Questions to MMORPG veterans

Hi,

I want to get a MMORPG but I don't really have time to download 5 trial versions before making my choice. Which game would you MMORPG fans advise me knowing that:

- My computer is rather old: PIII 1.6GHz, 64M video card (great internet connection though)

- I have a terrile job and can't spend my nights and week-ends on "grinding" my character

- I'd rather not start a game where I am a 0 level character while everyone else is level 50 (perhaps a newer game then, or some kind of game where it is possible to access a server for rookies only ?)

- Any theme is fine (sci-fi, fantasy, medieval)

- I used to play a LOT to regular RPGs and won't be discouraged by a complex RPG game/interface

- I want to find it quickly because I'll be able to enjoy it much more this summer (workwise)

Any thoughts ? Thanks

i play Ultima Online, i also have a prety shitty work schedule i work nights 10-7am and am off wednesdays and thursdays, so i dont have much time to play either but i already have good chars on uo cuz ive been playin for about 6 years hehe, but i dunno i would recoomend to you either Ultima Online, or Anarchy Online if youve never played them, no matter what game you join youll be behind alot of people anyways but there will always be people starting out at that level with you to so dont let something like that hold you back

Right now, not many MMO's fall into the "casual" gamer friendly category. WoW is trying to fix this with there rest system, but you seem to be in a hurry to play one. Really, cant think of one. Most MMO's out right now have been out for awhile. My comp is an AMD athlon 1.7ghz but im also running 768MB ram and a ge-force fx 5700 ultra 128mb. I suggest getting a new vid card if you plan on playing any of the newer mmo's. They arent to expensive. Mine was about $100 and it runs my games perfectly.

With this criteria alone you wont find an MMO. Your gunna be starting at lvl 0 where everyone else is high. SWG may be the only thing i can think of since its not lvl based but I wouldnt recommend that game to anyone.

Ive played a LOT of MMO's.. UO, DAOC, SB, CoH, SWG, Runescape

My favorite of those would be DAOC, but there is a Level Gring, and even moreso now that artifacts are involved. It can get very boring, and is definately not for the casual gamer. CoH is good for the casual gamer, but the level grind sucks there as well, and if you dont have sufficient RAM/Vid Card youw ill have problems. I ran it on a P4 1.4, 256mb ram, GeForce MMX 64mb Vid card and I had SOME problems during peak times, not too much to make it unbearable, but it was noticable. CoH doenst have much content wise, and unless you like doing the SAME thing over and over, its not for you. All you can do in that game is kill bagduys to level or do missions (which almost every mission is the same: go into X place and kill X guys). Very boring after a while. Plus, at later levels is very hard to level w/o a group.. I wouldnt recommend this because after level 25ish, you will spend most of your time finding a group. Your best bet would be to wait for WoW (which i am doing).

All of the MMO's out there are going downhill. A good thing to do would be to read the different Vault boards, they host boards for all the MMO's pretty much, and you can read all the complaints there. http://vault.ign.com

All games have a grind, you will never here somone say X mmorpg doesnt have a grind. I played UO, EQ, AO, DAOC, AC2, CoH, L2, PS, SWG, and FFXI. They are all good games, but it all depends on what you like. I have been reccomending EQ to people lately because of its great tutorial that it has now. There are some like AO that your comp can handle and you can download it for free.

I can't bring myself to recommend any current mmorpg's. If you have a little patience I know guild war's will be non-grind friendly. It really depends on what kind of mmorpg you are looking for, one with alot of content will have a huge grind ala EQ, if you want PVP (player vs player) you could wait for guild wars where everyone is the same level, you kill for loot and spells/skills.  From what I have read EQII and WoW will have large grinds. image but then again, thats a good thing if you are expecting to play a game for years. You would want the long hard grind. I mean the last thing I would want from a game that I pay to play for years, would be to see someone every 2 minutes that looked exactly like me, from head to toe. There needs to be a place for armor's/weapons that are extremely hard to get. There is nothing like the feeling of walking through a noob town in your 5 month grinded out suit of armor, and your staff that has only dropped five times in 2 years on your server.
