"With Starwars Galaxies not living up to everyones expectations and a Startrek MMO currently in the works, its not surprising that the next big space MMO would come from Battlestar Galactica. The announcement comes just a few days before the 4th season of Battlestar Galactica kicks off this Friday. I don't know about you guys, but I love Battlestar Galactica. Without a doubt it's the best Scifi show ever and probably one of the best shows in any genre of all time.
But enough of the show, Auran Games, creaters of Fury and the Battlestar Galactica flight sim game, will be working on this new MMO which will be published by Sierra Online. The game is currently in the very very early stages of development, but I was able find some info about it by speaking to Greg Lane, CEO of Auran Games.
The game will take place during the first Cylon War,which makes sense considering it would be pretty hard to do a MMO where there's only 50,000 people and your stuck on a few dozen ships. Humans will be the only playable race, so if you were hoping to be a Cylon your out of luck. Thats basically all the info I was able to get, but I??ll be keeping in touch to provide updates."
I'm not sure what I think of this. I know this is the last season of the show, and I also know their making a spinoff thats going to be in the same period that said MMO is going to be in. I don't know how good this'll be, especially with the creaters being Auran Games. I guess I'll hope for the best but expect the worse?

Since it's based in the new Shows "universe" I say Who gives a damn?
I OWN the BSG TOS First Movie on Laserdisc, I spent money helping the petition drives to bring back BSG... I HATE the "new" Bsg with a passion.
So I hope it never happens.

This prob doesnt' belong in the WAR forum heh.. but a bsg mmo.. I am not so sure about that.. as far as the game world would be, it would be pretty generic with little tie in to the show, since as it says.. its not about the 40k odd people running away, its about everyday whatever.. sounds like a recipe for a generic scifi based typical mmo.. They would have to make it very very good to hook people who aren't battlestar fans, and even then, since it's not the interesting battlestar story, as a fan, I dont see that much appeal to the backstory to make me play this over your other generic mmos
I think I called that one a few days ago... don't know when it was posted though.
Interesting.
Well that sucks ! I want to be a bad guy and kill the Humans !
I like the battlestar IP but ugh, this sounds like it might end up as another goody-two-shoes "you are the hope of mankind, now go kill 12 wolves and I shall give you xp." type of game. Wait and see I guess.
It's the same morons who made Fury in all it's non-glory. No thanks, I'll pass.
Hmmmm....though I don't mind the new BSG, I don't think there's enough foundation for a good MMO. Whilst the society is too much like present day real life, any possible "combat" aspect will probably turn out to be nothing more than very badly done clone of Tabula Rasa. Possibly with a badly done Tie Fighter / SWG JTL style space battles.
Move along.....nothing to see here....

QFT. Their hyping of Fury with gimmicky sales tactics left a real bad taste in people's mouth, including mine. Auran is a rogue development house, at best.
another crappy mo to be based on a movie franchise
This would be kinda cool...especially if at some point down the line..random .players discover they are prototype cylon models..and are confronted with some kind of decision/dilemma because of it....perfect time to introduce limited playability for the "bad" side...but alas...although i love the new BSG...I dont think an mmo is sustainable..besides..if i can't play a Daggit..then screw it.
..or TV franchise....It's really a good way to limit research time..for lore, etc. It just hasn't been done too well yet. I mean ...I dont have to point out IP's like LOTRO(its okay)...and SWG(shabby)... Blizzard(in some form) always handled the Warcraft shite...so that is the main reason it was done well(IMO)...We'll just have to see about WAR and AoC..MatrixOnline is a joke(again IMO) and Firefly...even above Star Trek...to me...has the most potential for a great licensed game IP...but seriously...we couldnt even keep the show on the air...and Serenity sales weren't spectacular...so the chances of an mmo seeing the light of day is slim to none.

Agreed, even SWG pre-NGE was hollow to a degree.
However you've missed one. Stargate Worlds. And it will be interesting if a company who's creation was SOLELY based on the development of an MMO can pull it off successfully. Personally, SGW sounds like a multi-faction version of Tabula Rasa's combat system.

Quite true...I never followed Stargate franchise..seen the movie and several episodes of both shows...but you are quite right..it seems to be an excellent premise for an mmo with endless expansion/update possibility...if done well.

