Am I right? I don't wanna bust out, buy the first release, run outa content and bust out another $40.00 for Xpac or whatever it is they call them. That's kinda spendy for a game.
How long for a casual player, do you think it'll take before having to buy one of the xpacs? I know there's only one officially, but anything that costs $40.00 like Faction, and those additions, are pretty much xpacs.

There is a pack with all the expansions included a lot cheaper, $60 or so. Well worth it.
Oh really didn't know that. That's not bad
for new players, my advice is buy any ONE of the main games, and eye of the north. u are going to hit lvl 10 preetty fast
I have played for a little over two years now. and run multiple characters back and forth between Prophesies, Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North and still have many places i haven't explored yet.
I think that I have gotten a massive amount of fun for my investment, but that is just my opinion. I play warrior, ranger, elementalist, necromancer, dervish, assassin and mesmer class atm but have sampled every class available.
Looking forward to another year of combat and exploration.
To be honest I really don't think it's possible to run out of content in a week. There's no way you'll know the game well enough to be able to finish certain missions. Plus there's hard mode etc etc! I still struggle with some annoying missions and I've been playing over 2 years.
When I played the original Guild Wars and finished it, I decided to build another character. Before I even got far with my second character, I decided to create yet another one. I think character building and getting all the skills is one of the main and fun aspects of the game. And by the time I finished Prophecies with my third character, I bought all the other expansion packs and got started on Nightfall, which is where I'm currently at.
Luckily though, I found good deals on the games and paid less than I would have if I just used the online store.
I think GW is worth the money. At some point in every mmo things can get repetitive. Also you don't have to pay a monthly fee to play.
roughly.. if you can't find a special price..
however let's put this into perspective, I also play WoW though I admit not nearly as much as GW.. (mainly cause some friends play WoW) and I've had it for about.. 3 years.. counting the expansion, so far that's been a 655.64$ investment...
>_> <_< ^_^
Ive playd this game since the start casually off and on, somtimes id take a few months off sometimes id play for a month straight 24/7 I just beat the game around christmas and finally bought my first expansion - eye of the north - AFTER 3 years of playing.
Theres tonnes of crap to do in this game content wont be a problem. Even if you do rush and finish it its still worht playing during holiday events with all the prizes mini games and contests they got going. Buy it ... put it down pick it up youll spend way less than those scams they call monthly charges on mmo's where you pay 15 a month for what? FOR WHAT? WHAT ARE YOU PAYING FOR ? SERIOUSLEY NOTHING!! when they get more content you ahve to BUY IT tooo!! LAHAHAHHAHA SCAM so what are those monthly fees for? servers fees? right...
Anyway you should start with Prophecies first since its got the most content and get eye of the north with it which is the expansion. Eye of the North is the only real expansion to the main game, the other ones like Nightfall or Factions are just games in themeselves which I have yet to play and eventually will when Im done going through eye of the north. I stil havent even finished a lot of the main missions from the Prophecies and tbh I probably dont see myself finishing them anytime soon, ah well I can always install this game few months from now and continue where I left off without worrying worrying about my money draining every month for nothing. You buy the game you own it, like it should be ... play it whenever you want however you want this is the BEST MMORPG EVER MADE, best combat system, best graphics, best bug free super fast client, polished, everything you want in a game. Looking forward to GW2
If you get Prophecis + Eye of The North (they com bundled together now if you look) that should cost you $60... Ill bet you anything by the time you finish them you would have spent twice that in monthly fees in another mmo. For me anyway I would have spent 3 years in monthly fees, thats $540 for a game I cant even play when my sub runs out.. so whats cheaper $60 forever, or $540 for 3 years?
I still haven't finished Prophecies (need to finish Ascension quests), and i got Factions, Nightfall, and Eye of the North to finish. I've had the game since around January or Februrary.
Pro TIP: Just get Prophecies first and finish it, then decide if you want to get the rest or wait for GW2.
The only way you're paying $170 anymore is if you go straight to the in-game store. I bought Factions almost a year ago for only $20. Shop around, don't go with the first place you see it.
or: Get a boxset. It'll make your investment much less.
I'm not a WoW fanboy, I've actually grown quite tiresome of WoW myself, but if you plan to play Guild Wars i warn you with one thing and that is this... Only play if you love storylines and love PvP... Some will argue with me, but let's be honest here. PvE has no point to it other than something to do when not PvPing so you can get a flashy item with a new or different skin. I played GW for 4 months and went back to WoW in the first month playing both for the last 3. And i know, also level so yu can earn those skills and not use your "PvP points" to buy them; but i found it much easier to just make a level 20 char and go from there.
It's called "End Game Content".
