HoX like CoV dominator?

markyturnipmarkyturnip Member UncommonPosts: 837

Sad to see my favorite class gain so much in popularity but people were always bound to see the light, I guess.

I have a question - it strikes me that turning into a demon has similarities to the CoV domination function for a Dominator.

ie a regular, but not that common, moment of superpower, which you can save up for tricky moments. Squishy melee... with cc. I came to really enjoy the gameplay.

Is this a fair comparison?

While I haven't played CoV, it doesn't sound like you are that far off.

I played the Herald a fair amount over the weekend.   At level 20 he has a 25 second demon transformation in which he does more damage, and gets boosts to his other stats.  The cooldown is about 2 minutes.   There are supposed to be feats (talents) later on that reduce the cooldown a little and increase the duration.

They wear cloth armor, and do not have a lot of HP and stamina.   The stamina is an issue because the melee combos and charge attack burn stam, and at level 20 melee is where the bulk of their damage comes from.   They are extremely squishy when they are not in demon form.  I have heard the higher level they get, they become a bit more involved in the magic and a little less in the melee, but not a lot of difference.

The herald at 20 has an insta cast point blank area effect root, which helps keep people in place for their combos to go off.  The herald combos are a bit slower then the other melee classes, but they are capable of doing a lot of damage.  They have a hellfire breath cone of fire that channels in front of them, but it wasn't too powerful at 20 from what I saw.  They have a 5 minute buff that reduces the damage they take on each hit to help offset their low armor rating.

Personally the class isn't for me, at least from what I saw at level 20.   One of my officers however spent a lot of time with it and was able to kill a lot of people.   It is an all or nothing type of class.   You do a lot of damage and you need to be in melee range, but you pop really easy.  It says on the website they get a fear at high levels which probably would help them a lot.

In FFA PvP servers I can see a possible problem with getting jumped and not being able to get the demon form off in time.  But in the context of the battleground mini-game where you see them coming, they did well.  I'd like to see the class get a little more stamina and a little less mana, but every class in the game seems pretty balanced from what I saw.

Not sure I fully understand this point... is it a good or bad thing that their combos go off when they are rooted? I do not fully understand the combo dynamic...

They do not fire while you are moving, but can you set them up so they do go off the moment you do stop moving?

    Thanks

I think you misunderstood what he meant.

A Herald of Xotli can stop OTHERS from moving, and thereby have a better chance of getting off their own combos since their target isn't able to move out of range.

As to whether or not a Xotli is like CoV's Dominator...not really.

At least during the PvP Weekend with its level 20 restriction, the Herald of Xotli was almost opposite in that there were a lot more melee abilities than there were ranged abilities.

The aforementioned stun/root thing didn't refresh frequent enough to make the Xotli seem like a "control" class.

The demon form though, its useable every now and then sorta like the Domination deal. 'cept its on a timer rather than having to build up through fighting towards it.

Really, CoH is too incredibly different to try and compare those two classes, or any two others. Fundamentally though, I'd say they're different due melee and range focuses, but no tellin' how Xotli's pan out later on.

OH, I see - thanks, very helpful

PS sigh.. I am missing my dominator now. Really one of the most fun classes I ever played - it was such an interesting combat style
