I was a long time player in EQ and became obsessed with it rather quickly when I first started playing. After years of playing, I took a break then started looking around for the new fix. I played DAoC for a little over year and probably a dozen others for a much shorter time. With EQII coming out soon, I will definitely try it out. I think the original EQ gave players a lot of individuality in terms of appearance and weapons, etc. My concern is that once the the freshness of the game is gone.. what will EQII offer? I know SOE will cram tons of content/zones/mobs into it.. but will it have the same appeal as the orginal. I know that a lot of the original developers in Verant are no longer with SOE and that makes me worry that the original flavor is gone. Another thing I noticed, is a tendancy to dumb a lot of things down in order to attract more people. One of the hardest things in EQ at a low level was just getting around without dying. This made it quite an adventure and felt like quite an accomplishment once you did it. Then SOE added the PoK and now players don't even look around, the obsession is with leveling the fastest and finding the best gear. I'm not saying that getting good gear is important, after all it is the whole premise behind progression. I just think the original had an awesome feel to it... and that included the long travel times, finding your corpse, and not having maps/ compass to navigate by. I am hoping that EQII will dismiss some of the junk that had added to EQ and bring back the actual world, though I am a bit doubtful it is going to happen. Only time will tell. If anyone has some of the same feelings, I would love to hear your input...

I have to agree with you on a lot of issues.
As with so many things new it was a joy to visit a new place for the first time. Knowing you had worked hard to get there. You had to think seriously about whter you REALLY wanted to treck all the way to Quenos from Freeport.
Now people just take the PoP (and before that the lunar express) and new players don't get the same feel for the game.
Is is not my oppinion that all players should be forced to track through the mud their entire career so the Wizard and druid ports are great. But out with those easy jumps...
I think that maps are great but ONLY WHERE YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN. No copying from others or the like.
My biggest worry however is whether this game will cater to "casual" players. I felt like i lost out on way to much in EQ because there was no way i would get to the 60's.
Well, there is only one way to ind out
