I'm planning on getting a new gaming rig, and I'm wondering if I'm doing too much, not enough, or what. Just looking for some feedback.

get 2 3870x2 instead. its cheaper and the performance are the same. +/- 10 fps

also get s separate 80gb hdd for your os. your games will load better and avoid hitching in game play...especially mmo

  • belladaunabelladauna Member Posts: 86

Coo, I'll look into that. Looking forward to more feedback. Always good to ask other gamers advice on this stuff.

It's good they offer the dual video card you suggested too. It's about 200 bucks cheaper. and 200 bucks is 200 bucks.

np...and by the way if you do go for the 3870x2 instead...you will need to change your mobo. you cant crossfire on an sli bored .
    i would recommend this
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131284

or you could go for the older x38 boards such as the p5e or the maximums formula

..*whistles* talk about top end there...* looks at her systems spec* im more middle of the road myself...but thats due to money....I like having a roof over my head lol

btw unless you play the couple of games that support it the Physics Card is a waste of money on a system like yours.

The only reason I'm getting a new one is cuz my other system is now a paperweight. I know I could just get a new part replace it, blah blah blah, but I don't want to go throught he hastle of getting something then finding out that's not it.

So I'm just going to get something new.

I gues I can always get the physics card later if  Mythic adds that capability later on.

I shopped around for the best prices and Digitalstormonline.com has just that, as well as parts. I went to Dell and the build is like 1200 bucks more for something that isn't even as good.

    1.  No need for physics card.

    2. Nvidia video cards are fine, just need to wait for better drivers.  If u want to save some money go with SLI 9800GTX .

ATI's new 4000 series graphics card comes out sometime in may. Cheaper than a GTX and upto Gddr5 memory. Sounding promising right now.

I would dump the physix card too. If your dead set on buying 2 GPU's just buy one now and get another later if you need it - that way you can save money and the price will drop and judge if you even need one when playing games. Makes sense to me :) I have one of those 9800Gx2's and was getting 70 fps in AoC beta pvp weekend at 1900x1200.

Even if they added physics into an MMO with your rig you still wouldn't need the Physics Card in all honesty their really just for handicapped systems and developers who think they need a special library to do physics rofl.

btw your rig's gonna rock when you do get it built..eventually i'll buy the parts n put my comp up on the table n revamp ... i'd rather have  anew HDTV first tho lol

For the HD I would go with the WD Raptor 150gb  16mb cache, 10,000 RPM, SATA

Just bought a Digital Storm rig and those guys rock.

Nice, all good feedback. At everyones advice I'll drop the physics card then. That'll save around 125 Bucks.

I didn't put a screen down cuz I already got a 23" LCD I play on. YUMMY!!! I got a friend who got it for me really cheap cuz he got an electronics install company.

I'll look up the other cards. Is there any other people who think the dual cards are a little excessive?

by the way what did you end up getting for your system, if you don't mind my asking that is?

Well, as you can see I like green by my avatar.  That picture is the farst incarnation of Belladauna.

1000w seems a bit much.  why not go for a 750 (or whatever is closest to 800).  the build seems pretty nice and i really doubt you will need dual 1g graphics cards for anygame...ever .

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

  • belladaunabelladauna Member Posts: 86

the onyl reason I was going with the 1000 W was because I think it's the minimum that will support the quad SLI cards, but maybe I mis interpreted something there.

Last chance for me to get advice cuz I'll be placing the order today. Anymore would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

p.s all the feedbacks been great, I have saved tons of money so far from what you guys have said. I appreciate everything.

So yeah, I am going to go with intel. Some people won't be happy about that decision, but after weighing advice I think the intels won overall. I just feel personally safer with the intell, Im used to it,'and change scares me despite the fact that if I was American I would vote for Obama.

Oh God I got political. Forget what I said there, and just focus on the computer.

I'm going to go with the killer connectivity card too. One person mentioned that and it seems like it'll improve overall gameplay in the mmo's.

I'm sticking with the 9800Gx2 single card now. and have gone and upgraded the fan so it's more silent hopefully.

I think those are all the current changes.

    Sound good?

Honestly 2 gx2 is a waste. atm your cpu even oc up to 3.6-.8 GHz will bottleneck you. and this si onyl if you playign on like a 2400x whatever rez.

    You may even pay SLOWER.

Id get just one 9800GTX or one gx2, if ya want you can due two 9800gtx and sli them , or just stick with one gx2 and in the future upgrade via another gx2. Still atm id 2x gx2 is pointless.

    http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3275&p=4

Check that bench its preoabbly the best for what cards give top preformence and etc.

Also id try to avoid a cerative sounds card, im sad to say this i have their top model atm even. But their driver for the last 2 year on xf-i are GOD awful.

PS get two harddrive and put them ina  raid zero if your willign to pay for 2 gx2 which will not help you or give you any boost to fps, a raid zero with 2 hard drives will make you load and seek faster. (look into two raptors at that, but really this is not needed id just do two normal hdds in raid 0).

CPUs good and should last you two.

Over clock it to liek 3.3-3.7 and woo fast speedz.

Oh one more thing don't buy a phisixs card, as your video card will soon do that (nvidia bought them out and soon will act just like a physics card as well as normal video card).

Yeah, you pretty much summed up all the advice everyones been giving. So I think I've made my decision on the specs and will be ordering the computer most likely tonight.

After it's been ordered I'll post the final specs to. So you can put your hand over your eyes and go "why?"

Unfortunately I'm going to go with another retailer. I'm going over to Alienware instead. THey are a little more expensive, but  a better warrany. and to me, warranty is important after my last computer fell apart 30 days after my previous one expired after 1 year and a half.

The only "Why?" I would have is "Why not call up your favorite retailer (newegg, etc) and not only geek it out better but do it for a grand less (give or take, it all depends on what you get) and be assured in that it won't fall apart in a month?". I won't ask that though as the answers for it are all pretty standard usually (Don't know how, don't want to, or the ever laughable "X computers are the best!").

What I will say instead is "Are you happy with your order? If so, then nevermind the rest and congratulations on your new system".
