Well for most things in a computer I often say "no matter", not so for motherboard, this is often overlooked and people go for cheap ones to save a buck and instead poor money into graphic cards for example. Aint gonne do you much unless you have a MB that can handle it.

And I say go ASUS, always ASUS. I have probably built in the area of 80-90 computers for assorted family members, friends, friends of friends and friends friends neighbour etc etc..

This is the part I always recomend buying brand, save in on anything but this...

That said, it kinda dpends on what you want in it, you can get one with sound/lan/graphic/ and so on. Go for LAN only or maybe LAN/sound, the integrated soundcard is often enough, but if you plan on putting in a SB or something I say try to get LAN only. You should be able to get a decent card for 200$. But again it also dpends on what kind of memory and what kind of CPU you intend to use.

So, to give good advice here I need more info.. :)

/edit or you intend to switch motherboard only, and keep the 1,8, and all other parts?

Interesting I was already looking at the ASUS-P4C800-E-Deluxe

Yes I will keep most of the same parts and will modify when need arises. Except the video card witch is built in to the one I have now.

I am using the p4c800 deluxe myself and I am very pleased, (not the E version).

Especially the overclocking abilties in it, I went a bit overboard recently and imagine my surprise when a female voice tells me, "rebooting dued to failed overclocking", hehe gone are the days when one got a 14 beeps long morse code to figure out what was wrong...

i have been doing a little research my self because i am in the market for a good new board also.  my friend does professional IT work at the police station here in town, and for every server that he has built, he has used the

    ABIT IC7 MAX3 INTEL 875P CHIPSET ULTRA ATA150 ATX FORM FACTOR 1xAGP(PRO/8X)/5xPCI/4xDDR W/SATA,RAID,LAN(Gb),1394,USB 2.0 & AUDIO (CPU TYPE:INTEL PENTIUM 4 - 533/800MHZ)

as you can see, this thing has everything that you need on it except video, so theres not that much of a need to go out and buy every a accessory for the thing, that is untill you grow out of what it has to offer.

where i have done all my business in the past is at a site called www.mwave.com .  and right at the moment, they are listing for $170.

i have to agree with the asus thing... i have been a big fan of asus for a long time.  the first 486 board that i had was an asus, and man did it scream compaired to everyhting else.  i am also currently useing an asus board that i have had since 2000, and yeah, its getting a little dated, but they were ahead of their time when they made what i have, so its still moveing right along.

the board that was mentioned was my second choice.  i have done some research on it, and found that it was very nice as well.  but because i have seen this abit board in use, and seen what it can do, i would recomend that.

good luck on finding your self a new toy to play with.

And yes, Abit to are very good, I have built a few with them, cause some people just will not listen.. hehe. Have always worked like a charm.

Also, and I will prolly get torched for this, but QDI aint all that bad either..
