I just did two trials for LOTRO and COV.
I hated both but like the initial fighting.
I will admit to be being a SWG player in beta and launch and played for about a year.
Do not think I'm a casual player.
I actively employed 20-26 real players each cycle to harvest for me in my power empire.... I was Large Marge on Eclipse if anybody knows me. I was huge and the best power provider. I left the game with over 1/2 billion to 1 billion in assets... well... 1/2 billion in cash and many many resources... and at the time, I was probably one of the 10 richest people on the server (without interserver lot trades too).
So I want you to understand I may not be very experienced in many mmo's, but i was an expert in SWG.
The problem I have is trying new mmo's.
I get to about level 5 in both COV and LOTRO and then I just get lost. I know I'm doing something stupid (at least I hope) or that that the dev's are retarded.... but if everybody else get's through these quests, why can't I find my contact or the entrance to the instance?
I really am not dumb, but I feel so. Perhaps it's because I knew so much about SWG in dev and at launch that helped me.. plus being in beta (though there i was only really an entertainer so had no practical knowledge)
In both MMo's i felt so alone, but even when invited to group for low level, i shunned it.... I'm a bit anti-social you could say.
Neither game introduced me very well to the mechanics as a new player... and as a trial player, I was just 'glancing'..and didn't want to reseach.
LOTRO is an epic fail in introducing a 'newbie' to the game.
I was totally lost after level 4 (basicallly the intro mission set). I couldn't find my contact to meet,... I couldn't find my way back to my mission giver to give me directions... I even took a random mission and had to find someone in another city... and I couldn't. I couldn't find them.
COV was fun if repetative and I found a bit hard solo. (yes i suck at pve and pvp but enjoy both).
But again in COV at about level 5, I couldn't find an entrance to where I needed to be. I circled for about 30 minutes and was just pissed off and frustrated at that point.
I know there are probably easy solutions to both but the tut's didn't teach me those solutions and I really wished I had a help button to press.
I know both games would have been easier if I really understood how to level up and 'power up'/'skill up'.
Maybe I'm retarded
But again, I'm not stoopid, but not used to some conventions that are used in these mmo's.
And it's not for lack of guessing. I clicked on everything I could find.... obviously I missed something though.
The trials I've done as above and also EVE have made me upset about them and I disconnected after about 3 hours in both games and 5 minutes in eve.
I don't really want to learn about +1 buff or -2 debuff. Sorry.
Well, I would learn it but not on my own and the game (COV) didn't give me any hints after the initial mission set/intro.
So that's my story.
I need a game that is easy to get into, but I do want depth..... I also don't want to be frustrated by not having a manual while I do missions or complete tasks and maps.
I know I am not built as a person for fast games like fps's or in some instances mmo's... I get confused by too much going on on the screen.
I'm 35.
I do like fighting but I like easy fights you could say.... I just want to win and don't care it's an easy win. I hunted numanuma on SWG for a long while as a newb entertainer. (i did get up to master TKA)
Is there any game that introduces a player wholly to the game or as much as possible? I'm just finding so much difficulty getting into these game and more importantly, getting lost after about 5 levels in both (which makes the game unplayable if you can't find your way back ((at least in CoV I could find my way back but missions where sometimes very hard to find the instance entrance and the direction thingee diddn't help as it didn't point true to the target. (waypoints in swg were hawt).
I remember being an entertainer at launch in SWG and when I wanted to gain a crafting skill, I *think* i asked somebody else where to go.....even in beta i didn't craft.
But I picked up the basics.
Even became a master shipwright... mass production and variable quality.
I just don't 'get' the formula for crafting a ship or a quality product.
I do understand the basic of better in better out...
but never got it like others who could recite dps and shades of clothes... which is why I went into power.. and then went into shipwright when that launched.
I don't think I was a good shipwright.. but I produced massive amounts of all products and ships.
Hey... that was my thing.
I could make anything... but likely not the 'best' thing you wanted
ut still very good
and availability trumps want + no product elsewhere
so I did very very good in SWG.
arrrgh.
so why am I such a moron in these newer games?
BTW: I'm looking forward to FallenEarth... that seems to be the new SWG to me.
Comments
Yes, many SWG veterans are looking forward to it. Hope it will be a decently polished game
Speaking towards City Of *, the hero side is typically better for getting acclimated to the game. Lots of people of all levels are congregated in Atlas Park and, perhaps it's the hero mentality, but players on that side are particularly friendly and pick up groups are easy to find.
Best thing to do when tracking down contacts is to click on your contact and then open the map -- the contact will show up on the map (along with possibly a bunch of other items including your current quest greyed out, trainers, shops, black matket, etc.) I found some of the doors between the islands to be tricky to find, at least initially going from the Mercy neighborhood to Fort Darwin.
This may also help a little bit: http://cityofheroes.wikia.com/wiki/Mercy_Island#Neighborhoods
I just picked up LotRO last week. I also purchased the game after 5 days into the trial. Im having a blast in it since its catering to my casual needs as a 37 year old
Questing in LotRO requires reading and using the map. If you go to a quest giver and just accept the mission, you could get lost since there arent any default waypoints for quest location on the big map. It happened to me when I first got in, was very excited and neglected my quest log. Theres actually a lot of location detail given in the quest description.
so, thats the solution to finding quest objectives in Lord of the Rings. Read the quest, follow the map. Who knows, you may actually learn a little bit about the lore and become immersed in the game instead of powering through levels.
by the way, you've officially been stripped of your "Man-Card" for posting a title based off a chic-flick
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
well looking at what you wrote so far i think you sound like you were into the economical part of mmorpg which old SWG was amazing for.
One of the few games i was happy to spent hours and hours just harvesting, doing deals, crafting ,setting up Ads and vendors etc.
Sadly if this is what you enjoyed then CoH and LOTRO are pretty much weak crafting games and focus more on the adventure side.
Most mmorpg nowadays do have a pretty weak player made economy per say and focus more on it as a side dish .
You can give horizons a try it has a pretty nice crafting system but sadly due to its low population it kind of kilsl the fun
LOTRO and CoV are both good MMOs
I'm somewhat surprised that your having trouble learning LOTRO, since your experience in SWG should have easily prepared tyou for anything in LOTRO.
If you need an easier game, Id suggest the default learning MMORPG, World of Warcraft
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
i am on the trial on COV and loveing it! the hero side is boring to me lol. but i am finding alot of cool fun very nice people on the evil side muahaha. i think you have bad luck its cool thou happens.
and LOTRO i loved it to! but got kind of boring after a while thou i am more of a PVP person.

Which FF Character Are You?
Are you serious in your post? Because it's impossible to get lost in CoX. Impossible. Another MMO where getting lost is impossible, or almost, is Guild Wars because of the markers on the map that show you where to go, but since there are invisible walls in GW you have to use certain roads, you cannot just go directly where you want to go so you can get lost because you went the wrong way but you still see clearly on the map where the quest is, and once a quest is finished, again, it shows on the big map in yellow where to go to get your rewards. As for LOTRO, it's a very casual MMO, but I have to admit that there is no marker and as another one said, if you do not pay attention to what the NPCs say and the quest log, then yes, you can look for a long time, but since the community in LOTRO is super nice you can alwayas ask for directions, did it myself a few times.
Frankly, the only MMO that has confused me was Anarchy Online, I ended up not playing it because of it.
