devs couldn't deal with anything but the most simple MMO concepts nearly broke the camel's back. It did cause me to cancel preorders of RotW.
A guildie pleaded with me to enable at least one toon to go to Kashyyyk, so I relented on one account.
But then the NGE came along, with order 66 for CH, and that was it. All accounts cancelled, refund requested for the bait and switch expansion.
I haven't paid a dime to SOE or Lucas for any of their products since then.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

The Straw? The CU did it for me,,it sucked the life out of the game for me.
The last straw for me is when they took out BF. Totally killed entertainer for me.

The day of the NGE.
I tried my best to ignore everyone's misgivings about the change but on that day I logged in and wasn't able to move the character around as I had been able to, for years.
I got that sorted out and threw up the Elder Jedi tag. I quickly switched it back to MCH and turned my toon 'glowy blue' outside my main showpiece house.
I spent the next hour or so just sitting out front looking around at what I had called my homestead, from day one, going through the datapad looking at my pets, vehicles and droids.
Then, I walked through the perimeter of my double account niche of Talus's south coast, ocean front property on the Flurry server, taking screenies. I did the same with the interior of my show house, on the beach just beside a north-south running river. I made a point to look at every single item inside, how it was placed and what it took to get it all.
I checked my friends list one last time, as no-one on it, had logged in for more than 5mins from the NGE server restart until about noon. I shook my head, smiled and logged out.
That's the complete accounting of my 'last straw'.

This man has my vote for "post of the day."
Amen. Ditto. QFE.
Etc. Etc.
Remember after the NGE was announced and they put it on the test center for a week? I finally managed to log in to the test center to try it out. That experience was my straw.
"Get on the Falcon, kid. This place is going to blow!" Yes, it certainly did blow.
I was devastated at what I saw and I remember logging back on to Intrepid and telling my guild that the reality was way worse than any of us had considered. That and one of my accounts was permabanned from the forums for bumping a post asking about crafters' role in the NGE.

I still don't understand why I stayed subscribed until the NGE bomb was released? I curse myself for not cancelling back when the CU happened.
For me, like many others, the NGE was the main cause I canceled.
For my crafter, the NGE was the freaking apocalypse. No more decay. I was primarily an Armorsmith/Architect. After the NGE, couldn't have that mix. Torched many armor components, simplified the crafting system even more. With the additional character slot that was opened up, the need for alts was destroyed, anyway. Lost items in the crafting process, items didn't work or were useless, all the rest. Plus it was buggy as hell, crafters were combat level 1 and 90% of my guild quit in the two weeks after the NGE. That being 90% of people, not toons, for toons it was more.
For my combat toon, with an additional unlocked Jedi toon, I lasted another month or two. I saw the pathetic game system. The Benny Hill combat, the NPCs firing through walls, the broken specials, the crashes to desktop, most content broken, missions broken, PvP broken, all pets non functional, all weapons/armor converted to shaet, everything. The absolute GUTTING of everything that made SWG great.
I lasted a month or two, looking at my guild dissolve, everything be broken, the "new target audience" playing the game, totally lacking the maturity and sense of community that was there previously. I saw 3 people out of 175 on my friendslist log on during those 2 months.I hoped that they would realize the magnitude of their error and roll back at least some of the servers. When it became apparent that the retarded azzclown musical revue that is $OE would not be doing that, it was time for the door.
I resubbed once in late 2006, just to check out if there was a difference, not worth playing again. I have done a few of the vet trials since then, and the game is still terrible.
I don't care how many new bells and whistles are in there, or, "how much better it is since Nov 15, 2005", the core game is CRAP. The game is not only a sick joke compared to the Pre-CU, it is just plain terrible on its own. And that opinion is one shared by the 200k+ now canceled vets, that have not and will not come back. No amount of fanboi hype can rebut, deny, or change that one simple fact.
Let this game die, and be a lesson to other devs.
Well I'm going to answer the OP and try to stay clear of general statements, flames or claims of friends that know something.
I didn't like the CU and I quit. Found out every other MMO sucked.. so I went back.
After I spent some time with the CU I really didn't mind it that much. I then proceeded to get about 100 people from my friends list to come back. We started getting our mall setup etc..
And got the 14 days to NGE announcement.
That was it..
I lost a lot of good friends as well.. I wouldn't have asked any of them to come back if I knew that was going to happen (the nge and the effect it had in my personal little pool of friends).
So I guess short answer... NGE.
Why don't you let the mods do their jobs? I don't see mod beside your name.

