I'm shocked any girls would be playing this game at all, its just a very manly game in general.
Dude, Seriously that isn;t worth a reply.
Anyway, I plan on playing AoC myself. Though I am sterotyped to be a horny teen (since I'm 17), I quite frankly am non-chalant about the boobs, nudity, etc. Killing myself over a pair of breasts or interacting in permiscuity is not my thing. All i care about is how well the combat is, customization of character, and the storyline; Gameplay overall. I'm kinda into the Conan franchise because i bonded with the movie when I was a kid lol, a little wierd I know but anyway I'm looking forward to AoC.
I think the whole fact that there are nipples in game is good enough to not play AoC. I hoped MMORPG will stay clean from such a silly marketting attempts to get interests from kids that never had a real sex yet.
Right, cutting off heads is a lot cleaner and by far less a silly marketing attempt than including body details.
I actually meant that as well. The whole Mature Rating is one big joke and it's an apparent attempt to lure kids into game.
Although the ingame content should not come as any surprise to anyone after all it is a company trying to make money off us the consumers, I do agree with the Mature Rating being a joke. I really wish they would do something about enforcing the "law" (?) I mean what is the point in having a rating system if your not going stand behind it. UNLESS like previously mentioned it is in fact nothing more then a marketing ploy to attract under age consumers.
Don't confuse a players ability, with a class being Over Powered.

Who defines what is too manly for women to play and what isn't? Seriously, as a social psychology student I'd like to know the answer. How would you define 'manly' anyway, and why? It'd really help me with my thesis - thanks.

I would say the retail industry and some if the entertainment industry determine what is considered "manly". This would be done through marketing via a sterio typical blue print of what has worked in the past when trying to appeal to a certain sex and or demographic.

There is a continuum of human behavioral traits attributeable to masculinity at one end of the spectrum and femininity at the other end. If you're doing your thesis, I'm sure this is probably outlined in a very basic introduction to psychology type text book...probably first semester.
Good luck with your higher education. I hope it helps.

I'm not looking for the current textbook examples from renowned psychologists. I'm wondering why he thinks Age of Conan would be a purely masculine game, not appropriate for women. As I strongly disagree.
Are you 80+ years old? I think us young'ns can appreciate it took the time to read the books ( ' ;
You don't have to be 80 to have read the books
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
First of all, games are made to be played in your spare time. Something else to do besides watching TV.
I am not a girl, but I think that most women care least if the game has nipples in it or not and do not take offense to them. I did know a girl that played Second Life for all of about 30 minutes before breaking down crying and calling her mom because some guy invited her to his private place and probably showed her his animated cock.
There is a huge difference between keeping with a story, and full on hard core pornography. Breasts have always been givin a high appreciation in all societies because women use them to nurture their young. Only the crazy right wing psuedo-Christian Americans think there is anything wrong with showing their children bare breasts, even though the kids sucked (much less seen) on a pair when they were born. Go to Europe, breasts are not a big deal there.
To think kids are going to be ogling over a pair of pixelated nipples, and then somehow effect your game play, is stupid. When anyone, any age, can go to youtube and see full on hard core porno for free.
I cannot think of any women I know that would be offended by this game, not even my mother.
I will be checking this game out to see if it can provide me with decent entertainment for the money, and to see how the end-game plays. All these discussions will disappear when the full game launches, because everyone will finally understand how NOT a big deal it is.
well what about all the females who complain about all the females in mmo's looking like pornstars. all those women will be queing up to make fat female avatars, oh wait no they wont.
As a female gamer this game is at a frustratingly familiar point in its progress: I can't find out the things I am really interested in, as most of the reviews are about core mechanics, PvP etc.
Things I would really like to know:
1. Is there any social center in the game? (The best to date in MMORPGs for me being PE-CU Cantinas in SWG). Having a tavern (etc) does not mean people actually go there and talk!
2. Do people actually talk to each other, or just grind out levels and only ask for assistance if they can't do a particular quest alone?
3. Is there dancing (think SWG), or just one or two dubious "click once" emotes (think naked gnomes on top of mailboxes in WoW).
4. Are there nice clothes / social clothing? In a game setting where "men are men" do we have the choice of only wearing a dress that looks like a sugar sack or armour? (I hate games where the NPCs get nice clothing, but the characters never can). This game looks to have amazing graphics, but did they even bother to make some nice dresses?
5. If the character creation is using a selection of faces, are they any good or is there one or two decent ones and a mass of ugly grumpy ones?
To me the whole nipples on characters thing is a complete non-issue. I suspect I'm not alone in assuming that if I see a mostly naked female avatar in an MMORPG then good chances it's a guy looking to entice favours out of other guys.
A thing that would make me believe an MMORPG had really thought about appealing to female gamers ... side saddles as an option. I really wish CCP/White Wolf would make a Dark Ages World of Darkness: would I play a Toreador who rode side saddle in a beautiful dress? Absolutely (and she would be a vampire to be feared, too!). Looking pretty doe not mean not lethal
Some of the posts on this thread make me laugh a little really.
Surely if a teenage boy wanted to see a pair of breasts and has access to the internet there must be thousands of better places to see them than AoC....
And hey, Im sure theres plenty of eye candy for the females too.
This game will be breaking down barriers which is always a welcome thing for me. Sure there are plenty of games more "Mature" than this one and there even MMORPGs that are more "Mature", but this will be the first big Name MMORPG to include these things. Next time it will be easier. As for female players, I think the major thing keeping them away will be the lack of craft-only or non-fighting classes.

