It seems that Stargate worlds might become a free to play micro transactions game.

man i hope not, i really hate that idea. all we need is another one of those free to play piece of shits that arn't worth anything.
mmo's are going in the wrong direction if they think im going to pay money for weapons and armor rather than 15$ a month. I will stick to console gaming if they pull this shit off.
Nobody wants to play in an empty game. But if its free, people will stick around.
In a world where the # of people online is one of the main attractions, micro transactions reign supreme
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
What if it's free but not a piece of shit? You seem to equate free with horrible, when in fact, something can be free and good. It's just that so far everything that's free has come straight from Asia, and are nearly all grind games with no depth whatsoever.
Also, I've played a lot of free games, and I can't name any that sell weapons and armor in their cash shop, every shop that I've seen sells consumables in order to keep things selling.
Now with 57.3% more flames!
Micro transaction games are not free, and for people to keep implying they are either don't play them or have a character on one that they abandoned a year ago and think they play.
And some bean counter probably gave them a statistical model to prove that micro transaction bring a lot more that 15 dollars a month per customer.
oh man...that will just kill it for me

Yup, they are not free. And considering the history of microtransaction games, it's no wonder there are players who refuse to play them. They have all been awful grind games.Microtransactions have one major revenue factor that subs don't have which is why accountants love them. Once you pay for a sub, you really can't pay more even if you wanted to (although character/server transfer fees are in effect, microtransactions). With microtransactions, there's no limit so you are not barring the player from spending more money.
cool looks like I won't need to hide in player controlled worlds and indy games to avoid the hardcore MMOer crowd.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Who here is talking about paying for weapons and armor? You can't buy weapons and armor in the vast majority of item shop games, that's not how the business model works.
I think before some start judging we should actually wait to see what they offer from their shop. If they offer consumables or vanity items then I have no problems with it because it would be a totally optional thing. if they turn around and force you to pay from the shop on a consistent basis then I am not sure players would like that. Also from the article they said they SGW will be a boxed product, so yeah they game will not be free.
Take a good long hard look at the game list and tell me that every game that charges a monthly fee is actually worthy of a monthly fee to begin with. Maybe a handfull at best is actually worth paying a monthly fee for. It is just something to think about when companies charge you 50 for the box, 70+ for the collectors edition, a forced monthly fee payment to play as well as making you pay 40 bucks for the expansion. Just food for thought here really. Bottom line is no matter what the model is, we all want very good games to play.
either way i think this game is going to be great!
i personally cant stand microtransactions and refuse to play said games.
well, this just fell off the radar
not necessarily because of the microtransactions which i really don't like, though i am willing to see what they have in mind - but because they want me to pay for the box/download for a game using this type of payment model
sorry - it doesn't work that way
I'm out.
Only reason developers slap "f2p" on their game is because they can't find enough justification in their products to demand players to pay subscriptions.
Heck, look at SOE.. Since Smedley failed at MMO class, and his games barely are good enough to be released, nevertheless subscription worthy, he's now chanting to the skies how microtransactions is the manna from heaven...
The last of the Trackers
One less game to keep track of, now.
*sigh* The list keeps shrinking.
Thats... really unfortunate news. I am a big fan of Stargate and was planning on giving this one a try, but if they did go ahead with microtransactions I would just pass it over. It just isn't what I'm looking for, and I don't think such a system produces either a quality product or a community that I would want to spend time in. Everything 'free' usually ends up like battlenet. And money for in game possessions just seems so wrong, like buying gold or powerleveling services.
Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence.
Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.
I'm a bit surprised by your reply Zorvan. For as long as I've been reading your post on these forums. You've always come off, as a pretty level headed person. I'm surprised you aren't at the very least willing to try it before passing judgment on it.
In War - Victory.
In Peace - Vigilance.
In Death - Sacrifice.
It sounds like he is a 'producer' versus a developer. So he's a money man. A suit. The enemy. And Matrix Online is nothing to be proud of. It's just another amazing, awesome IP that got pissed away...
The first problem I see with free to play and microtransaction is you are not going to get the box sale. So assuming you sell a million boxes at $50 bucks a pop, that's $50 million dollars they lose right off the bat. Putting monetary value on ingame objects and game money means they can probably be taxed by the government. That's a whole other can of worms I'd rather not open. Also, the game no longer becomes about who has great skill or how much time they invest but about how big there wallet is.
I would think month to month revenue would fluctuate more than companies that charge month to month or give 3 month or even 6 month special rates. So probably they would have to have ingame advertising too.
I just think it's the wrong way to go. Maybe instead of screwing up another cool IP like Stargate, he could help fix Matrix Online.
Your wrong and have a COMPLETELY confused view about this interview. They were talking about ANOTHER product, NOT SGW. Read the large plot of text above that SGW screenshot (even though that is completely confusing to begin with).
That dev is NOT speaking about SGW's model plan.
The Theory of Conservative Conservation of Ignorant Stupidity:
Having a different opinion must mean you're a troll.
Microtransactions do not fundamentally improve the odds for a given developer to hit pay dirt. Why? Because it's how the game is fun that makes people want to play and if the given items that you pay for with real money make it more fun. If the game doesn't fulfill both, then the given title will fail: period and end of story. I'm not faulting developers for finding alternate payment systems, it may work, but I think the reality is that MMOs will probably not exist in the current forms we see today in five years (with respect to new titles (and excluding currently operating titles)). So I don't see why developers think RMT/microtransaction is some sort of panacea. I'd like someone (Gameloading or even some economist for friggin' sake) to explain this one for me.

The idea of a cash shop pretty much kills it for me as well; I like my achievements to reflect my skills (or lack thereof) as a gamer, not my disposable income. Even if the cash shop items are entirely cosmetic, I won't play a game that is fundamentally based on the flexing of financial e-peens.
Holy crap, talk about failing reading!!!!
Half the people in this topic need to be forced to repeat third grade.
And that's not even including them being prejudgmental.
Further proof that 90% of the posters here should not be allowed to play video games.
Failing troll is failing.
I know it's been said over and over... so just add my to the list. I won't pay an MMO with an unpredictable monthly charge. I don't want my MMO gameplay metered out like my cell phone service. I will only play an MMO with a flat monthly rate. Any sort of item shop, nickle and dime people to death set up is just out of the question for me.
-----Zero Punctuation Eve Online Review-----
If by nickel and dimeing you mean only paying for what you want and not the other stuff...
If if hurts you that much that the kid can have the pink hat cause he makes an extra 2 bucks a month... I think you need to re-evaluate the importance of the pink hat.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
