It seems to me a game based on the Conan world would seem more fitted to have no Stealth, then to have stealth, especially since everyone can use it.
Idk its just something about going onto a battlefield with a bunch of battle hardened warriors, and all of a sudden they all go stealth.
Anyone know what I mean or am I alone with thinking Stealth is odd for a game like this.

You and your guild is defending your keep. It's 30 or so minutes before the expected attack commences so everyone is nervous. You look outside but you see noone except some non guilded people running around, curious themselves about the upcoming siege.
How can this be? Where is the arch-enemy guild that threatened with a full out attack earlier this week?
You order your rangers to run out and scout the whole territory for hostiles. The one that went south reported being attacked and killed by assassins. He couldn't tell however if they were part of a bigger force or just lurkers. You decide to send a team with a couple soldiers and a healer to investigate further.
It's almost time ...
Will you manage to hold the keep this week?
The game has no stealth as in invissible. It has a skillable ability to move unrecognized, but never at a 100% chance. If a full plate tank runs over rocky ground there will be a *KLONK*KLONK*KLONK* and the mobs will hear him. I bet Conan sneaked a lot.
It is basically impossible to be invissible on a battlefield. Your crowd is in sunlight and the enemies have you within their cone of view. They might miss the ranger or assassin in the shadow of a tree, but they will see the most part of your force.
While I do not think stealth is needed or even wise to put into modern MMORPGs, it most certainly fits into the Conan background fiction.
Conan was a part time theif who ALSO kicked people's asses.
Is AO stealth vs perception related to proximity between the people involved? I don't remember this bit.
Rogue classes will have some openers from stealth, but the normal combat will be done with everyone visible. It would be too unbalanced to do it in any other way. Apart from that, rogue classes will have some more interesting benefits from stealth as opposed to the rest.
It will be probably similar to PvE where you have to avoid the cone of view. Light and sound plays a role, but the highest priority is on the cone of view.
Having played DAOC for 3 years I'd say being able to stealth in PvP is money. Even the crappiest stealth - when you are fighting its hard enough to keep focused on every spell/arrow/dude wearing a big helmet screaming I AM THE JUGGERNAUT B**** !!! that a player blended into background gets a real advantage of not getting insta-ganked and perhaps getting that first crit off on an unsuspecting target.
On another hand imagine being a healer in the middle of a keep defense - you are the prime target. Being able to fade into background even half-assedly (real word ?) will give you a chance to regen.
The specialized assassin classes are more effective at it but they are also paper thin, suck butt, miss, dont do enough dmg if the crits dont stack and did I mention they suck butt ?
Cliff Notes: PvP + Stealth for all = SEX
FUNCOM - putting the FUN in disFUNctional !

Azdel's approach ... dream zone hehe (yes, I'm a bit drunk atm, sorry to say)
Stealth is the best thing since sliced bread!
Don't confuse a players ability, with a class being Over Powered.

I hope stealth isn't as lame as it is in AO, It's been awhile, but I don't remember stealth being very effective - even with the skill maxed.
It simply adds one more level of strategy to the game, only rogues will be the best at it so I see no problem with it.
Believe me, everyone who plays video games is waiting for this wonderful AI that gets hyped before the release of every game...
We just don't expect it to actually happen anytime soon. Developers have been talking about this magical AI prior to every release for a long time now, but it all turns out to be methodical and average in every game.
While I'd love to see the AI advancements Funcom has boasted, I don't expect to see a whole lot of improvement in their AI over any other MMO, to be honest
