New player needs advice on eve path (looking to fly a myrmidon)

SepelionSepelion Member Posts: 5

Hi all.

I've played the EVE tutorial/trial at least 3 or 4 times in the past, and I've decided I want to take a full-out try at it since AOC was a huge let down for me. I've always wanted to get in on the EVE PvP scene, but to be quite honest, I got intimidated in the past reading about the corp system and all that. Sounded a lot more complex than your basic MMO "oh there's two or three guilds on the server that rule pvp". BUT I WANT TO LEARN ALL THERE IS TO EVE PVP!

Firstly though, I've decided, after looking at just about all of the ships, I want to eventually work my way up to flying a Myrmidon effectively in PvP (gallente battlecruiser).

I know that will probably take a few months at least (4 or so I'm guessing?). With that said, I have a few questions to help ease my conscience to feeling less like a clueless noob in EVE:

1.)  Should I make any specific type of character with skills/attributes alloted to a certain area?

2.) What should I be focusing on training? Should I train any of the learning skills to 3 first, and which ones?

3.) What should be my ship progression up to the Myrmidon (which ships), and what skills should I wait to have before I actually try to fly it effectively?

4.) From what I've read, missions are the easiest source of income once you get up to level 4 missions. What kind of ship will I eventually need for these, as I'll obviously have to make doing level 4 missions one of my target goals as well to replace any Myrmidon's I'll lose in PvP.

5.) Obviously being inexperienced, I assume I should do the tutorial again with my new char, go join Eve University afterward, learn the game a bit more. How long should I wait before joining a real pvp corp?

And if I have anything wrong here or if it looks like I'm going in the wrong direction, just point it out. Learning isn't a smooth ride all the time, and I'm really trying to crack this intimidation I have of EVE PvP.

Thanks.

You pretty much answered your questions by writing the number 5 :)

Ive played a year or so and i still feel like a newbie from time to time, best times in games imo.

    1. You cant go TERRIBLY wrong on the attributes, but if you are going for piloting and pvp i would suggest to leave charisma as down as you can.

All the other attributes will come handy when training for support skills like capaitor recharge and skills to getting those hot lasers to actually fit in to your ship.

    2. I personally didnt train the learning skills first, i trained so i could fly a frigate "decently" and trained learning when i was offline and not playing.

Getting learning skills up wont save you alot time in the beginning, but if/when you feel like you are going to stay more than a month its time to start getting them up up up... :)

    3. Too long to write right now as im going to bed, but there actually IS people out there in the game who are willing to aswer even the most simpliest questions, even if the game universe and space is a cold hard place

    4. Missions can bring you some nice money yes, but imo missioning is the grinding part, some like it some hate it. I started doing level 3 missions in battlecruisers and level 4 on battleships, but levels 4`s are really hard ones if you arent prepared.... i wouldnt worry about those yet as you will learn alot about the game and what you want to do before you are there.

EVE takes time, can grind your nerves and destroy your mouse when your golden baby battleship is now a pile of twisted metal, but the success actually tastes so much better when you make it.

    Thanks man.

    One other question.

After some reading, I've seen a lot of eve players say creating Caldari Achura is the "cookie-cutter" (said most-efficient) character to creative if you're going strictly combat. (you can get their charisma real low and other attributes real high from the start). Would that not be a good idea though since  I plan on flying a Gallente ship (myrmidon)? Should I stick to creating a Gallente character?

I would say just go with Gallente, but I am Gall, so I could be biased. You will make up for those stats, but you will always have to live with being a caldari. Just remember, all the china farmers and carebears in empire are caldari, and if thats not reason enough to want to avoid the race, I dont know what is. Go Gallente or Minmatar, and you will have alot of PVP fun. Go Amarr, and you will have to deal with getting no love from Devs, EVER, but you will be better than everyone else, because your amarr, and they are rightious and whatnot. :)

Change is inevitable, except from vending machines.

They Myrm is a drone boat so focus on drone skills alot.  Also start off as a Gall char.  I cant remember the build but you can start off with alot of SP in drones which will help you get into a Myrm a bit faster.

    1. Caldari Achura is hands down most diverse build you could make. Only race that can go 3/9/9/9/9. Only one. They top charts for most any character creation tutorial. The trick is to keep CHA (charisma) down as low as possible. If you go Achura then you would have to train Gallente frig, Gallente Cruiser, etc. Make sure to get EVEMON (*MUST*) and EVEHQ

Next up is my build on my main- a Gallente Jin-Mei. Perception is the main stat you want but pretty much every stat is kinda needed at some point. EVEHQ will let ya do a "Goal Seek" and recommend optimal build. Make sure to click on the "Opt Training Time" column.

Ultimately you should probably pick a build you are most happy with

Must d//l EVEMon and EVEHQ. EVEMON #1 though

Try to get Scout Drone Ops to L5. Get Drone Interfacing to L4. Get Battlecruiser skill up when you get a myrm. Theres all sorts of skills that help though like CAP skills and such

    2. Yep eVEMon. Just click on Myrmidon as yer desired ship. Next, it will recommend optimal training path. But eventually you want everything in learning at L4. I mean every skill pretty much. Some go 5/4 (you'll see it will become clear)

I fly a Myrm myself as my main Battlecruiser.

    3. Hm, guess Imicus is good choice. Avoid that Tristain since that is a missile launcher boat and you dont have missile launchers on a Myrm. Imicus is good cause its a lil drone boat

    4. Well there are many ways to make ISK. But Agent missions is 'easiest' because its the most 'directed' type of activity and mining is the 'easiest' freeform activity. Belting can net you decent ISK. Thats pretty much what I do in 0.0 a lot in my myrm just belt the fields (ratting).

Eventually you want the Dominix I think since it a larger drone boat and highly recommended for L4s. Thats what I fly is Domi and Myrms. I keep a Jump clone in Empire and occasionally JC out there to run a mission to earn LPs. Keep in mind Myrm is much more forgiving then a Battleship to newbies because myrm quicker to align when you get in deep crap and smaller sig radius

    5. I joined a pvp corp at the outset and flew out to 0.0. but it was a hard life for my newbie Gallente. I pretty much just salvaged and mined haha. Nothing will stop ya. Most corps do require 3 mil and most say dont go out there til 5 mil. I've always been out in 0.0 and a bit in Empire...

Btw EVE University not a bad idea but I think right now their recruiting is closed. I'm always in eVEU channel and you should get in there regardless to ask around. Fly safe

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
if I were to kill a titan tomorrow and no CCP employees showed up to say grats I would petition it.
Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro
    if hp < 30 then CastSpell("heal") SpellTargetUnit("player") else CastSpell("smite") end
