Need help with Video Card upgrade

ButcherJohnButcherJohn Member UncommonPosts: 16

I have a Athlon XP 3200+  ,  going to upgrade 1GB memory to 2Gb. I have a 128 MB DDR NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200XT. I would like to upgrade this card.  But here is my problem, My mother board, a  ASUS A7V8X-LA only has a AGP 8x/4x (1.5V) slot and a 250w power supply. Im on a small budget so I can't buy a new PC at this time. The cards I've looked at need 300w + , so any help with this woud be great.

a new PSU? A new power supply?

Go to bestbuy or circuit city. Purchase card. Put in computer. Boot up. Stable when playing game? If yes, then your fine.  Dependent upon your build, you may not need a new power supply. If you do, you can just take the video card back to bestbuy or circuit city. Which is the great thing about buying in a brick and mortar store. Also, if you're the one paying the power bill, you'll want to get a power supply that has an energy efficieny rating of greater than 80%.  Keep a look out on www.slickdeals.com for cpu's and graphic cards.

A lot of people may tell you other things, but your best bet is a trial and error situation.

Agree...PSU at 250W is well below anything that will improve much.

On the other hand, trial and error as described above is at least worth a shot...

GL and start saving up more $$ even if it's only $10 a week,  make a few sacrifices.

    I didn't know you could get a 350w power supply for under $50.  a 7600GS/GT for $114 . This I can afford.

    Thanks for the help guys

Ok budy, are you serious!! This may be the most retarded thing i've read on the hardware section of these forums. Ya, if this was the last case senerio with no other options, then maybe. But come on, you cant actually think that this is the best way to choose a card. Look up the power ratings and actually power requirements for the card. I garentee there will be multiple reviews listing them within a quick google search. Moreover, with best buy's esteemed warantee record, do you realy want to take the chance on reterning a used compoter component?

I up graded memory to 2Gb,  a 500w power supply that has an energy efficieny rating of 80%. Installed a GeForce 7600. Again thanks for all the information.
