I guess this would tie in with the idea that the PvP event is a stress test to see how the servers handle the chaos of 10k before opening it to 50k. (10k because you damn well know you wont get all 15k players on at the same time.. will be lucky to get half that and some of the old beta testers)
It seems fairly strange to me that they are waiting so long to begin stress testing. We're just a little over a month away from launch, what if they find out the entire infrastructure of their servers can't handle the appropriate player level comfortably? Do you delay at the last second or push a bogged down game to market? Again, this is a what if, not a flame.
I am sure you will find that in beta testing they have asked players to be online at certain times,I.e
"We want to test the servers can everyone try to be online sat the 10th and help crash the server"
This is pretty normal in beta testing(or at least the games I have tested)so dont think they are leaving it to the last minute to test a server,They already have a good idea and just want to make sure the launch(if it releases on time)will 100% handle it.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
There's a thread in here(titled- What Could This be?) that links a page that says 'Registration May 2nd'.
Earlier predictions based on a Funcom interview vid., that showed a whiteboard with May 1st as the OB date, through IGN.
So, it seems we'll see some type of OB around the first week of May but I wonder if we have to pay 5$ for the download, like we do for pre-order 3day early launch clients.

I wouldn't worry, most stress testing in previous MMOs usually doesn't occur until 3-4 weeks before release, even closer than that in a lot of cases.
