I really don't think a discussion like this is about "Street cred", like someone who has played for a certain amount of time is worth more respect or whatever crazy lonelly people think playing computer games will give them ("Bow to meeeee, because I owned a Nintendo 8 bit!!" "Yeah right, yer a sad looney, you are")
I DO think a discussion like this is more about the fact that today, MMO discussions and arguments are attacked form two different directions, and those two sides argue from completly different viewpoints based on their level of experience. They can not agree on many things because they have played completly different games and more importantly, one group have no idea what the other side talk about.
I started playing arcade games in 1973. My cousins had a pong machine at home in the middle 70s. I have owned every console and computer on the market together with my brother, who is a game programmer except the Texas Instrument computer and the Philips Keyboard console, because frankly, those two sucked. Oh, and I did not own the Vectrex, because at that time I did not have any more money. Just so you know where in the spectrum I am.
Now... The problem appears when a discussion about how to create succesful MMOs pop up, as the ALWAYS do, 2-3 times a day in a forum like this.
Oldschools talk about Questing:
Someone mention AO, and the infinite mission generator with random dungeons and mobs, and an almost infinite reward system.
Oldschool start talking about the pros and cons of Infinite Questing.
Wannabes say: "Whaaaa?! in WoW they had tons of quests too?!!"
Oldschools talk about sandbox:
People dreamilly wanders into the world of UO, and talk with love about their Tailor Woodsman Mage who made the most wonderful outfits and blew people up like firecrackers, then went home to practice some archery, doing exactly what they felt like at any time.
Wannabes say "Whaaaaa?!! but... but... classes?! Can't work wihtout classes!! In Wow, they... they... it's succesful!!"
And so on and so forth... It's not about right or wrong, about respect or disrespect..
It is about two sides where one have no clue what the other side is saying.
"This is not a game to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force"
Read my profile. See "man" there? Yeah, I like FPS games, maybe because I was a Woman Marine.
Man doesn't have to be classified as a gender. Especially how I said it, call it the hippy term person whatever you want to call it, but it has no place in gender.
Secondly you started categorizing people again. Classifying women to certain aspects of gaming is not only politically incorrect it is ignorant. I know a ton of women who play any genre just like any other gamer. As I said it is a matter of TASTE. Anyone can like anything, it just depends who you are and what you like to do.
and i don't like elitist pricks, did they start with WoW, Eq, Uo, L.O.R.D or something else. They're still elitist pricks if they diss players based on how long they have been playing. You don't need to be nuclear scientist to play mmo.
And grammar whores? They're worst of them all. Not everyones native language is English if you haven't realized, it's not even most spoken language in the world.
Playing multiplayer games since L.O.R.D also known as Legend of the red dragon, and for you kiddos who have no idea what i'm talking about check: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Red_Dragon and i don't like elitist pricks, did they start with WoW, Eq, Uo, L.O.R.D or something else. Old school mmorpg people are the ones that don't tell others to stfu or get over it..they played at a time when people were it it to have fun and help others out.Not be rude, insensitive and down right hateful.
