The movement of your Character and attacks are very fluid
The User Interface is very clean and customizable, especially with the recent update it makes setting options a dream compared to some other games
A third point it is *very* casual friendly.. blizzard has been adding more and more content to appease to the masses and its worked, they may have lost some Raiding / Hardcore fans like my self, since its changed alot from what it was at 60, but Blizzards a company and they're goal is to get the most people playing the game and they do it well.
I would say the interface was a mess at the time I was trying WoW. It was not movable, it was not scaleable (think that was added now). You could not move your minimap anywhere you wanted, actually you couldn't move with anything at all. Yes they allowed people to do custom mods for interface, but from what i've heared they are bugged very often, and the fact they allow community to do the job for them, doesn't make the original interface any good.
I also remember the game was not polished when I played it. Invisible mobs were attacking me quite often, and I recall the bug where when you attacked a mob, it stayed where it was. And after a while it started to hit you, and you couldn't swing back, because you didn't know where mob actually is. And this was happening all the time I remember.
It comes down to the two basic reasons why this junk is so popular. Majority prefers simplicity over depth/complexity. And secondly, there were so many kids playing warcraft 3 over battle.net that it would be a surprise if any game bearing a warcraft name wouldn't be equally popular.
Its addictive as hell. You see now and then on the news people with big problems kicking the addiction. But, and there is always a but, the mmo genre is, as a rule very addictive so WoW aint anything special there. On how good the game is? Well, it all come down to personal taste and references. The reason I liked the game for a while was that its polished, easy and quite fun to play for a while. But then I hit endgame. That is a whole another chapter. That is where the grind begin, all the instances x100(eck) for gear, grind gold for raiding bills(repair/pots/consumables), grind rep for gear, grind heroics for tokens and so on. WoW for me is a fun game to level, but it suck monkeyballs at endgame. Its severly lacking in that area. And I'm the type of player that usually get to endgame quite quickly, and stay there most of my playing time. When I read about people saying how great the game is and then read that their highest toon is some 55'ish i laugh. They hardly know what Karazhan/SSC/Magth/BT is, and know nothing of endgame. Ask any of those if they know where to enter SSC, and what SSC is for that matter. Or how to beat any random raidboss. You get ??? back. Havent got the count of how many times I had to educate new members in the guild on how to beat Netherspite f.ex. And he is silly easy.
I'm a reader, not a poster...but this thread is quite constructive so I wanted to share my own WOW thoughts.
Wow broke onto the scene and a huge population of gamers migrated over with a mixture of anticipation of Blizzard having an MMO but also as a revolt so to speak of the current game situations. I remember Lineage 2 and Horizons were all the talk in the Theed Cantina in SWG, because they were so good? No, because everyone was already looking for the next big thing because when you can solo any content in a game it's time to move on (Pre-pre-pre everything SWG). EQ2 came out before WoW but few had the system for it, and many were waiting to see if it was just EQ with a 2 added to the name. At this time people were just starting to get into online gaming also, not everyone was ready for hardvore, grinding, PVP, or raiding...just trying it out. I remember seeing EQ on the shelves with about 3 expansion packs and thinking it was too late to try, I'll stick with game X until WOW comes out.
So, Bilzzard planted their seeds when the ground was most fertile and harvested at peak ripeness.
Is ripeness even a word?
So here we all are, loving the simplicity, the addons, the social feeling, the music, neat new gear, and so on. Those of us that were experienced gamers became somewhat bored after a year. These are the people that still yearn for MC style raids, world pvp, and old school activities. The game grew at an unthinkable rate and just when we wanted to quit and move on we were either enticed by a new group of friends, new content, or falling back on "it's the best thing going". I personally was playing EQ2 and had yet to find a way that WOW was better but gave WOW its due because if nothing else I could always find something to do.
As most have stated, WOW is an easy game, easy to learn, and doesn't require a whole lot of time investment to have fun. It has its strong points too, Blizzard paved the way for many game details which will become the standard from this point on. There are many, many games out there that are better than WOW but no games out there that are better than WOW and appeal to just about everyone. Think of it like this (if you like beer), WOW is Budweiser and games like EQ2, DAOC, AC, and Shadowbane are microbrews that you have to acquire a taste for but once you do you can never go back to Bud - unless you're just hardup for a cheap buzz.
Most people love WOW, their sub base will continue to remain stable for quite some time, there is probably not a next big thing. As more and more people become veterans they will come to expect more and more importantly a change of scenery. This will be when WOW declines, it won't really come as a result of someone knocking them down.
So what makes WOW so good? Right place, right time, and the ability to suck in the masses. After that it's just a place that people come to play and haven't stopped yet. A decent, solid game that can still get the blood pumping with promises of more fun in the future. There is nothing great about it however, nothing life changing, but it was almost exclusively the defining moment in the MMO new generation and for that Blizzard deserves respect.
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

