Quick History Recap of AO

RagalornRagalorn Member Posts: 75

Greetings all, I was in beta test for AO a long time ago, I was also there during its horrible launch.

I left this game right after they nerfed the pistol for the soldier and never gave us our ability points back, I think many soldiers were like me and chose the pistol as it was the best weapon, only to have it nerfed. I was level 78 and had no intention of re-starting.

Before launch Funcom had said AO was going to be a game in which you could solo or group to advance, we quickly found solo was a pipe dream and was not true. After the bad launch, solo not possible on original AO (i heard this is different with SL), still crashing 6 months in, and then the pistol fiasco I called it quits.

I have considered giving this another go, but wanted a breakdown of all major events since then. Not really in game story related material but I am looking for gameplay issues, gripes, concerns and what you like.

I suggest you simply try it out with a 7-day account, or if you got a friend that's still active, with one of the free 1-month accounts that were handed out to everyone on the 3rd anniversary a little while back.

Although, if you gave up after the pistol nerf, I suspect you will be disappointed again - things do change in this game, and you have to learn to cope with that fact. There are a limited number of ip resetpoints though that can be used to reset a skill you no longer need. I soloed the game from launch and on for 3 years with a fixer (who were so gimpy they hardly ever got into teams during the first nine or so months), and I don't agree with you at all that it was impossible. Sure it was hard, but that's the challenge.

As for what's changed ... well the size of the game is nearly doubled, there are *a lot* more quests, economy has inflated, tradeskill system now works, there are many more static dungeons, new levels, perks ... simply too much stuff to tell you about here. I still think the game is great, but I thought that when you left too :) Just give it another shot!

I personally used to play the game at launch myself and always loved it because of the atmosphere, and community, etc. The gaming was also great fun but that may just have been because it was the first MMOG I played. Never the less I don't think it's quite as fun anymore, about a year into it's life there just seemed to be too many super high level characters around and the few low levels that were around were alts, and that part of the community (which was the vast majority) felt quite nerdish in my opinion the way they interacted, and the community is so important I think.. The new expansions don't do much for me, there's alien invasion coming out which looks like a step up but if the community is still as bad as it was when I left it I don't think it's worth going back to.

I guess your best bet is to try the trial and see for yourself =)

I love rain, the color gray, and small apartments.
I hate CS, the term n00b and this thing --> ^^
    But that's just me.

Alternatively you can probably reactivate your old account (it will cost you a months fee), and play your soldier again. AO never deleted any accounts, so I assume he is still there. And you will now have some reset points that you can use to reset the pistol skill and get your IP back.

    Hmm that is interesting.

What do you mean by reset points?? I can get back those wasted pistol/dual wield points?

I wonder why they didnt give us this option right away and waited......odd.

Thanks for the reply's, truthfully I didnt like the community either (coming from EQ which had a very good one) it was tough for me to adjust.

Plus the constant crashes, unable to zone into missions, then when you did manage to get in the mission the little triangle that was your objective was bugged so you could not pick it up.

I did very much enjoy the graphics and the outstanding camera control (best I have played yet) and there was alot of potential.......I will try and see if my soldier is still there and if I can reset points.

The reset system works like this:

For every "title level" between lvl 15 and 190, which are lvl 15,50,100,150 and 190, You will get reset points.

The points are cumulative, so you can save them if you want. If you dont use any you should have over 20 points at high level.

A reset point can be used to reset ANY skill entirely, meaning you get ALL the IP you invested in that skill. The only "drawback" to resetting is that you have to unequip all the equipment you have. This is to prevent people from OE'ing.

As to pistols, if your soldier has some old school weapons like the Freedom Arms pistols, and maybe a low light targeting scope, you can earn alot of money since they are still highly in demand.

That was a long time ago. I have to say having been a part of AO for 3 years now I've seen the whole buffet of changes, nerfs and patches they've introduced into the game.
And despite some needed corrections I would have to say that overall AO is one of the best MMOs out there. For the amount of content it has and the customer service that has been very available to it's players I don't think you can really beat it.
I would have to say it's definetly worth comming back for another look.
