Do you refer to special events in the game, or just day to day playing?

Little things like titles, or a unique item, even if it isn't the uberest thing going, make nice rewards, as long as they aren't handed out like candy.

SWG is especially bad at this. So is DAoC.

I beat Rathma in single hand life or death combat and all I got was this lousy sig.

It just seems to me that players have gotten really whiny about this kind of thing. I remember back when just playing games with a ton of other people was cool. Now if you dare to kill them or make them work or do things they don't like or actually let their character die, they scream and cry like babies. Maybe it's the overall wussification of society, but geez, now it's all "gimme gimme gimme!". You see it anytime a beta closes or the game goes retail. "Wahhh! I don't wanna pay money!" "Wahhh! I should be able to play for free!"

    Just kinda gets old fast.

I absolutely love items in mmrpgs. I kept playing AC1 for the longest time because there were always better items to find (due to the random item generator). Items dont just serve the purpose of rewarding you, but letting you know that you are achieving some PROGRESS. No one really likes to be stuck in the same outfit for a long time. It just gets boring. Furthermore, items help to distinguish players between each other, both in physical look as well as denoting class/stature. When youre at some noob village and someone comes in with shinning gold armor, you automatically know that regardless of the persons level or skills, hes someone of higher status. Then you want to be in that persons shoes, so you have something to strive for. A further reason to play the game. Love that feeling :)

I personally feel If im paying a monthly fee to GRIND, I should get ar eward for it, lol.
Yay, now my next level will take 2 weeks! yay! THen after than only another 2 months and I can participate in PvP and the game will be fun!

Its rediculous, MMORPGS are starting to be more like a job and less like a game.

Maybe it's the overall wussification of society
I agree in real life its stupid to want a reward for everything you do.
BUT THIS IS A GAME LOL

games are all about REWARDS, FUN...
Games are not jobs, and these days too many companies are slipping into the zone of
"its its harder for them to get further its more of a reward to them wehen they finish"
well now lets see, most people (especially in MMORPGS) are just saying screw it and moving on.

I remember back when just playing games with a ton of other people was cool
hell, I rember when just playing a GAME was fun.
    But even thats changing now.

I think that when a game becomes more like a job than a game it's time to find a different game. The best way is to find a guild or a bunch of prople you have fun playing with and just play the game and the levels will go up while you are having fun not just spending weeks worring about getting to the next level.

I meant things like giving someone item X just for reaching this level.  An item that doesn't actually do anything, but is purely visual.  Especially items that seem out of place being used that way.  For example, when COH implements capes, you are going to need to be lvl 20.  The capes as far as I know don't actually do anything, and they have other items that are meant as prestige coming out in the same patch.  Doesn't make much sense to me to have them be rewards just for spending X amount of time playing when it is the only real costume option not available at the start.  Maybe it's just me though.

Im guessing the person who started this thread likes CoH. Quite frankly i hate it. Mainly because there is so little to do, and also because there are no items. I love getting new gear, its fun and it gives you a reason to keep playing. Plus it makes you look cooler :p

People these days are forgetting that you play a game to have FUN. You don't play a game to be rewarded.

Yes it could add some fun when you're rewarded. But some people these days just play the game TO BE REWARDED, not to HAVE FUN.

Well, for some people, the only way to HAVE FUN is TO BE REWARDED.

    Prestige rewards are nice.

They are not enought to keep folks motivated, but they are a big part of the equation.

Despite the fact CoH is a superhero game and start with a minus -200%, I will be trying it as soon as I kick myself hard enought to buy a new computer, which is a slow process that just start(asking my friends where to buy a good computer atm).

But most importantly, dont reward the wrong persons, or I quit right away(dont give raiders best soloing or grouping tools, they dont deserve it in any form, they can solo or group earn it if they care, if they dont do it, they dont deserve it).

EDIT: Rewards are the fuel that keep me moving...they are by no mean FUN or BAD, they are just the fuel...no gaz no miles, no progress, no nothing, no me...rewards(in any form) NEED to be there, if they are not there, I will play the game 1 evening and then be done with it!

Well, technically EQ does that as well. Getting your surname at lvl 20, losing the spellbook at 35 back in the day. Change of title at 51, and then the Baron or whatever titles for AXP.

As for getting prestige type items, I have no problem with them as long as they remain purely visual, ie no stats. It's just another of many carrots dangled in front of you to keep you paying, and possibly playing.

I did think it funny when one of the SWG csrs gave a special badge to an afk musician bot for being the best musician, or somesuch.

Enlighten me please and tell what kind of rewards people participating in the "special olympics" get that are better then say what the ordinary olympics people get?

    Worldwide fame?
Millions of dollars in advertising money?

I started out liking COH, mainly because it was different that everone else.  Lately it seems like they are trying to hard to become a clone of everyone else.
