Blizzard VS BioWare Secret MMO Poll

DeaconXDeaconX Member UncommonPosts: 3,062

Right now we've got the heavyweight Blizzard working on a new secret MMORPG.  Newcommer is BioWare, set to challenge the MMORPG market - both are arguably among the FINEST developers around.  Blizzard obviously did a good job with World of Warcraft building a ridiculously large following, however, BioWare is not without a following of it's own.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic sold around 3mil easy and BioWare's Mass Effect has been a pretty big success as well.  They are quite possibly the finest 'role playing game' developers out there... so... the question here is:

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

Not really bothered by either one to be honest. Bioware have never made a game that I actually like, yeah the stories for their games are good but the actual gameplay is lack luster or mediocre.

Blizzard, I am not sure. I know what ever they make is going to be in games before it but just polished to a high standard.

I know what ever Blizzard makes will be good but unoriginal since it is what Blizzard does as a company they take games that have been done before but could be done a lot better and they perfect them so to speak.

Bioware are more likely to make a original game with a very good story line, but going on their previous games and a speech the lead designer made( basically he sounds a lot like he wants to make a WoW clone with a better story IE lord of the rings online) I have a hard time getting hyped over anything they are making.

Out of the two I would say I am more interested in Blizzards mmo, since they have basically cornered the PvE market with WoW I think what ever they are going to make is going to try to cater PvPers so they have a mmo that appeals to PvErs and one that appeals to PvPers.

finest my ass.. I can't remember when I've played a Bioware game last

However Bioware consistantly puts out quality games, regardless of the last time you remember playing one of their games they consitently put out some of the best RPG's on the market, KOTOR, KOTORII, Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire, Mass Effect....

Generally I know if the game has Biowares name on it (much like Ubisoft for FPS and simulation games) that chances are I will enjoy the game and not be blowing my cash.

    ...Sorry you're missing out? lol...

Last I played a Blizzard game was probably on Super Nintendo... I miss lost vikings...  Other than that, none of their really successful stuff has grabbed me.  Don't like RTS games, Diablo in my opinion was ridiculously overrated... the only thing it had were nice cutscenes... but that's just my opinion.

BTW HVYMETAL: KOTORII was Obsidian developed, RUSHED by LucasArts and had to have tonnes of content cut sadly.  But it wasn't BioWare.

KOTOR and Mass Effect are both GREAT games with solid gameplay and terrific stories.  They both sold a ton of boxes and has cult followings.

Mass Effect was a good testbed for Bioware and console games.  You can bet anything that the Bioware MMO will support PC and console gaming, which will mean a lot more potential subs.

People shouldn't underestimate this game by Bioware, EA spent nearly $1 Billion largely (they claim) because of the coming MMO from Bioware.

Definitely Bioware's game considering how high quality their previous games have had. I also suspect Blizzard won't make a u-turn and start making sandbox games; more likely is that Blizzard will release another farmfest.

Personally I would be more interested in what Bioware has to offer. Honestly I think it's obvious Blizzard is going to try and repeat the success they had with WoW, and really they would be stupid not to. So more than likely we won't get anything original or amazing, I just imagine WoW with better graphics. Bioware on the other hand being new into the MMO scene has a better chance of putting out something new and original, so it attracts my interest more. However, chances are I will play both games, as more than likely they will both be decent.

Blizzard will undoubtedly come up with something that sells an insane amount of copies, but I think that Bioware will be a force to be reckoned with.

Anyone know what the story with SOE is?  I want to see Everquest 3 or something.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

DeaconX , you know i am huge fan if Bioware ... yet I voted Blizzard...here is why...

Bioware games have gradualy been losing quality. From Baldurs Gate to Mass Effect. Some of them are even utterly bad - like Jade Empire. And ever since they transfered from infinity engine to aurora , the gameplay itself became worse and worse. Not bad , mind you. But not as good as it was in old days.

So verily prized game KOTOR is clunky and features questionable UI , and so does Mass Effect.

But Bioware are still masters of STORYTELLING...

So it means they will play out that strenght. Which means they will make so called"rollercoaster ride MMO"

something like LOTRO , with great but Fixed quests and storyline, static world, Massive online singleplayer game.

    So here we go

    Bioware

    1. Not good at combat design,UI

    2. Will do Story based game

    3. Owned by EA

Let see how is Blizzard team doing

Blizz puts 2 billion dollars in their pocket ,from WOW each 4 years. And this is just from subscriptions.

Blizz already did WOW , so in order not to compete with them selves , they will do "Something completely different"

Everyone else goal is beating WOW , Blizzard has no such goal.

Known to make games with superior gameplay and UI

    Blizzard

    1. Great gameplay , UI

    2. Will do something completely different

    3. Have a lot of their own money

    So there are the reasons....

Blizzard sold themselves to Vivendi a couple of years ago.

unless the bioware game is running a pre-cu system then it will fail. we know that it is a star wars game and we on the vet forum have made it clear that we wish for a pre-cu system in the next sw mmo. bioware will not do this cuz they will want to have it on the lamebox 360 as well.

blizzard will do something new but again nothing that people will really want it will sell tho due to blizzard making games with no bugs and coming out with a game when it is done.

Ah yes Blizzard, they are known for making things that are completely different

WoW was totally off the hook original, I started playing and I really was lost cause the child like simplicity and generic nature of the game blew me away

Seriously, the 2 great achievements to gaming from Blizzard are the modern rts and hack and slash rpg genres. That was over 10 years ago and they haven't really had an original thought since.

