Um exactly who is this "they" ?

I mean if you saw someone on a forum post that.. ok.

In one of the developer blogs they specificly stated they had no intention of being able to dent WoW's subscriber base.. that it was a social phenom like facebook.

Now if you meant to say that you don't think it will run on your computer.. perhaps.

Those are just two entirely different things.

I can run the game fine on my machine (3800+ X2 (socket 939 version) with a geforce 9600GT and 2 gigs of ram).

However, ya WoW will run on a heck of a lot less...

I still don't see what this has to do with WoW (whether you can run the game or not).  Funcom certainly never stated this game would de-throne WoW.. (as mentioned previously they talked about this in one of the dev blogs).

Who are "they" and why do "they" give a rat's ass what (lol) dethrones (lol) WoW?

So sick of these kind of post. If you don't like the game just don't play it ffs. Always comes back to comparing to WoW. every friggan game WoW, WoW, WoW . Stay on WoW.

Well Therapy, these kind of posts are definitely needed, so that the average computer owner does not waste money buying the client when it won't run decently on their computer.  Next time think before posting.  Funcom's minimum specs won't run the game in any manner of respectability.  My machine exceeds their specs and still runs it like molasses.

I apologise if i seem upset, but sometimes if you dont go thru entire post it seems like its constantly the same thing. Like beating a dead horse. Anyway didn't mean to jump onto anyone.

You have me worried.  I am not a techie person (far from it) and I used that system to see if I could run AoC.  It was as you thought ActiveX control, so what does this mean?  I haven't inadvertently put spy-ware or something into my machine have I?

  • AdamantineAdamantine Member RarePosts: 5,094

ActiveX is a technology that allows you to load a dynamic library (.ocx, ActiveX control) over the internet.

For all I know, thats is the only way one could possibly implement the functionality offered by that website.

ActiveX only works with IE; Firefox users such as me wont get any functionality there. Also users of any other operating system but Windows wont get any functionality there.

And wont ever. The very idea to load executable code over the internet is obviously extremely dangerous. Such an excecutable will run with the rights the user has, and can do anything the user is allowed to do. Thats why internet sites usually have script languages such as JavaScript or bytecode languages such as Java on them, not executable code. That way, code can be run in a so called "sandbox" and the damage it can do to your system can be limited.

Microsoft has tried to compensate for this obvious drawback with signing techniques, where you verify the ActiveX control as being from a "trustworthy" company. Thats still not acceptable to any reasonable security expert - all a potential hacker has to do is find an ActiveX control thats signed as trustworthy, but has an error that allows it to be hacked. He is also free to choose the version of the ActiveX control he wants etc, and if he hides the control on the website, you wont even notice it is there at all.

Fortunately, nobody, or hardly anyone, ever used ActiveX.

They say EVERY game that is going to come out is going to be a WoW killer. It never happens.

WOW is here to stay  fore a while

AOC will create a niche market for itself

Guild Wars ,wow are kinda fun and casual games , merciful on computer specs and any tom dick and harry can play it

AOC is more hardcore less merciful if you dont have a gaming rig .

Combat especially melle is many a time cumbersome though different and enjoyable but not for everyone. Its too fast

    QFT

The only thing that will kill WoW is WoW.

That's not to say another game won't have more numbers some day. I do believe that will happen. But WoW will still be around, and still have millions of players, and still be earning Blizzard hundreds-of-millions of dollars of revenue.

There are a few scant reactionaries and malcontents that may imply or suggest that AoC will dethrone WoW, but you just have to consider the source. I've enjoyed beta testing the game, however I believe it will cater to a niche group of players, along with a few Robert E Howard fans and like LoTRO the world will be confined to the authors vision. To me this makes the game seem constraining and limited.

I'm running the game on a 2.8Ghz, 2g RAM, with a 7800 GeForce (AGP) card. It seems to run fairly well considering its still in beta and there is quite a bit of hitching, rendering lag and general hiccups (at least for me). The combat is engaging, however it isn't providing any additional 'next gen' type play, nor was I expecting it to. I can see PKers and Raiders enjoying this game. Its fast paced hack and slash, giving people the sensation that they are involved with their character.

I do like the world its very vibrant and the cities are quite impressive. Though its based on a book with history and lore, the game doesn't 'feel' like it has originality indicative to a ground floor MMO. I can see people jumping on board to try it out, but I'm not sure if it will have staying power for them. I don't plan on playing it, but it does have its niceties and should do well.
