question of intermingling races...

hello, it seems like a lot of this game parallels some DAoC pvp, the splitting of three races, etc...
my question is, if i want to be a herald of Xolti, a stygian only class, and my friends want to be barbarians, or some other class, can i still play with them, or will i be restricted to just playing within my faction?

is there any type or penalty? like i start on the other side of the world and wont be able to travel there until lv 20 or something?
