Windows Vista: Making sure everything supports it before purchasing...

Zaxx99Zaxx99 Member Posts: 1,761

Okay.. I am thinking about buying this OEM version of the 64 bit version of Windows Vista.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116204

But what do I need to check to make sure that it says "Vista certified".

So far, only my motherboard actually states "Windows Certified" on the specs on newegg. My ram and my Power Supply don't state such. I'm assuming those parts don't matter.

May seem like a dumb question to ask, but I want to make sure everything works with no compatibility problems once I get it all together..

Thanks!

With a new build and new hardware you wont get any compatibility problems.  The only problems that you are likely to have are 1) some older games will not run on vista 2) display drivers are not exactly up to speed yet so in some games you may find that the driver crashes, you will get a message like display driver stopped responding or the computer will just freeze.  Note that this is not with all games by any means, just those that could have done with better coding.

Vista also uses a lot more resources than XP so if you have less than 2Gb of ram I would think twice about getting it at all, with 2 - 4 gig you will be ok.

Just look up your hardware and make sure you have drivers available for your hardware.  As long as there is you should be fine.  64bit has driver issues with some hardware so it's important to make sure there are 64bit versions.  The hardware requirements are so exagerated it's unbelieveable.  one gig is plenty for normal use and 2 gig is plenty if you are a gamer.

Why "upgrade" to vista in the first place?  Any pressing need for it?  64 bit too?
