www.Eurogamer.net forums has a feature whereby users can make groups based on kind of common interests. Anyone can join these groups, and they are advertised in a individual thread. Anyone a member of these groups would have subforums at the top related to those groups.
I think its an interesting idea though admittedly maybe completely unviable in terms of excessive programming or bandwidth or making the site too big altogether.
