I'd like to thank the op for revealing this link to me. I had heard of Pyschonauts back when it was first released, and every magazine give it a rave review. So, following the op's link, I downloaded the game, and was over the moon. It has been a long time since I played a single player game. I don't know why, but in the past, when I tried to get into a single player, I would have the feeling that I was missing something in one of my MMO's. So I would not be able to play them.
This game has reminded me how brilliant single player games can be. I thoroughly recommend that you give it a try. Especially if you are into adventure games, although this is not strictly an adventure game. It is actually very difficult to bracket what genre it would come under. It comes across as some warped kids game, but you'll soon see it isn't (within the first few seconds I would suppose). Dark comical genious is at work at this game, and although it is a completely different type of game, I found the comedy on par with Sam and Max. The graphical style is brilliant in its own right, even though the game is now a few years old. Gameplay is also brilliant, with the game being split between you wandering around campus doing your own thing, discovering stuff, and getting to know all the different personalities that are in the game. A lot of this section is in the form of you talking to people and watching the resulting cut-scenes. None are tiresome to watch, and even though some can be quite lengthy, I found them great to watch. So I suggest you grab yourself a brew, and enjoy this section of play.
When you are finally ready to get down to some action, the gameplay switches to a 3d platform- style of game. These are much more linear (being that it is a platform section, such as the first one, the sergeant's obstacle course). Incidentally, I found the first section of the obstacle course to be too dark, and as a result, I found it hard to see where I was meant to be going. It's good to bump up the brightness (you can do so by pressing esc then options), and things become a lot more clear.
Do not be dis-heartened on these sections. Some levels are fiendishly designed, but persevere. If you find yourself stuck, try doing something, like hitting something, or thinking it through logically. Your efforts will be rewarded, and I found a great sense of achievement when I finally managed to clear a platform section.
There are a multitude of aspects I could go into, but instead, why don't you do yourselves a favour and try it out for yourselves?
By the way, one thing. Yes, the game is free to play, and you do not have to log-in, or anything to play. However, it is not a case of downloading the client and then you have the game to play willy-nilly. You have to also download the Gametap player, and play the game via that. I didn't notice any hidden catches, and I trust they won't put any ad-ware into my machine (they had better not!). Basically, you have to watch a fifteen second advert before you play your game, which is fine for such a great game. Also, there are nearly a hundred other games you can download for free and play in a similar way. (Games like Hitman 1 and 2, Thief, a lot of retro classics like Ghosts n Goblins, etc). You can also upgrade to a gold membership, which grants you access to loads of other premium games, and at a dollar for the first month (and no committment to continue subscription) I am going to do so, just to play the Sam & Max series of games.
Anyway, I've went on for long enough. Thanks to the op once again. I've found the single player game yet again!

This game has also reminded me that single player games can be incredibly fun, however when i think about how unique and fun Psychonauts is i get slightly depressed that i haven't played a lot of games as fun or similar to Psychonauts (If there even are any, closest ones i have played are Grim Fandango and Earthbound but they are only similar in that they focus on humorous and well thought out stories). Instead now it seems to me theres a lot of focus on steroid pumped space marines fighting aliens, and WWII ( focus varies console to console ).
I hear people talk about how challenging this game can be all the time but the only times i ever got frustrated was trying to get some coin thing from a cliff i had to jump to and the meat circus where i died a couple of times or i let that kid die like a million times).
I downloaded this game a long time ago, and i regret not buying it. Also came kind of a shock to me that this game sold poorly, i am set on buying Brutal Legend as soon as it comes out now and expect to follow Tim Schafers works from now on.