Wow, have you even played since beta. The problems you mention are pretty much nonexistent. If you don't like the game fine but at least make statements based on the current state of the game and not ancient history. Also don't take this as me trying to defend WoW becuase I have a love/hate relationship with the game. I just don't see the point in even posting your comments when they are so dated as admitted by yourself.
When I quit WoW(some 5-6 months ago), invisible mobs hitting you from the other zone, on the other continent where still a problem(ok, an overstatement but bleh). Sometimes a mob would become stuck in the game and become unattackable, but it could attack you all it wanted. Annoying when that happened with bossmobs/elites. And afaik that bug been with the game since launch. Funny though how some people defend it to the last drop. WoW got bugs still, but the general public are either too stupid/ignorant, or they just dont care about them. It was real fun too when I was on my priest raidhealing the maintank and when I pressed the key shortcut the heal wouldnt cast. Had to use the mouse. Happened from time to time. Nope, my keyboard worked just fine, and still do.
For its time WoW was a great addition to the MMO industry, it provided alot of things we as gamers (not all gamers but alot) seek in a MMO. But with the lack of content over the years, it has only hurt itself. And like any great MMO I have seen over the past 13 years of playing them, it slowly takes a back seat to the next generation. Like the cycle of life lol... I don't think it will ever die by no means, people will continue to play it. I just don't see it being the game it once was, imo it peaked and is on its way back down the other side.

I think its hilarious how people equate WOW's success to things other than the quality of the game. I constantly hear people arguing that people like WOW simply because it is made by Blizzard. I think people forget that Blizzard got to where it is today because they make the very best games in whatever genre they decide to enter. They take the good parts of previous games in the genre and attempt to minimize the annoyances. This in a nutshell is exactly what World of Warcraft is. I have played nearly every MMORPG that has come out since Ultima Online and I have never seen a game that comes anywhere near WOW's polish. The game runs perfectly on old and new computers alike and still manages to look great years after release. The PvE and PvP are leagues above the competition and are constantly improving with each update Blizzard makes. The customizability of the UI puts all other MMORPGs to shame and the pure fluidity of the gameplay at every level is vastly superior to the other games in the genre. Please don't misunderstand my admiration for the game as a dislike for other MMORPGs. As I mentioned before, I have played and thoroughly enjoyed many other massives. I also understand that some aspects of WOW are not what some MMORPG players are looking for. I myself have been burnt out on WOW several times in the past for a variety of reasons. I just feel that credit should be given where credit is due. WOW is where it is today for one simple reason: it is hands-down the best MMORPG that has been made to date.
You made me log into my account here to respond. Thank you !! I was getting bored of just trolling.
Bliz won with timing and simplicity when it came to the MMO market. Its competitor on release was unfinished, buggy, and system requirements were too high. It made no innovative improvements, it was a side-step graphically... I am baffled by people (not you sir) that call this game a beautiful game, I could take a comic book and flip through the pages to get equal graphics.... but this is just personal preference, I enjoy realism, I do not enjoy trees made from two sheets of paper inserted into each other down the middle.
The PVE is .... tedious at best. Lockout timers are a retarded mechanism which only forces longevity of end game. Gear is the only contributing factor with regards to each encounter. Player skill is next to meaningless when you compare an average player to an extremely skilled player. The encounters themselves are fairly well constructed, I would have liked to see more use of the environment (I think EQ2 beats WoW in raid encounters.. again personal preference)
If we are talking about PVE below level 70, I recommend playing almost ANY other game. This is what you call a quest grind. Don't bother LFG unless you like doing nothing while you wait for a <healer, tank, CC> especially at mid levels.
The PVP in WoW... afterthought. Only currently are they seeing its potential, but to implement it they only added another time sink.. Arena. Once again with a weekly lock (of sorts). Open world PVP? You mean ganking lowbies?! Wicked FUN!
I was amused with this game for quite some time, but it was always a back-burner kind of game. Whenever the most anticipated failed, I hit up WoW. 6 lvl 70s later, I am officialy done for good. Counterstrike:Source and hopefully one of the upcomings can entertain me on my nights off.
edit: not to mention the annoying bugs... having to be up some guys ass to attack him in PVP. Attacking a mob to have it not physically move on your screen (but apparently server-side it was fine and could still attack me) And my hats off to all those arena system exploiters who sold points. I always loved getting raped in 30seconds or less. YaY 2100+ people fighting our 1500 ranked team!
The commercial success of WoW can be attributed to three things:
- Solid and polished
-Accessible
-Being the very best has a low IQ requirement like 35.
So, in conclusion, lot of people ranging from the utterly stupid to the smartish(anyone with brains moves on, let's be honest here), from the casual to hardcore, from pentium 3 to geforce 9800 user has something to do in this game. That's all good.
My personal gripe is, we, those who want a challenge in a game, who want complex mechanics got raped for at least a decade. It's like the popularity of blackjack over bridge, with the only difference, that I can play bridge if I have a deck of cards and a few smart friends, whereas I need a developer to create a game for smart people.
Yes, call me elitist, arrogant, whatever you like, doesn't change the fact, that other than EVE, smart people have nothing to play.
No attribute allocation, auto landing spells ... talent trees ... what a disgrace to the name of RPG. Sickening.