The argument that PvE has no point to it is like saying gaming has no point to it. The point is that it's fun. There are plenty of quests and missions to do that follow awesome storylines. The cutscenes are something that many other MMOs lack too.
There are tons of PvE titles, mini-games etc. too. I honestly don't see how someone can see PvE has no point. The majority of people play Guild Wars for the PvE aspect. Though PvP areas are teeming with people, the majority are out in the world questing and doing missions.
Also, arguing that the point of PvE is due to the items is a very weak one too. Guild Wars is in no way item-based, so it is beside me how someone can play PvE just to get a rare-skinned item.
Unless youre the type that blows through content in a matter of hours rather than days or weeks, then buying the first game will last you quite a while. So its really only a 40$ investment. And considering you dont have a sub to keep up. Even if you did buy all three it pays for itself by the time you get to the end of each expansion.
search amazon. i found Factions+Nightfall at $43, im going to buy it for my 3rd account
here in Manila, Prophecies costs p500 on an ongoing promo by its main distributor. thats roughly $11
Have fun storming the castle! - Miracle Max
Guild wars is much cheaper than WoW. Look at it this way.
Pay $50 for WoW( when it first came out), $15/mo for 3years, then buy BC for $40, then pay 15/mo for another year and buy WoTLK
Right there, that's $150 for the original plus the two expansions. Then $15/mo for four years, which is $720. SO that's $870 for WoW for the game plus the two expansions and 4years of play.
With Guild wars the investment is dependent upon the amount of expansions you buy. Every game is playable without the Original. You can buy factions without having the original and still play it. That's because Guild Wars is the original and NightFall and Factions are just campaigns. You do need Guild Wars in order too play EoTN however.
You're looking at it as dropping $170 right now. You don't need too. You can buy Guild wars now for $40 and then in 2 months buy Eye of the north for $40. By that time Guild Wars 2 will be released and you will have no reason too buy factions or Nightfall. But either way, you can spend as much as $170 if you want, but that's up too you. It's still much cheaper than those who spent $900 on WoW thus far.
I got Guild wars since beta and just bought the expansion/campaigns as they released. Had I needed too pay a monthly fee. I would have spent well over $170, the same amount as WoW essentially. So guild wars is much cheaper.
Plus, depending on your play style, you can get 4months out of anyone of the games. I spent 6months on the original just by doing pvp a lot. Plus I didn't play all the time.
Playing: WoW,
Played: Aion, AoC, Eve, EQ, EQ2, LOTRO, Runescape, Guild Wars, DAoC, Planetside, SWG, WAR, Darkfall
Wanting to try: DCU Online
Waiting For: Star Wars The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2.
Just a minor correction: Prophecies (the original game), Factions, and Nightfall are all campaigns. Eye of the North is the only expansion to the series, and requires any of the campaigns. Prophecies is not required for EotN.
I once played a MUD, where you bought credits which can either be turned into gold in the game, or used to buy artifacts to make your character uber. credits were roughly 10 Dollars for 15 credits, or so...and some of the artifacts ranged from little stuff, 50Credits, to the big swords and axes, for over 1600 credits...also the credits were used for lessons on getting your skills up to the highest level they can be (it wasnt all leveling...)
Sooo, I played this game for about 4 years, dropping 100 dollars each pay check...I remember once my brother, my self and a friend of mine all pitched in and bought a huge pack of credits for 500 dollars once.
I invested WELL over 5000 dollars in that game, EASY...but I tell ya, it was the best Eff'n game I ever played. even if it was Texted based. web browser. it was awesome.
for the curious minds, it was
aetolia.com
trust me if you actually know how the game actually can be it will take u atlease 3 months to finish the first one.
sure you go thru the story line n all and finishes kinda a little fast. only max level 20....
but theres titles and so many side missions and so you dont know about.
^^^ exactly

Yeah when you read that and unfortunately we do all the time... It's the PvP people trying to force their will on the whole game and community. By nature PvP is very agressive so they try to manhandle the more passive PvE group. The stable person will either find the good in both, which amazingly GW's has. Or enjoy one or the other and respect those that like the other side.
GW's has a wonderful PvE part to it and with Nightfall adding in Hero's was a wonderful addin to PvE that leaves most mmo's in the dust, in terms of really adding a game-changing feature while in release and then allowing that feature to be retroactive through all campaigns.
And I don't bash a game hard when it tells you what it is and then does what it says. GW's didn't hide behind anything at all. They delivered the game they said they were making. So I look at the pluses of 20 levels, the limited gear etc. If GW's 2 goes another direction and is upfront, I then will judge it under those rules set forth. Balance and fun should be the bottom-line.
I am really sorry to the op for being off topic. But why do several people and the title refer to buying a game as an investment?