Is there any social center in the game? (The best to date in MMORPGs for me being PE-CU Cantinas in SWG). Having a tavern (etc) does not mean people actually go there and talk! In beta there is chatter, but I haven't encountered a place where people are gathered socializing on a regular basis like you might find in WoW or the old SWG cantinas. AoC is geared mostly toward the PvP end game. Yes there is a PvE aspecvt to this game, but to be honest it really isn't all that great. There are better PvE games out right now then AoC. 2. Do people actually talk to each other, or just grind out levels and only ask for assistance if they can't do a particular quest alone? It is like most games. People chat in global about anything and everything. From price of gas to questions about quest to how do you do this or where do I go to do that. Same old same old. 3. Is there dancing (think SWG), or just one or two dubious "click once" emotes (think naked gnomes on top of mailboxes in WoW). Ummm...the animations in AoC are nothing to write home to mother about. Most combat animations are fine...and running and walking...the rest. They need work. There are some clothing options. I haven't seen all of them I am sure, but you can get many different pieces of clothing. This is good in my opinion. The one thing that really still annoys me is no game company has yet managed to do long hair and helmets right. AoC is no different. So I just have "don't show helmet" checked. 5. If the character creation is using a selection of faces, are they any good or is there one or two decent ones and a mass of ugly grumpy ones? You can completely tweak your characters look. Similar to SWG and pre-"Bring Back the Sexy" Vanguard. However there is just like those games limited hair styles and some hairstyles for one race are not usable for another. Also, some of the sliders don't really do a whole lot - but at least they give you the option to sorta tweak them. To me the whole nipples on characters thing is a complete non-issue. I suspect I'm not alone in assuming that if I see a mostly naked female avatar in an MMORPG then good chances it's a guy looking to entice favours out of other guys. I think the whole fact that there are nipples in game is good enough to not play AoC. I hoped MMORPG will stay clean from such a silly marketting attempts to get interests from kids that never had a real sex yet.
Yes your right. Because the kids did not have a way to get naked breasts until AoC came along.
Really, these are pixelated nipples, not really that arousing. If you go into google right now and type "sex" or "Porn" or "Naked" you will get alot more then you will ever seen on Conan. And im pretty sure the kids have figured that out.
If Funcom put in naked women for the sake of naked women then it would be sad, they put them in because they are trying to stay true to the lore, whether anyone likes it or not. As is it is pretty much, who cares, pixelated nipples will be pretty cool for the first 10 minutes then it is going to grow boring. Then its back to google for the kiddies.
What I want to know is, is the game worth playing based on content, gameplay etc. I could care less about nudity, and gore (and yes, I am a female gamer). I am looking for a new game that will hold my interest, and so far this game has failed to do so. I really wish they had capped the lvl'ing to at least lvl 20-25, that way you can actually get a glimpse at the other aspects the game has to offer, rather than just the "newbie zone".
So, female gamers in the Open Beta, what do you think? Reading the Conan books never made me want to rush out and be one of the women in them. (Why oh why isn't anyone ever going to make a Sword of Truth MMORPG... now THAT had some female characters worth playing!) So, before I preorder, I'd love to hear what some actual female gamers--or male gamers who have an opinion on the subject--think about being a woman in a game that spent a lot of time getting us excited about the fact that there would, indeed, be nipples in game?
I think most of us, hopefully, are adults here. We can then set aside the playground giggles and yawn that there will be nipples. I mean its less than porn. Porn is less than real sex.
Besides. Plenty of lesbians out there in the world. Its a huge chunk of the pie these days.
Only reason to be pissed off or offended would be a giant cucumber sticking out of conan's ass.
It isnt the world fault that nipples, the giver of life's nutrients to the infant, is considered "dirty". I think we can let go of the bra, let them fly free, and start working on skirts&pants vs kilts&shorts.
All of you must be American. Your views are so screwed up. It's ok to chop off heads and mass murder innocent people, but if you see a nipple it's the end of the world.
You cry about little kids in the game. Big deal. There's going to be retards in every game. Why do you think they implemented the ignore feature? So you don't have to listen to their babbling. It's very simple to do.
I will be buying it. Yes I am a female gamer. Yes I am in beta. No I am not offended by nekkid females or males (not in my line of work I better not be!) Does the gore offend me. A little. Am I a fan of Robert E. Howard and his Conan novels....YES! My brothers were huge fans of all things Conan and had every edition of Savage Sword of Conan(of which I am the proud owner of now ). Take a look at this post I made on the AoC boards last year. Reunion In Scarlet <<<< Clicky! Here is one of many post I made over on the Vault Network Boards back in 04 regarding the concept of a game company making a Conan based MMORPG. Yes back then it had crossed our minds and I really didn't think anyone could pull it off...I guess I was wrong huh. Conan MMORPG Thread <<< Clicky! I know a lot of females that will look at this game and cringe, but I also think there are others out there like me that grew up on this stuff and will wish to participate in game based on the world of Conan. Hope that answers your question.
So you've come around after playing the game Teala? Just yesterday it sounded like you were preparing to skewer the game in a review (I'm not on the attack, please don't take offense -- just curious.)
No I am not pre-ordering and will not be playing it at launch. I will keep playing WoW for now until AoC is about 6 more months to 1 year along in life. I will not go through another "Vanguardesque" release. That is all I am saying. I think AoC has potential just as Vanguard did. But I am not going to put myself through that kind of gaming torment again.
I agree and it's rational, I certainly don't hold that against you ( ' ; I felt the same way having pre-ordered SWG and being disappointed with its lack of completion. I'd prefer not to go through that again.
