You should put a windows XP installation CD in your Optical Drive and turn off your computer then back on.

Lol j/k  What edition do you have?  There is a difference between the administration priveledges between the versions.  Here is a guide.

You should not have to turn of any backround operations for you gaming.

If you have to, you should either considering disabling those backrounds operations completely, or switching to another operating system.

But if you really want to, messenger or other chat programs, possible game or software launcher programs (like Steam, or some office program that preloads upon computer startup) are good programs to start from.

After that, turning off your antivirus guard may give a good performance boost. As long as you make sure that you won't turn off your firewall you should be able to do it relatively safely while running only the game (if you run your web browser then you absolutely must have your antivirus kept on).

I don't know what processes from Vista itself you could turn off, but my advice is to turn off none. Those extra backround processes should be either necessary or then they should use only insignificant amount of resources if your OS is properly designed.

When you're ready and feeling a bit adventurous, try to tweak off the unnecessary services. More deets here and bookmark the page. Look around and there's also specific sections on Win XP etc. The "Safe" column in the tables pretty much is, so does the "Tweaked" but I'll advise sticking to the former should you're reluctant to experiment with reboots and such. That dude knows his shit and I've trusted his guides for years now..
