Any new games resemble EQ1?

VicatinVicatin Member UncommonPosts: 139

I was a long time EQ player. From release up until about the 5th expansion.

I was wondering if there are any new games on the horizon, or already out, that are group-based like everquest was.

I want something that doesnt really involve all the dumb little quests. Epic quests were great, but all these kill 5 get a new bracer quests are just too mind-numbing for me.

Any suggestions?

Vanguard is, somewhat small-group based and group-based for dungeons.

The end-game in Vanguard is awful, though, nothing but raiding.

Vanguard needs a lot more content for the "end-game" and is missing the character customization (AA points) features you might have liked in EQ 1.  The game is still a few years from completion.

    No, there are none.

The games we loved are dead dead dead.

Vanguard is the closest but it really isnt all that close.

And Smedley and Crew at SoE I'm sure will waste no time in butchering it just like they've done to all their other games. :(

They'r not even making a serious effort to fix it, unfortunately.

Be wary about what you read about the game's "progress."  Performance is better, some bugs were fixed (there were so many, and many more to fix), and some content added.

Not serious progress at all after this amount of time.

I want to return to Vanguard, but SOE does not want me to.

To answer your question, personally, I haven't found anything comparable. I've been playing WoW the last few years but the burn is getting to me. LOTR, Vanguard, EQ2, LIneage 2 are just too similar to be anything worth switching to (in my opinion). I haven't tried AoC yet because it looks like more of the same with even more button mashing so will wait and see how it goes in the community.

As far as EverQuest, I logged in to my SOE account and saw they gave me 21 days to play EQ1 so I am. I must tell you, if you can get past the graphics, they have made improvements to the system and, as it always was, the challenge and sense of adventure is still better than the other games I listed above (excluding AoC since I haven't played it). Here's some things of note that I have noticed from playing again.

    - corpse recovery is no longer necessary. you can pay to have your corpse summoned to certain areas.

    - mana regen is not as painful. after you have been out of combat for 30 seconds, the regen goes much faster so downtime between OOM sessions is now 1-3 minutes depending on your buffs but worst case, 3 minutes. This is still not like being able to sit down and drink to full in 10 seconds like WoW so it's still something you have to get used to. But, it actually makes you think a little more about Mana management than in some of the other games, even when fighting trash mobs.

    - I am on Veeshan and the community is no WoW but the chat is not filled with Chuck Norris and Your Mom jokes which is quite refreshing. It's also nice to see people exchanging buffs, etc. just like the old days. There are enough people to say there is a community though. You won't be the only person on the server :) I saw 3 gold seller spam messages which is less than I get in WoW in 6-8 hours of playing.

    - So far, leveling does not appear to be quite as painful. I played a few hours over 2 days and am at level 13 with a new toon. Of course, I know it will grind to a halt eventually but at least getting to higher levels will feel like an accomplishment.

    - The user interface is not as user-friendly and robust as the new games as you probably know. I almost quit before I got everything set up (keybindings, window positions, etc.) but I stuck it out and now it's fine. You just have to get past the frustration of figuring it all out :) I was gone a long time so it took me a while to get my bearing straight again.

That's all I have for now. Hard to say how long I will stick with it once I get to where groups are required. I don't have any personal experience with lvl 20-70 in the current world so we'll see....

Okay not even close to the EQ genre ...

    but have you tried CoH/CoV?

You could like it though the engine shows its age today.

Teaming in CoX is fun and there's always folks to talk to. I prefered Union (EU) over the US servers after 1 year. Folks are/were* kinda more easy. Union is English language with a good portion of Italian and Spanish people (since they don't have a server for their own language).

Always good to go for a 14d trial CoH I'd say.

You dont have any abilities to shorten downtimes ?

In Vanguard, if you are OOM or low on health, outside combat, you can eat food and get your health and mana back in about 20 secs.

I see that adding downtime adds a bit of challenge but isnt it also annoying if you have too much of it ?

    Bolo Yeung ftw!!!

And my vote goes Vanguard, around Kahl and the caves there, it was like the fun of black burrow all over again!