I quit way before the NGE was ever thought up.........
When the Doc buffs were implemented that basically made us all invincible in pve and everyone started doing "SOLO GROUPS" that was the beginning of the end for me. Everyone wore the same set of composite armor and anyone could solo grauls or rancors without much risk and no thought of teaming anymore.
Then started the hologrind in which everyone who used to play an actual useful member of the community dumped their chosen profession in order to grind out (afk mostly) every other profession that they didnt give a crap about just so they could get their glow bat wielding alpha class.
All in all the whole game turned to crap in a very short time and only got worse as time progressed.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.
Same for me.
2 minutes into CU was it for me. Replacing skill boxes with levels was idiotic. Mind you I have used a vet trial and checked out the NGE where I discovered I no longer had a CM or BE, I chose an Officer and Commando as replacements but again it lasted less than a day. Silly mobs would just up and run all over the screen at Steve Austin speed firing away.
Me too. I signed into test the NGE and was seriously saddened for I knew the game what we all once loved to play was coming to an end. Canceled my account that day and let it expire. SWG is dead to me as it is to so many, many others.
NGE
I stuck it out for over 2 YEARS after the NGE, with the unwaivering desperate hope that one of the old games (pre cu or cu) would return. However, when I finally came to the realization that the dream would be nothing more than a few great fading memories....I gave up and canceled.
For me it was having accounts permabaned by "Teh Noob" for ridiculing his stupidity on another forum.
Though that was reversed, all accounts were canceled that day and have been ever since.
i loved holo grinding to try to unlock the foce
i loved questing for my jedi powers in the village
i loved to grind space missions to get my ACE TIE pilot tags !!!
I Loved this game more then any EVER !!! and that is a good 20 years of gaming uder my belt
NGE killed this game totaly killed it for me.. tryed to go back with the free vet time
even tryed to pay for a month so see if that would make me go back ... nope
R I P swg you were the best now your just wow with light sabers to me
i tried the game after the infamous NGE and didn't find it THAT bad until. . . i met a vet from the good ole' days and he showed me a Jedi enclave that was no more that a relic that was in utter disuse. it was downhill from there as i realized how far SWG had fallen.
Well, most of my friends quit with the NGE, but I and a few optimists stayed. I hoped we could work with SOE to get a functional game of some sort back. So, I took Smed's open letter to the community at face value and began to provide feedback regarding bugs and issues, and regarding aspects of gameplay that had been removed, and in my view could be put back, even with the NGE format.
That's when my posts started getting deleted, or moved, or locked, and I even got banned once. I'm still not sure why exactly, since I was never told. My posts on the SOE boards read much as they do on this forum, so I'm really not sure why I was banned, and like I said, I was never informed.
At about the same time, I picked up a copy of StarWars insider with an article on the Trials of Obi Wan. I couldn't believe what I was reading. The article equated the NGE with the Trials of Obi Wan, saying that the Trials changed the combat system, making it more "elegant." The Trials of Obi Wan DID NOT change the combat system. That happened when the NGE was sprung on us, and the NGE wrecked a ton of the new features in the Trials of Obi Wan or rendered them useless by deleting the relevant professions and/or combat skills.
The article then talked about how much more contact with StarWars movie characters there was in the ToOW, and that people shouldn't listen to the few die hard players that were "grousing" about welcome changes to the game. Talk about disgusted. They outright lied about the expansion, in print, lied about the game's functionality, and then took a shot at players who were raising concerns. That broke the camel's back right there.
I later found a time card under my desk in my office, and tried the NGE about 8 months in. It was horrendous and my server was dead. Now I periodically keep an eye on SOE, and warn fellow gamers to watch out for their dishonesty and poor quality service--a bit of a consumer advocate if you will.
The last straw?
After me and my guild had struggled to keep up appearance after the CU, just for the love of Star Wars and what our guild was trying to accomplish, we logged into the NGE on test center.
The day the NGE launched, the guild (100'ish members active) almost as one, cancelled the game, dismantled the guild and went our own ways. Only 2 guildies remained, one because he had a tiny faith(not any more), another because he had a PvP account on Bria, and believed he could still get some enjoyment(not any more) out of the NGE.
I guess, that a Stormtrooper Guild can only take so much abuse before the back is broken..
We had survived Brias rotten PvP'ers stalking, spying abusing, harrasing, infiltrating and worse.
We had survived a full server move to a somewhat elitist allready established RP server.
we had survived fighting PvP'ers and RP'ers, while we wore only Stormtrooper armors, used E-11's and weak buffs as "gods" did not fit our image of Stormtroopers or Star Wars.
We had even survived the CU, despite that it in effect ruined alot of what we had found aceptable about SWG... We could train with our recruits(that was really important for us), no levels... We barely survived mind you.
But then the NGE..... We just couldnt see us surviving yet another blow.
