I agree with Draccan, tho I don't think pvp is the main component of a good mmo, it's a vital one. Part of the fun being online and playing with other players to work together is also working against each other. I don't see any difference from spwaining to many npcs. I like being kept on my toes, and pvp gives the player more excitement for your money. Ganking comes and goes, and doesn't botherme much, and just find creative ways to handle the situation.
Good superhero pvp should be like playing cops and robbers.
Villians commit crimes.
Heroes have to stop them.
That's pretty much what it's supposed to be... I don't see PvP making sense in a superhero game if there were no villains or no heroes.
I really do hope they add some sort of PvP in this game, even without the addition of villains to start, at least something with heroes. If they don't have villains to start they will have to add them eventually. Superhero games are different from other games in the sense that they are stories. You need the protagonist and antagonist.
EDIT: I agree with what Bladin said about world pvp... I would dislike that sort of playstyle in a superhero MMO, really doesn't fit the gamestyle whatsoever. Battlegrounds like in CoX would fit well... as long as they don't become ghost towns like with what happened in CoX. If the game isn't based off of ATs (which I'm pretty sure it won't be, as far as I know it will be partly skill based and partly class based) than battlegrounds should be much more successful.
I'd be surprised if we didn't see both PvP zones as well as objective based PvP scenarios.
Scenarios would be golden in a Super Hero game. Such a wealth of material to work with. Stopping the villains from robbing the bank makes a lot more sense than trying to capture their flag.
Every Super Hero will be able to make a Nemesis character. (Last I heard) This Nemesis would be playable in certain parts of the game. This can easily be used for Scenario PvP until a more sophisticated PvP system can be added; most likely the first expansion.

If only SW:TOR could be this epic...
