Has racism always been a part of MMOs?

Now you can finally unleash all the rage you've gathered when being forced to keep such comments inside yourself, and without suffering any consequences either!.

is this thread serious? Anyhow be thankful yer not a gnome, there fun to punt, throw, kick, eat, play gnome bowling with 'em, make jokes about how elevators smell different to gnomes because there nose is at ass level. And toanswer your question has there always been racism in mmos...well i think to be serious and look at the larger picture wherever there are humans there is racism of some type, or there is the hen pecking, and the pecking order, but hell man i play mmos to escape all that bs and hope that serious racist and fascist have a painful afterlife. But there is joking too, which can be confused with racism, ya know haha about the gnome punting and a hehehe about elvven males looking effeminant or however it is spelled, If racism truly bothers you I would find your local A.R.A chapter near you, which stands for anti racism association and keep this crap out of gaming forumns. I dont think complaining about racism on a faceless internet does anygood, you need to face the face of it and do what you must to stop it if yer really into trying to stop any kind of racism.

Every time I go to the Warcraft general forum there always seems to be at least 4 or 5 new posts on the front page flaming people who play Elf characters. I played WoW for a little over a year before BC came out as a human warlock, and I was excited to play the new Blood Elf race when they were announced, but now I regret ever having rolled one.
Every day I'm reminded that I picked a race that people deem gay, and ruined the Horde. It was bad enough just seeing it on the forums, but now I'm experiencing it everywhere. Just a few days ago there was a GUcomic about an orc relishing all the dead belfs on Sunwell Plateau, and it got me wondering if this kind of hatred was experienced in other games as well? Regardless, I've learned my lesson, and will never again roll an elf in an online rpg.
Ever notice how you bonded with your buddies all through life ragging on that one guy in your group whos annoying? If you havent your probably the guy and everyone else uses you as a bonding experience.

People love to have things in common, and if everyone can agree that one person is a moron.. for whatever reason be it haircut, voice, race, race of character, it gives them something to have in common, which is something people strive for.

I don't so much think at the heart of it all racism is the common factor in most of these actions. In my eyes, it's bigotry. Some people want to take out their aggression on something that reacts instead of something inanimate or productive like normal people, so they do so without caring about the consequences. The anonymity of the internet makes it even easier. Race is just one of the easiest excuses people have ever had. If a game had all the same races, they'd turn to bashing armour choices I bet. It's already close to that in Mexico.

Roleplayed racism ain’t da same as REAL racism ’coz it ’as no ’armful effectz. If a person getz upset ’coz I call ’is stunty avatar a "stunty" den he right needz to develop betta emotional strengf.

What I really wanted to know was if this kind of hatred from the playerbase directed towards an in-game race was common in other MMO's.

No, only WoW has a community that bad. :D

imo, you're taking the subject way too seriously.
There's no hatred, and definitely no racism. It's just random bashing for the hell of it, keeping game forums/chat active.
Just like you're keeping mmorpg.com forums active with a random thread topic for the hell of it. :p

Its all gnomish propaganda really.. Those short little bastards have always had it out for the elves..

Seriously though,  the racial hatred goes back way further then just being an MMORPG thing.. Most fantasy books you read will have hatred between the various races that inhabit that particular fantasy world.... It would be a pretty bland game where all races got along with each other..

I am wondering where you've seen an elf off-line?

Oh, that's right, they live in New Zealand.

I know you're old enough to remember offline. Don't play shy with me.

Welcome to the RPG experience. What you have recently realise in WOW is in actualy en issue that pre-dates video games themselves, since the time when Gary Gagax added the Elf Class to  Basic D&D.

So Yeah it's not just a WOW thing, it's in every game (not just MMOs) that lets the player pick  a race/class. The WOW crowd just happends to be very Large and Vocal... and generaly stupid.

So don't let it get to you. Wheter it be you, me and anybody else posting or not, Play what you Feel like and to heck whit everybody else, even if that means I'm playing a Tree-Hugging-Hippi-Eared-Whore.

    Keep it Simple

Don't give up on the elves yet. I, myself, don't see that in other games' forums. I think what you're experiencing is what people usually refer to as "how the community of WoW is composed predominantly of young players". By young, I believe most people mean mis-behaving adolescents (because there are the good ones, let's not forget them). So chill out, enjoy YOUR game and roll how many elves you want in WoW or in any other game.

Thank you all for the kind replies, I guess I was just tired of being flamed for playing a character I had invested so much time in.

  • BigdavoBigdavo Member UncommonPosts: 1,863

Played WoW for about 2 years, played a night elf the whole time, never got flamed, played a belf for a short time, never got flamed.

But then again, the server I went on was very friendly and fun and had very few immature kiddies.

Well, if its any help for you, if I would play WoW at all, I would definitely want to play Blood Elf. As I'm a Darkelf fan and WoW's Bloodelf is the closest you can get to Darkelf in that game.

Other than that, meh. Who cares what WoW kiddies post ? In a game with 10 Mio customers, I'm really not surprised that theres some idiots around.

I have never seen anything like that in my own games.

Racism in games creates content.  Whether or not thats a good thing I don't know.

Blood Elves were meant to attract all the pretty peoplez to the Horde, because it was underpopulated. Yes, Blood Elves ruined the BLOODTHIRSTY, SAVAGE Horde by bringing physical weakness! Shame! But Gnomes get the worst. You should know that! Alliance, Horde, even Blizzard picks on the poor little guys. I don't think racism is a part of MMOs persay, but it exists sometimes.

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Ehhh .... you seem to have all your experiences from WoW.

There's far more to the story:

    1. It's not a case of players in WoW hating Blood Elves, or any race. It's a case of Blizzard not listening to the players and taking the easy way out. Blizzard claimed "new content" was added. All they did was add a few "new" races. When instead they could have re-looked at classic WoW PvP and brought it BACK which is what the majority of players wanted. Or added tons of new land masses, quests, available to all players (not just high level players.) It took almost no work to increase the level cap, and make "new" races which are really mirrors of races on either side (a "new" race was given to Horde which is really a mirror of an existing race on the Alliance side, and the same was done for Alliance.)

    2. During Halloween Blizzard proved they could create some seriously ORIGINAL races... IF they wanted to. They allowed players to shape-shift into some very, very, intresting creatures !!!! It was for looks only though.