I don't know of your response is pointed at me or not but I was trying to say these problems are not as rampnat as they were when Thillian obviously played the game. I played the game for 2 yrs and have no reason to lie or boast about the game seeing as I no longer play. Also show me an MMO that is bug free, oh wait you can't.

You lost all credibilty of being intelligent when you made small minded generalizing comments like these.
If you are so smart then please feel free to create an intelligent MMO. I enjoyed my time in WoW but have moved on and would love a more complex game just like yourself, but in no way does the fact that I and others liked or have enjoyed the game bring itno question our intelligence.
I didnt say any mmo'a aint got bugs. It wasnt ment like that. What I ment is that some people paint a highly unnaccurate picture of WoW, and that post was ment for them. Game still got problems, there is no need denying it. And sometimes the fixes to classes are totally unneccesary. They try to make everyone even in the pvp field, and that is bull. If you want that, go play some fps, not an mmo. In a class based game, some classes will always be better at specific jobs than other.
Wow is great for different reasons to different people. Many of the reasons have already been listed. There is another however that some find distasteful when spoken in the same sentence as the acronym MMO. The fact is that, amoungst a multitude of other things WoW allows players to solo or duo quests and content when leveling a lot of the time. As I said, some people cannot fathom that an MMO should be allowed to do this. And for that reason there have been many arguments about this on many forums.
But the fact remains that by doing so, it allows players to pick the game up and put it down whenever they like without the need to carry on playing due to feeling obliging to their group that they have waited hours for. Don't get me wrong, all instances require groups or raids. But players are not gimping themselves too much by not doing them whilst leveling.
In this day and age of constantly rushing about and filling our lives with the "rat race" and procreation, we don't have much time left to sit and enjoy a game. WoW is flexible to fit around such hectic lifestyles...........until they hit maximum level