I think you mean "kill 12 Cylons".
Though I agree with you. This seems like crap, though I will reserve my judgement until we get more info about the game. However, if it is made by the same people who created Fury, it will probably be crap anyway.
As much as I adore BSG, it's not going to make a great MMO. At least a conventional one. If it had to remain a MMO, I'd prefer it to be more along the lines of GW. Let the Battlestars be hubs, and you launch with your 'squadron/party/group' .
But, IMO, it'd make a much, much better single player RPG/FPS/Flight sim.
Even though the idea of an infinite universe with planets to visit may seem like a good prospect for expansions, it still doesn't detract from the possibility that SGW, just like BSG, can bomb due to the main game being so dreary. However, I digress.......
MMO devs are slowly realising that you can no longer use dev names like "McQuaid" or "Garriott" in order to automatically guarantee that an MMO is going to be a massive success. Likewise, just because your MMO has an official stamp of approval from an IP owner, it doesn't automatically guarantee a sure-fire winner that is far beyond all others.
MMO devs can no longer hide behind poor graphics or poor gameplay with the excuse of "its a persistent world that is constantly updated" and promises that it will be fixed soom (tm). The market demands higher and higher levels of quality in every aspect of an MMO (for right or wrong reasons).
Subscribers no longer feel loyalty to an MMO. They vote with their wallets and the "Cancel Subscription" buttons.
Unfortunately, this means that right now the two-bit MMO dev houses can't compete with the already established "big boys" of the MMO world due to the enormous financial costs involved in getting their companies first MMO off the ground. We've seen this all too recently, small firms are either swallowed up or go under due to the investors banging on the door for their portion of the profits even before launch day arrives. Then, if there's any chance that it can be used to claw a small percentage from a competitors subscription numbers, a larger company will buy the rights to the game, keeping it mediocre with no intention of throwing money at it ............cue.....SOE: a company who's made MMO subscription scavenging into a successful artform.
Given the size of Aurans portfolio and the fact that this would be their first MMO, it wouldn't surprise me if this happened.

Im up for any NON-Fantasy MMO at this point. ONe genre controling 80% of all games...just too much
As for BSG itself, Yea, I think it has potential..however if this is just getting off the ground, I wager we will see STO a lot sooner than BSGO.
As for SWG not living up to its expectations...there are a lot of players who would disagree with you. Pre0CU, Pre-NGE the game had a significant and loyal (almost fanatical) following ...I wager at that time they believe it lived up to its expectations.

Old BSG is tripe and anyone who says its better than the new series needs a brain scan.
i don't see how they could make this into a MMO without lots of problems....
Even though i kinda liked both the old and new BSG, i can't help but think, there isn't enough meat on this to actually make something worthwhile, though the thought of playing in the BSG universe is interesting.
But only as a human? whoa, how the hell can they manage to make it into a mmo? i could see a singleplayer version like Freelancer of this but not MMO, even then Freelancer had more mmo potential... i mean there weren't just one battleship/fleet there lol.
"you have just obtained a level"
"you are now the local pokerplayer in the fragging black market"
I guess as level one you would be working in the industrial ships or cleaning the toilets haha.... Oh dear....

I OWN the original series in double DVDs! The special edtion with the head of a Cylon! So you can say im a hardcore fan of the original series. But the new BSG...its simply amazing! The best sci fi serie ever. You need to open your eyes and step out of the 80s.

You're probably some 15yr old who wasn't around during the time period the original came out in. It will be the same for this current BSG in 20years. The kids of that generation will think the SAME ignorant way. I'm glad your IQ isn't any higher than you "claim" MrVicchio's is.

Making it a multiplayer flight sim with RPG elements utilizing instanced battlegrounds would work.

Actually I grew up on the reruns on USA. Its was excellent when I was seven. At 28, I enjoy the intelligence and subtilties of the new show. It hasn't been called one of the best shows on TV for three years running for no reason. I watched the original again a few years ago to reminisce and I could literaly feel my brain cells die. If people in 20 years find new Galactica to be trash, I hate to see what they think of the original. They'll probably be wiping thier asses with it.
I watch the series... not sure if I would play a game though
