It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!
I mean seriously? What's the point?
It is just annoying that you have to press all 3 buttons for the exact same effect.
Combos - no point either.
How about we just get more diverse special abilities?
Like you used one ability, the other will be available.
The combat just doesn't make sense.

thats why when I finally get on Im rolling a healer (for the first time in my MMO life). Otherwise I may try a necromancer.
Melee combat with that odd directional stuff doesnt appeal to me either
2 reasons why
1 to get combo attacks with a fatality at end
2 to make it harder for ingame bots to farm
The point of the directional attacks, is to enhance the individual player skill. Because if it weren't for the directional attacks, I'd say the combat would feel similar to CoX. Reason being, is because in CoX you use special attacks on recharge, as you do here (atleast I do, since I'm an assassin), and then you just hit the attack button, and damage is random. In AoC, if you choose a shielded direction, you will do less damage than an exposed direction.
This is the first MMO I've played Since WoW, that I've been impressed with. This game feels complete, and it's a smooth game, with a twist on the combat system.
further into the game, once you understand the tactics and strategy embodied in the combat system, you would understand.
Who do you think is going to have more of an advantage in combat...someone who comes at you swinging wildly with their weapon, or a trained swordman, who plans his attacks, opens up your defense, and then makes his strike?
AoC combat takes skill. You COULD spam directional attacks wildly, but you would die frequently, and quickly become frustrated.
Learn to watch your opponant's defenses (those little white brackets around them). Hit the weak spots....or if you want to open them up for a particular combo, feint to the other side to make them open themselves up for that combo to actually land.
It starts off simple at early levels, and slowly layers complexity as you go.
By level 30, understanding how, when, and where to swing means the difference between life and death.
I remember back in 1999, folks kept asking me if I was stockpiling food. I always answered, "No, I'm stockpiling ammo and making a list of people who are stockpiling food"
I feel the same way as you man, the directional attacks simply seem like a hassle to me, when it comes right down to it if your in a fast paced intense battle with someone 9 out of 10 times are you going to button mash those directional attacks instead of taking the time to look for "weak spots"......
I can see where analyzing you opponent will take skill and i dont know about lvl 80 pvp, and if your oppenent has a shield (Guardian, ToS, Dark Teamplar ect.) i can see that hitting around it will help, but for all those classes without one, let the mash fest begin.
well, that is obviously your fault then? either cant think fast enough, or too lazy to.
I see the same thing in my RL martial arts class. The people who fight like children wildly swinging everywhere get their asses kicked and quit.

To increase the likely-hood of developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome earlier in life than expected! Unfortunately I already have it, and don't plan to play this anymore than I have so its not gonna effect me...

I can see where you are coming from, as well as i edited my post. But just from watching the videos and hearing what people have to say about melee combat people don't seem to concentrate on "open" spots as much as trying to get your opponent down as fast as possible....but i guess only time can tell.
Finally a MMO with a bit more detail to combat and that makes melee combat much more interesting - and people are complaining about it?
There really is no pleasing some folk.
I for one love the combat, it makes it so much more interesting than the other mmo's, and brings an element of skill into it.
Seriously guys, when you played pacman did you complain about the ghosts? It would have been a boring game without them... and the same applies here, making other mmo's such as WoW boring compared to AoC.
its actually a 5 way directional fest you "learn" at higher levels...Everyone will macro them into combos anyway
Either way once you learn about the class abilities, a more skillful player would even be able to adjust their guard to prevent some classes special attacks from hurting too much.
Well hopefully it works like that anyway.
Convince me why this game combat is special again?
Play it for a while and it just becomes a button mash, in trying to get away from the mundane buton mash that MMO's are they have only made it worse with the combat rose.
Well alot of it will come down to personal preference, but I haven't got sick of it. I mean if you don't want to button mash you don't have to, but either way I am glad there is no auto attack. Honestly when I played other MMO's i really hated it how you couldn't just attack when you wanted too, it made the world feel so much more restrictive.
If you want that sort of thing you should really go find a more relaxing MMO where you don't have to do much. Besides the good thing here is you can be more active with the melee combat, and if you need a break from that you can go play a caster.
But hey some people won't like it, and it will be too hard for others. I feel sorry for those people because I enjoy it .
Just don't whine when you see everyone put up the shields in the direction of your attack so that you'll lose over and over again. I guess you canceled by then.
You know not the physical plate or wood shield... Maybe you should take time to read the help inside the game. Hint: Press [CTRL] + [1] and then [CTRL] + [2].
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.
"You have the right not to be killed"
Combo attacks! I was really amazed when I heard you can do that like do a normal attack and put up a another uBER good attack but... to my dissapointment it was just a skill that you press and then you press a directional attack and it becomes almost like a normal attack just a little flash added and sum damage.. in my opinion this really sucked ass and it doesn't even feel like its a combo just a normal skill...
and how people talk about shields and stuff.... yeah i'm a lazy ass fat ass I dont wanna run around switch shields in pvp lul... I'll just use them at standard and own the enemy.... because you are not going to run up on a enemy alone in the pvp coming right? so whats the point running arround and switching shielding, you just .... NUKE THE PRIEST KILL KILL KILL with yer mates.....NUKE THE NECROMANCER KILL KILL KILL... Very Easy...

