I forget the correct terminology of what im talking about but I am wondering if characters in this game are pass through.
I seem to remember reading about this in Conan b4 but have been unable to find anything definitive lately.
It really has a huge effect on play of the game as well as the type of character I will chose, espcially since this combat is so positional.
Can anyone answer this definitively? perhaps with a link?
Thank you in advance

Collision detection can get really bumpy and an overall mess in crowded areas if each PC has its entire footprint, bazaars would be near impassable.
They have said yes, that collision detection is in. Many guilds will use this in pvp to their advantage.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
Collision detection is enabled for both the players and NPCs. It makes for some interesting dynamics for both the PvE and PvP game. I'm sure there is a negative aspect to this as well, thus no developer prior to Ultima Online had it enabled.
thank you for the replies and yes collision detection is the term I couldnt remember.
I am excited to have this in game. It is something I look forward to.
However, and correct me if im wrong, my understanding is that there is a reason it has never been MMos to date and it has to do with hacking.
My understanding is that having a "hard" character means characters information and location cant just be stored on the server, like it could be if we were "pass through." It has to be transitted to those of us around the character(the same zone) so that if we happen accross them we would collide. This means that people will find ways to read the packets being sent to our computer and use that to create map hacks and locators. It also means that stealth can be obsoleted if these hacks actually exist. I know collision isnt needed to have a hack to locate people because some games without colision have had them. But I understand it makes it much easier.
Ive been playing MMos and FPS since the day UO openned its servers and the 1 thing Ive come to realize is that if people can cheat, they will. Much like a few gold farmers can ruin an economy, a few cheaters can ruin a battlefield.
So I guess my question is what exactly will there, or is there, in place to prevent these types of packet reading hacks? Has Funcom addressed this? I hope its not just a /report system and that there is a more proactive approach. My experience is that GMs get sick of not just answering all the /report calls but also begin to resent the people who actually do the /reporting. I cant say I blame them as my gaming experience has also led me to beleive many gamers out there cry foul when in fact there was none. It must be unbearable responding to all the "zomg he is hacking!!" complaints.
There is a negative effect which we also saw in Ultima Online.
People blocked the doors into shops and whatever so sometimes it was a pain to get into a shop because someone on a horse blocked the way.

To virtuella :
Think of the scenery of a medieval city. All shop vendors have kiosks in a wide area in an outdoor market somewhere, not inside.
And there is also stealth. I won't go saying anything beyond that, since it's work in progress.
To Consequence:
As you said, hacking is a problem in general. I have no idea what Funcom is doing to address it, although I'm sure you'd expect what's standard protection for this gender at least. Besides, as you yourself pointed out, the collision detection presence is not indicative of an easy to hack system.
hehe i see the following scene before my eyes.
Virtuella start to sneak and walks into town.
"BUMP" -- "
Stealthed player "HEY DON'T PUSH"
Virtuella "ohh sorry"
Virtuella Sneaks away and BUMPS into another stealthed character.

Some devs have said C.D. will be disabled in hubs.
But not in PvP, they want you to block the doorways, keep the attackers out! for example!
On the other hand the game does have very impressive knockback skills, something I think i think i read was available to all classes.
PvE and blocking:
In DDO you can block NPC vs PC ( not PC with PC) so you can use it for interesting ....strategys to kill mobs. Mostly the one that get the agro use a range weapon, and two guys block the corridor.
This made sense in a game (DDO) where you get no PX killing mobs. On other games could be game breaking ( blocking + agro + px per kill = infinite px )