Blizzard have artistic freedom but as someone already mentioned they are owned by Vivendi.

Bioware really is another word for keepers of the rpg flame for me. I have loved most of their games, and thought others were at least decent. Of course it is easy to be critical of them since they themselves set the standards. All you have to do is look back on the last BIOware game you loved and compare.

I believe these two companies are polar opposites. If you wanted to compare the games to the movie business it would be a comparison between a huge blockbuster high budget epic, and a mid budget movie that actually makes you feel something more than just pumping adrenaline into your veins.

Blizzard mmo comes out, I know it will be playable from day 1, and very simple to get into.  Let's not forget before WoW came out they had years of online experience.

Bioware mmo comes out, I don't really know what to expect. I feel they are totally out of their element here.  I don't think it will be an average game though. It will either hit big or fail big, no in between.

Well Blizzard will continue to sell well and make pretty good games. Though making another MMO will compete with its own game unfortunately. I still expect them to do well but I don't expect anything innovative from them.

Bioware is simply just a great company. Each of their previous games have sold extremely well. I expect Bioware to make a great mmo no matter what genre it is. They know how to tell a story, they make their own ip and they do quality work.

Bioware will do a superbly good game , no doubt about it. But i have suspicion it will be not much unlike LOTRO from Turbine.

Instanced storyline , great quests , average gameplay, beautiful graphic , periodic content

All great , but all - so called Massive Multiplayer Online Single Player Rpg  MMOSPRPG.

Blizzard allready made MMOSPRPG , it is called WOW.

Now they can try doing online virtual world , living breathing, sandbox gameplay

    MMORPG

Blizzard actually came under corporate ownership over ten years ago, in 1996.  They've since changed hands about a half-dozen times.  Check the wikipedia page for Blizzard if you want a breakdown, as what I'd tell you would largely be the same thing.  I don't think it has ever actually affected the quality of their games.  Their new corporate overlords are always smart enough not to mess with a good thing.

  • HashbrickHashbrick Member RarePosts: 1,851

Tough topic, really it is. There is so many things that go hand-in-hand and out of place with each company.

First you have vivendi owning Blizzard, while not really it a scare it is a change on perspective.

Secondly you have EA owning Bioware, this news didn't set well for me when it was announced as EA is known for it's hurry up and release games and terrible trouble shooting support.

Now you have Blizzard already a step ahead at the plate with the most successful MMO to date based on subscribers numbers. People are saying they will release something that will compete their own title WoW. I really doubt this, I believe they will come up with something that will support both titles and still have millions of subscribers set on WoW. It may be something different so it doesn't compete with itself. If they compete with themselves they are only hurting themselves. Business is money and I'm sure Vivendi and the Blizzard team has an ace up their selves for what will work to grab the remaining people who didn't like WoW or left long ago.

Now you have Bioware known for the best story telling around. Their products are normally quite solid but the new move with EA is going to destroy that, it will release being buggy because this is how EA operates. Get it out the door and patch later. If it's star wars we may see an explosion of success, just because it is star wars and a new breath of air from what happened with SOE. Though some are going on that they will make something linear and not sandbox, I truly doubt it I'm sure they have done their research and figured out that the people who played SWG when it was in it's golden era loved the sandbox style of play.

My vote goes to Bioware, because if you can get an MMO to get you pulled in a deep story like KOTOR, Mass Effect, you have a whole new model of an MMO on your hand. It's all about choices/freedom and Bioware was always about that, give the player the option of becoming/doing something else.

    Neither.

What Bioware plans seems to be no MMO at all. Its no sandbox game, its no world simulation, you cant conquer territory.

What Blizzards plans, well I only need to look at what they've done before. Yeah I know there are fans of these games around, but I am not one of them, an I honestly dont understand how you can spend years farming for items in Diablo 2, or raid endlessly in WoW.

A lot of great posts so far and I'm actually a little surprised that BioWare is winning.  Though personally, I hope in the 'big picture' BioWare will win somehow when they actually launch this secret MMORPG.

On another note, EARTHRISE indeed looks to be VERY awesome and refreshing.

They are both correct statements, but having to choose I'll go with BioWare's option.  I loved KOTOR one and two!  I haven't played Mass Effect, but it looks great and I'm sure it is great.  I would probably play it if it weren't for the fact GTA4 hits shelves tomorrow lol.

Blizzard is the king of MMOs as of now.  I hate to admit it but WoW is the champion as of right now.  I'm hoping that AoC or WAR take that crown away from WoW though!

    I'd definately say Biowares game.

Off topic the company I'm watching is 38 studios.  Think R.A. Salvatore is one of the best storytellers around, not too crazy about Todd Mcfarlanes artwork but the company has pickup some key people since and I believe they have plenty of money backing them up.

If NWN2 is a considered high quality and an example of what to look for from their MMOG, then count me out.  I'm sorry, but NWN2 was all hype and the gameplay was pathetic.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

I have a question. Why do you make a new thread about what BioWare is working on every  single week?  There's no huge news, and there is little worth talking about. It's a game about nothing ATM.  All the speculation got old months ago.   Their game is not gonna set the world on fire like people think and you are setting yourself up for huge disappointment, but that's your business I guess. Either way the BW threads are getting old. Just my 2 cents.