I like the way you make those generalizations.
I mean, there are a lot of idiots playing WoW, but you're just being a douche when you say that everyone who plays it is like that.
Not everyone (casuals) wants to spend their free time developing and fine tuning their toon. They just want to jump on for an hour or two after work/school/whatever and have some fun.
Personally, I would like a deeper MMO, but I don't think we're going to see one for quite some time. Until then, I'll just settle for simple minded fun.
WoW is great because nearly anyone can pick it up and have fun with it. You start off with very few abilities and killing mobs is extremely easy. They hit for about 1-2 health per swing in the newbie zones. Leveling is very fast at the start and you gain new abilities pretty quick.
Soon the world draws you in with the multitude of quests and highly stylized zones. No the graphics aren't state of the art, but the environments are full of life and look good.
As you reach endgame, there's several things people can do. They can run battlegrounds and gear up with honor. They can for pvp arena teams, they can run 5 mans and heroics for loot. They can join small guilds and do the small raids. They can join larger guilds and do the larger more difficult raids. Or you can level up a different character for a different experience or even a different faction.
The game is simple for anyone to play, and deep enough to keep most people interested in it for months, if not years.
WoW raiding is wearing on a lot of veterans, but their content is incredibly polished and fairly challenging. The latest Sunwell instance is very well designed, and just shows why Blizzard is just really damn good at what they do.
Is this game going to appeal to everyone? Of course not, but it's incredibly accessible, looks pretty good, has a lot of character, and very very few bugs. It also helps that requirements to run the game are very low. Most people don't have to run out and buy a new video card just to play the game.
I also think WoW was the first mmo for many people, and to many seemed like a much much much deeper and better Diablo 2.
I'm up in the air whether or not I want to play wow in the next expansion. I've played since release and it's hard to be excited about the game anymore, as not much has fundamentally change. Sure new abilities and spells will be fun, but the paradigm will still remain: Kill bigger and badder boss. Yeah, the thrill of getting it down is fun, but I want something radically different. I want to explore a new world, not just a new continent. Anyway, I'll be checking out AoC and Aion, but they certainly have big shoes to fill if they are gonna draw me away from wow. I don't expect perfection, but I expect the basics to be solid and fun.
But end game is allso good and so is the road to 70,I know players that have been subed for over a year an not 70 yet and they are having a blast still.I had a blast to 70 to but it only took me 2 months.
I see it alot at freinds houses and they all are hooked on difernt aspecs I dont like, end game raiding or building twinks or BG's.
"Arenas" have a place for the hardcore pvper ,And you need to be just as good as in guild wars to kick some ass.I hate to say it but in the inbalance of things there some hardcore skill involed in high rated arena fights and LOTS of people dont mind the few class's that dominate in high rated Arena,.
"Raiding for epic's" is allso something of a hot topic it seems, keeps alot of players playing for ever and they stay brainwashed by it,My freind raids on a tuesady at 8 or something, and if his house was on fire at that time he would burn befor missing his raid.
"The road to 70" as a heavy gamer I can do it in a few months, but theres TONS of people that may never get there and they stay intrested for years.I envy them to be honest,.I had a blast in the first few months and if I could feel like that for years,... DAM we need to envy thos players and theres alot of them.

Sickening.
why are all other mmorpgs not that great?
I luv WoW and so do 9 million other people!
Its not that WOW is so great its just everything else out there sucks
Sad but true
Yeah, I know you can't argue, but at least you could pay attention to the strong points of the game you "luv". There's 10 million of you.
No signature, I don't have a pen
If you are so smart then please feel free to create an intelligent MMO. I enjoyed my time in WoW but have moved on and would love a more complex game just like yourself, but in no way does the fact that I and others liked or have enjoyed the game bring itno question our intelligence.

I wrote an article on what Blizzard did right and did wrong with WOW. See it HERE
However, I agree with most of the discussion to this point
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
I didnt say any mmo'a aint got bugs. It wasnt ment like that. What I ment is that some people paint a highly unnaccurate picture of WoW, and that post was ment for them. Game still got problems, there is no need denying it. And sometimes the fixes to classes are totally unneccesary. They try to make everyone even in the pvp field, and that is bull. If you want that, go play some fps, not an mmo. In a class based game, some classes will always be better at specific jobs than other.

Grammar nazi's. This one is for you.
Top 10 Most Misused Words in MMO's
Polished is a good word
DAM we need to envy thos players and theres alot of them.
thats a few things I can think of anyway.
