Only one "source" leak has been proved to be right in SWG's history and that was the guy with the one post forum account on the official boards that leaked the NGE a couple of months before it went live, since then everyone's jumped on the bandwagon, made their own shit up and attributed it to their "source".

Starsider is a good server less lag than Bloodfin and Bria ans a lot of people there too!

If you want any population at all, and that isn't going to be much, go to Bria or Bloodfin. It won't be many people, possibly 100 on a server at one time, but you will be hardpressed to find anyone playing on the other servers.
If you are going to waste your time playing SWG, use the Vet Trial, do NOT pay a dime until you have played for free.

People keep saying there are many people returning, but the server stats haven't really changed so how many could there really be?
Also, what would you define as a good amount of people? 5? 10? 50? 1000?
I really cannot give a number sorry. I will say that there is a good amount of people running around on Tat, I've seen a good amount of people in Space, I know there is a good amount of Rebels and Imp's running around. Most of the PvP base's get turned every 2 hours or so.
Not only that but Starsiders does have active Player City's, mostly Role Players and RP'ed city's as well. So people tend to be in those from time to time. And I have seen Vet Players returning and *gasp* enjoying the game! Most of them like the hard new content via the Heroic Mobs, and yes it is "hard" and even if you follow the guides you can fail the thing...
Still again I don't know the numbers as I'm not sitting in game and counting how many people are running around. It is much, MUCH bigger then my old server of Kauri.
