MMOsite: You have been making improvements to the siege battle system in Age of Conan. What does the system look like now? What are the most important improvements you have made to the system?

Erling Ellingsen: We certainly have, the siege system is shaping up to be an incredible experience. Just today I was looking through some of the current interface implementations for the siege system. This might not be what we end up with in the final build of the game, but right now it's basically this calendar where you choose when your battlekeep is vulnerable and other guilds will be able to come in and attack your battlekeep in that timeframe. Your guild will get points based on how their siege is going. Kill an enemy player and you might get one point. Burn down one of their buildings and you might get fifty! It's an incredibly intense and rewarding experience, and it's very social. Well, social in the way of killing each other brutally and dancing on your enemies corpses while you get dead drunk.

MMOsite: Warhammer Online is another highly anticipated title which will also hit the market in 2008. How do you see the competition between Age of Conan and Warhammer Online? What's the big difference between them?

Erling Ellingsen: I am very much looking forward to Warhammer Online (hi, Mythic, how are y'all?) and I think it's going to be a great game. One of the reasons why I think Age of Conan and Warhammer Online is going to co-exist quite nicely is because they are two very different games. I think they are going for a more traditional approach to some of their gameplay elements, such as combat, while we are trying to do something more different. We're also putting a bit more emphasis on storytelling, I think, especially with our level 1-20 gameplay that is more similar to a traditional single-player role-playing game. And, of course, the visual appearance of the two games is radically different! We're also going for the mature angle, trying to cater to an audience that is eighteen years of age or older.

I think the last answer above is spot on.

Good read. Actually had some new information bits.
