Hello,
I am studying the positive effects of video/computer gaming for my PhD and would appreciate it if you could spare approx 10 mins of your time to complete my online questionnaire.

Many thanks.

you do realize that a vast majority of people on forums are getting mildly peeved at people like you. We never get to see the results, and if we do the fricking media gobbles it up for some 'professional' scare mongering.
all in all a nice setup, more text responses than usual.
just show some nice help since there are handfulls of people who are more than capable of reading any anaylsis you write, and plenty like me that will be able to capture the information they need out of it or are interested. There is also plenty of resources here and I'd be willing to bet that the site and community would love to participate to get a copy of the paper sent to them instead of having to hunt it down.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Hello,
I understand that people may become fed-up with "people like me" who ask for participation in research and who never seem to display the results. I can assure you that I have every intention to share the findings from my study and direct those who are interested in the right direction to my paper (if it gets published).
I am sorry that you have such strong feelings about "people like me" but maybe you are making a generalisation based on a minority who have little disregard for the participants of the study.
I will keep you all posted on my findings when the time comes (couple of weeks at a guess)
I used to do these things but I am sorry, no more.
We migth be generalising but when there has not been a single instance of anything else we have very little to go by.
100% is not only a majority, it is from our point of view the only type of researcher out there on this subject.
Good luck though.

Not the only type of researcher on the subject. You have access to about 800 or so people a day here, access to a least 13,000 people a week day and more on weekends if you can get on the front page(multipling by 10 during pre-peak and post-peak hours tends to hold some truth). All of these people are anoymous, likely consider themselves at least a light gamer, and even then are likely more avid than the normal person who plays a few video games(at this site). After you analyze the communnity of a website like that that caters to one thing you pretty much have your pool of people already picked and a sample that is pretty random.
now for games like MMO's they would be truely interesting for a psychologist just because you can see a slightly truer face of people. And even see repeats of real world stuff, all the way down to micro-cultures in an MMO. To what happens when a large group/community/almost-race enters a country, AKA any game that you have Goons enter for the first time(somethingaweful.com) in a very accelerated time scale(that even allows full blown conflict to happen, displacement, and other junk).
Can't blame curiosity, especially when it is kinda a part of their job. However there is such a bad rep of follow up that surveys are typically against the rules at quite a few community sites now that I wouldn't be surprised if surveys become illegal here within a few years.
