Star Wars Galaxies had the opposite problem as The Sims Online. Its complexity demanded so much of gamers, and its worthwhile accomplishments were so time-consuming, only the most super-dedicated players and lovers of the grind could hope to achieve the highest honor in the game: Jedi status.
Eventually, Sony Online got tired of hemorrhaging money and swung SW:G in the other direction, making "Jedi" a level zero character class, meaning everyone who earned Jedi status legitimately had all but wasted those many, many hours of grinding. The existence of thousands of Jedis (because what other class would you pick?) messes with the Star Wars Universe's mythology almost as much as the last three movies. Sony also gutted the game's complex crafting and abilities systems and generally nerfed the hell out of the experience, dumbing everything way down. All of this, of course, alienated the dwindling fanbase of the game even further. The backlash was strong, and current estimates of the game'smarket share hover around 1.4% compared to WoW's 52%.

so, from one extreme to another, assuming WoW's population is ten million, swg has somewhere between 140,000 and 270,000 subscribers. Considering the vets claim less than 10,000....it's an interesting differential.
EDIT -- crikey, people flip out because I used the Worldwide WoW number rather than North America...if the NA WoW use is 2.5 million, the range would be 35,000 to 67,000 based on the same basic algebra.

Sometimes these people don't know whether they're coming or going - best to ignore them
Account has been stolen, why would someone want to steal my account?
Again, I would like to know exactly how StationPass plays into those numbers.
I think the question is, shouldn't it be a Star Wars mmo with those numbers not some upstart.
I'm sorry, but anyone who has played SWG this year knows those numbers are crap. 250k active players is what this game had back when it was good. No way it is even 10% of that now, and no amount of wishing, spinning the numbers or PR is going to change that.
People wanting server merges is the #1 issue on the O site, and people are not doing that because there are plenty of people playing.
Sorry, I played the most recent vet trial on 3 different servers, including Bria, and the number of people I didn't see is the real story.
According to that you're wrong. Can you prove otherwise?

What is your estimate of PVP/PVE?According to that you're wrong. Can you prove otherwise?

I am generous saying 1/10. Look at the stats. Your game has dropped every week.
WoW doesn't have 10 million North American subscribers. That would make your calculations all wrong. The article references North American market shares. WoW has 2.5 million North American subscribers (www.blizzard.com/press/080122.shtml). That would put the total North American market share at 5 million, and Star Wars at 70,000 subscribers.
SWG barerly has 5k active subs, most subs come from station package sub.
Thank you.

You used the wrong info in your calculations. Although people saying less than 10,000 are off as well. You should come out with between 50-75k...but I am not sure how to calcualte station pass people or how they were fit into the 1.4%.

I'm going out on limb here but the person you are replying to works for SWG stratics and is using an alt account.

The empty servers are all the proof I need. And those reflect the way things ARE. Not the numbers, not estimated subs, but something anyone can go see for themselves anytime. The facts as they are now support the TRUTH. Not some fantasy of 140-270k subs.
I was playing when there were that many people, were you? I know what it looks like.
Maybe they are all just hiding.....

Now wait...
Didnt you know they are all in their own cities...
no wait..thats not right.
Oh..they are all locked in their houses grinding to Jedi...
no wait...thats not right either.
Oh, I've got it...they are all in their houses crafting!
wait..that isnt right either...
Maybe in a cantina listening to a band of players and resting up their battle fatigue and talking with friends..
wait...nevermind...I'm thinking of many years ago, in a galaxy far far away.

You're right -- I didn't read the article and just went off worldwide number -- divide everything by 4 and you get a better estimate ( ' ;

*rolls eyes* Heaven forbid I made a mistake -- divide everything by 4 and you'll have North American estimates. And no, this is neither an alt account nor someone working for SWG/Stratics or anything related to gaming.
"The PS3's launch failed epically due to a combination of weak launch titles, a way-too-high-price, a lack of dynamic exlcusive games, bad judgment about the market's desire for a top-of-the-line gaming machine, an inexplicable advertising campaign, and general arrogance on the part of Sony's executives."
Amazing , thats music in my ear..ah wonderfull...

SOE chooses not to publish their sub numbers for SWG specifically. You're aware of that. So, asking anyone to provide you with proof that you know doesn't exist comes across as some kind of manipulative mind game.
Your desire to support SOE and SWG is clear. I submit to you that playing mindgames with players is what has led SWG to experience a population decline to begin with. I think you're strategy here is self-defeating. Just an observation.

Simply put, some people appear to be clinging to the notion that misleading customers is still the best way to market their game.
It really isn't that difficult to calculate some numbers if you make a few assumptions.
There are 6 levels to a server population - very light, light, medium, heavy, very heavy, extremely heavy, and full. Once you make a guess at what a full server is divide that number by 6 to determine the population cap for each level (again assuming that it's in equal proprtions). So theorheically (only for demonstration) say the server cap is 1200. In 6 levels that would mean very light has a capacity of 200, light has a capacity of 400, medium is 600, and so on.
Now the second part of this is to make an assumption of the ratio of subscribers logged in at peak time - is it 1:2, 1:5, 1:10?
Does this make any sense, or am I missing something?
What is interesting is that SOE was not the first company to kill a game by dumbing it down. The star trek RTS game series StarFleet Command was killed due to a simular situation by activision.
Also the person who wrote that article on G4 is stupid. The plural form of Jedi is Jedi not Jedis.
I'd say they messed up. What they meant to say is they have only 1.4% of their subscribers left.
Oh, and only 2.5 million of WOW's subscribers are outside Asia. WOW is basically a Korean grindfest.
SWG never was a hit in Asia at all.
Actualy the Japanese did like it however when SOE started screwing up the game and everything they started a mass exodus and eventualy had to shut down the servers there so any remaining were forced to transfer to either US or EU servers.
Not to be racist, but if Asia doesn't like a grinder like SOE you know it has to be horrible.
SWG is like meeting the hottest chick of all time and then have her give you every STD in the book and then she dresses a monkey up like a baby sues for child support and the judge says yes
I heard theres 7 people playing this game now, heres the break down
3 on station pass
6 subs
5 trials