If you are in a sword fight with a warrior who is holding a sword in one hand and a shield in the other, I hope you will not just keep banging his shield with your sword over and over. I hope you will try to vary the direction and angle of your attack and hit him where he is not protected. Otherwise you will never penetrate his shield, you will be predictable in your assault, and you will be dead.
Make sense now?
By the way, most people probably wont know this if they are just starting but later on your combos get into longer strings, so you press a combo then have to press multiple directions to finish off the combo.
People in general tend to play mmos for low intensity fun, like popping bubble wrap, when it becomes too cognitively intensive, and this is relative, it becomes work. Couple that with failure and u get frustration. Yes people want skill involved, but they want its attainment, and perhaps training of it, to be all that's necessary to making it work. If they have to worry about its execution even at high lvls, they lose the sense of achievement.

It kind of hits the nail on the head with ymself and why i chose not to purchase AOC, a MMO for me is a chilled game session of not having to overley complicate things, i like to autoattack a mob while chatting, and if I want a skill based PVP experience i play a FPS.
I cant play a FPS for hrs and hrs a a ime though, and from my beta experiences AOC felt more of a chore than fun.

So your complaining about having to actually -play the game- rather than chatting it up with your guildies like some high school girls over the phone?
Even after playing other mmos, I don't know where your playing these type of games. Furcadia? asian f2p games? Heck wow lotro daoc war gw etc, all require skill input constantly, auto attacking doesnt get the job done. How is this any different? Because now you can't hide behind other successful players and suck ass while they do the work? Now that your gonna be just standing there not attacking, those groups aren't gonna be dragging your scrub rogue along anymore

Typical moronic AOC fanboi and a large reason why i havnt bothered with the game the community is full of asshats like yourself.
I dont auto attack permenantly i play as everyone else plays certainly in group or PVP play however there would be times when i just like to auto attack occasionaly hitting a special whilst chatting to guildie's. Ie when farming a certain creature rescource.
Why not go play a single player game if you dont want any social interaction in a MMO.
Typical moronic fanboi? A person counters your argument and you spout this off? God forbid you're fighting a mob and can't take the time to BS in guild chat for a moment.
How about this? You finish the mob you're killing and THEN talk in guild chat? Auto-attacking is pathetic and does not make a good combat game engine. Why are you trying to dumb my game down so you can sit there and mindless farm mobs while talking in your guild chat?
People want fun, there's time for chatting and a time for fighting. Ever here of Ventrilo? You can do both.
The person above me got it right. Most people use Ventrillo/TS to communicate nowdays. Less and less people are typing. Games like AoC will encourage you to use voice communication even more. I'm waiting for a game with it's own universal Voice Chat system instead of text. Oh there will always be the option to type it out, but I think I'll see fully voice games first on console's where it's a little harder to type.
The point of them, along with the shielding, is to have a system that has move/counter-move dynamic, so that anticipating or leading your opponent gives you an edge.
Also its meant for combos.
Whether it accomplishes these all that well I can't say.
