well, if ya wanna save some dough, nothing really utilizes quad core chips yet (aside from multitasking), then go with a dual core.
I run Quad-Core CPU's myself.. Core2's and Xeon's. Thread enabled games and app's... ftw.

If they can ever keep em in stock.
Ya you really have to watch 'em, but I can't say enough good things about them. it is faster, cheaper, runs cooler, consumes less power and overclocks better than the e6850.
to the op, only get the quad if you are planning on doing heavy multitasking. If you only plan on gaming, buy a dual.
I just have a dual core and I can run norton and ad-aware at the same time while surfing the internet and listening to iTunes without a stutter.

As others have said, go with the e8400 if your comp is for gaming. I just ordered 1 for myself earlier this week.
If your a RTS hardcore fan, go Quad.
If you like anything else for pc gaming, go DualCore. No reason to go Quad unless you like to multi-task while you game. Some will say they can run a anti-virus, rip a dvd, and run tons of background apps while they game with their Quads and use that as their point. However..no one does a anti-virus every single day, rips dvds, or is unable to keep a clean system.
Only genre for pc that really makes Quads make sense is RTS.
