Is there a global cooldown for launching attacks/abilities or can you fire them off in real time? No global cooldown would be something like DDO, but DDO doesn't have a lot of abilities to chain. WoW's combat is boring because you literally have to wait 1.7 seconds to make your next move after most attacks/casts. So basically auto-attack + gcd + no collision = WoW. So, then what equal's AoC?
there is a delay on each swing, you have 3 choices of swing. Each time you swing its the same anim over and over again. abilities have a cool down just like WoW. Its like the combat model they put in with the hotbar doesn't allow for the button pushing swinging to have any impact. really man its pretty lame, the only people who will defend this game are those who've been content with the crappy game mechanics in MMO's over the past 5-6 years, or fanboi's. I really wanted to like AoC, but the developers lied. This is not the game that was promised. It feels like a single player game, with typical MMO combat, and a built in match making window for PvP. There really isn't much new here.
If you speak of the storyline, Conan kills WoW's lore.
If you speak of gameplay mechanics, Conan, (from what I understand)is new and refreshing. WoW on the otherhand...
That was a reply to Greymann by the way.
Not to be argumentative but WoW's lore and storyline are far more well known than Conan's. If anyone thinks about Conan anymore at all, the first thing they think of is ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER and the horrible movies. WoW launched on the heels of 3 extremely popular stand alone RTS games with a very well developed lore and storyline that people were eager to become a part of and this was a very significant factor in its success. Which is superior is a matter of opinion...personally I remember very fondly the books by Howard, Carter, L. Sprague de Camp, and others and am quite hopeful AoC will at least try and capture the flavor of the world they created.
Should AoC have attempted some sort of stand alone launch prior to the launch of the MMO?
Conan a WoW clone... ?? Lets see, Conan was written in 1932. WoW was regurgitated in.....
Oh here we go with this stupid crap. We're talking about VIDEO GAMES, VIDEO GAMES, VIDEO GAMES! Not books. This isn't a fantasy book forum. Get it?
Haha... I'm very aware of that. I just like getting under the skin of you forumwowfanboi trolls, and yes I mean you greymann... I read half your posts and they are very anti-AoC and very pro WoW.
...and I'm just one of those annoying people that enjoys arguing
All the naysayers can keep on naysaying because funcom did one hell of a job with age of conan. Honestly they did such a good job I dont think I will ever be able to play a Point and click mmorpg the same way ever again.
Yeah.. I'm not in the beta <cry> but, from everything I've read from people that have been playing this weekend and posted has for the most part looked very positive.
Well, I played it, and of course there are similarities between AOC and WOW, and most other pve based, fantasy role playing games past, present and future. At no point did i say to myself, hey, this feels like WOW. OK, I lied, when i did the capture the flag matches I did get deja vu, however many games have this match type, so I guess it too is part of the genre.
Of course, its not a sandbox type, FFA PVP game, Funcom never intended it to be (you might argue they wanted a commercially successful game) however in just my brief trial I saw enough of a variation in the implementation of familiar features to satisfy me.
Seems like a pretty good game so far, looking forward to seeing some more.
Now, back to OP's original post, which had nothing to do with the title really, not sure why people bash games so hard, probably for same reason people root for or against professional sports teams with such a passion. Answer, no damn reason at all, not like they have a vested interest in either, but for some reason they need to be passionate about their support.

Yeah.. they can be passionate about their game in their own forums.
They come over here and spew negativity because they are obviously bored with the game they like and have nothing better to do.
Yup great PR work but I am worried about the real game. Not the instanced capture the flag or starter areas.
Surely ur greatest worries were gameplay and real time combat? these make/brake a game and since most reviewers seem to find it smooth and fun it's a good indicator taht FC are doing something right. If this is well done I see no reason why other less important (very important nonetheless) issues are gona fail. Few bugs, glitches here and there will get fixed eventually if not at launch then a couple of months after launch, no big deal.
Does WoW not have autoattack with an active combat system? ummm, no
Does WoW have an active sheild based system during combat? ummm, no
Does WoW have the whole concept of combos? Ummm, again no
Does WoW have graphics that looks at least somewhat realistic? again, no
Does WoW have the ability for a tank type to be productive if they aren't tanking? Are you kidding me?
Does WoW have the ability to siege and control areas of the game (keeps and battlekeeps)? no
Does WoW have the ability for crafters to actually be worth a damn? Again, are you kidding me?
Does WoW have the ability for a guild to build their own city and then be forced to defend it from NPCs? ...
Need I really say more?
About the only similiarity I saw in the two games was the fact they both have PvP games, used hotbars and had PvP games...
I also note that you claim that EQ2 became more popular as they became more WoW like, I beg to differ, it became LESS popular with the players as it did that to the point where a great many quit not long after the last expansion (me included). Quite frankly, EQ2 is now just as much of 'the suck' as WoW is (and yes, I've played both)

OMG, I loved EQ2 when it first came out! The crafting was a challenge.. the spawns would tear you up in an instance. Dying was a real pain.. the game was challenging and fun.
I propose that in AoC we hold public executions to whiners that want to dumb the game down.
I don't know why people like to jump on new games calling them clones of something else. All of these games steal ideas from each other that's nothing new. Hell most people got Vanguard because it was supposed to be like EQ1.
As soon as some people see a quest that says go here and kill that they jump off with the omg this is just like every other MMO. If your expecting the greatest thing since sliced bread then you may not want to play this cause will be disappointed. It looks like its new enough to be interesting but it's not some revolutionary stoke of genius like they advertised it to be. Then again what ever is as good as advertised anymore especially in the MMO world.

Give it a UI and levels and people will call it a WoW clone.

The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"
Ive being seeing that kind of comment alot on the forums, aparently the ones who are saying that are either WoW kiddies or WAR fanboys and they arent even in any beta.Soo im wandering why people have to go out of their way to give their oppinion on something they havent even seen/tryed/heard of. P.S AoC is the only fantasy MMOG that actualy kept me playing and did not cause intense boredom after 2 hours of playing.
I think you just have to laugh off anyone that says <insert game here> = WoW clone.
The fact is, this is a genre of games and all of these people are tired of it. Instead of walking away though, they moan and complain about everything. It's like complaining every FPS is a DOOM clone. It wasn't the first but it was successful and, funnily enough, there have been many fps's since then that aren't all that different -- get gun, shoot enemy -- yet also highly successful and fun. And this isn't limited to games. Books, movies, tv, stories have genres. Grey's Anatomy is a television-based medical drama serial which happens to be an ER clone which is a St. Elsewhere clone...etc. Grey's Anatomy stands on its own though just as House M.D. does but with its own little tweaks. Some like it, some don't but in other media when people don't like something, usually they just ignore it and walk away (except maybe those heroes vs lost fans ; ' ).
Anyway, It's all a formula that gets tweaked for each new enterprise but somehow the hardcore mmo gaming people have conjured up this vision of a new mmo that is amazingly "innovative" and that they're entitled to it (although they aren't fronting the money to develop it!) Anything that doesn't fit that vision (which, by the way, everyone seems to have a slightly different one too) is a disappointment and must be hated. It seems like a waste of energy on their part -- just let people enjoy what they want too -- but these "visionaries" have a need to express themselves, whether it is for attention or just to get a rise out of others. In either case, it's really best to ignore them or point them to a VC company that could bankroll their brilliant idea ( ' :
